I guess we'll just have to get the North American version then!! ALUG5? Laurie was talking about coinsiding it with another bash. Not sure what the plan is though? Domain names OT
by John Woodard 14 Dec '99

I know this is off topic but a good friend has asked me to register a .co.uk domain name for him. Where is the best place to do this? Didn't one of you work for an ISP in Norwich somewhere? Any advice appreciated etc. He also wants a file and print server to replace an old Mac box that has died. Samba? I think so. RC scripts
by jg＠cyberstorm.demon.co.uk 13 Dec '99

Hi all, Since I'm coding LNC every day it makes sense to get apache going on boot. However, trying to get this going through RH6.0's rc scripts is proving less than entertaining :-( In /etc/rc.d/rc.local I have put the following in: if [-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache ]; then /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache start fi /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache appears to be the same as other init scripts but obviously catering for apache. The variable pointing at the executable is fine, but then I don't think this is the problem since I don't receive any messages whlie booting. In fact if I didn't know better, I would think that the code above isn't being executed whatsoever. Before you ask, ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 504 Oct 8 23:46 apache Can anyone make sense of this? PCAnswers CD solution?
by MJ Ray 13 Dec '99

13 Dec '99

I don't think I've seen this news posted yet: "Anyway - all the CDs are being replaced free of charge to the readers, with a few extra goodies on there to make up for the hassle. I was up in Bath sorting this wee mess out yesterday, and the new CDs are going to be ready to go by the end of next week." Is that a good solution? Folks, Does anyone know of a good FAQ for putting a SCSI CDRW into an otherwise IDE Linux box? Any recommendations for software, and other techniques? This is all new territory for me (SuSE 6.2, BTW). Cheers, Laurie. It would appear that we all got the date wrong, someone's well ahead of us: http://www.progressive-comp.com/Lists/?l=php3-general&r=1&w=2&b=200001 Quite impressive that. No doubt a taster for what's to come... James. Debian updates
by Adam Bower 07 Dec '99

07 Dec '99

Morning all, I have just installed Debian 2.1 on my two machines at home after using Suse for a while and have now discovered the X servers are a little old and don't support my gfx card. I was wondering does anyone have some suitable updates on CD? I was wondering if it would be a good idea to go up to Potato? I know that Potato is considered unstable but no way can it crash as often my 98 box has taken to recently:) Adam [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

Definite Linux
by John Woodard 07 Dec '99

07 Dec '99

I see that the latest Definite Linux is now available to download from: ftp://212.1.130.10/pub/Definite/7.0/ Details at: http://www.definitelinux.com/ Far too big a download for my modem connection. I'd really like to try this as it's a UK specific distro based on Red Hat (which I use). Any of you Uni chaps like to do me a favour and grab me an ISO on your fast connection before the next meeting? Talking of the next meeting has a date been decided yet?
