Any experience of FreeNAS / OpenMediaVault

Hi All, Looking at rebuilding a redundant machine as a home NAS. I'm trying to decide between FreeNAS and OpenMediaVault. Has anyone deployed either or both of these, and if so, what was your experience? Cheers, Ewan

Spreading the word

Hi everybody, I don't post that much from here in lonely Lynn but I just thought I'd let you know about a little Xmas success story that occurred this year. You might remember me mentioning my 83 year old mother who unknowingly uses Ubuntu for her computing needs (and incidentally now wouldn't be without her Android tablet). Well, cash being tight, I decided to take a chance with a present for my 3 year old nice by putting Qimo for kids on a 10 year old laptop and see what happened. Needless to say it was a great success. I received a text from her mum on boxing day, telling me she thought the present was "a stroke of genius" as Ellie hasn't stopped playing with her 'pooter' since and won't be parted from it. So a big thank you to the wonderful Linux community for the fantastic work that you all do for making one little girl's Xmas so special. Happy New Year to you all. Chris

Auto dating?

I guess that I am like many others who use dates to file emails. So I have folders inside Sylpheed and Claws like ALUG->2013-December and so on. But of course we're nearing a year end. Is there any way to automate the creation of directories and filters for email programs? I've looked online and see something similar for Thunderbird but not for Claws and Sylpheed. Does anybody have any ideas about the best way to do this? Or is it best to do it manually?

Cross platform calendar syncing

I've just bought myself a new phone to replace my ageing Nokia N900 and now want to migrate the 6 calendars I have on that to the new phone. But while I'm doing that, I thought I ought to find a way to sync them with a desktop calendar, or some other calendar and that's the purpose of this mail. I was confused by the URL of this - https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Radicale/ to imagine that it ran on a Raspberry Pi but is it a practical proposition to run something like Radicale on a Pi so that I can sync calendars from for example, a Blackberry Playbook, the N900, this 'ere linux box, a Windows machine and my new phone which is a Jolla device? Or should I think of something else, which doesn't necessarily have to run on a Pi?

server load issues

Hullo there, I'm troubleshooting a debian server that is intermittently freezing up and consuming 100% cpu. The problems began about five days ago. At around this time two things changed: exim configuration, and a related server IP (where this server sends on some of its mail). There have also been various package upgrades. The changes to exim were minimal - change of relay address, so are likely to be unrelated, but thought I'd better mention them. Munin shows a grapical report of the load here: http://aleph1.co.uk/munin/aleph1.co.uk/stoneboat.aleph1.co.uk/load.html The strange thing is how it was spiking like mad on the 12/13th then calmed down for a few days until yesterday. I can't seem to isolate any particular process on the server when this happens. Restarting various services can bring it down, but there is no indication that these processes are going particularly mad beforehand. I can't find anything in the server logs reporting anything unusual amiss. There seems to be plenty memory and swap space on the system. I've been running htop and trying to catch what starts the freezing, but it seems different every time - a process will show it is using 100% CPU, then htop itself goes sluggish with lag and when it next shows something there are several processes using 100% CPU in a queue. It can then take up to two minutes to type a command into an ssh terminal. iotop doesn't show anything significant either. Unfortunately these tools are also subject to lag so are probably not showing the current state at time of freeze anyway. I've tried running tools like iostat, but fail miserably to understand the resulting jumble of numbers. If anyone can point me to better diagnostic tools, or give any hint of where to look for the culprit of this behaviour, I'd be most grateful. Cheers, Jenny

Force quit command?

The force quit applet on the panel freezes everything so I've ditched that but Libre Office is still unresponsive having tried to open a .docx file. I've tried killall -9 in Terminal but it doesn't recognise that. What's the command now? TIA. Bev (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.)
