* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk * List: alug-announce(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hi, A room has been booked in Union House at UEA for ALUG2 a week on Sunday, from 1400 until 1900. If you can now tell me what we're going to do, I'll publicise it on the newsgroups. We may be able to set up a IP-masq network connection for the meeting, too. -- MJR Stats Postgrad mailto:h089@mth.uea.ac.uk http://stats.mth.uea.ac.uk/ UEA Norwich UK mailto:markj@stu.uea.ac.uk http://www.stu.uea.ac.uk/ require("witty_comment"); [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECT of "unsubscribe" to this list and "subscribe" to ] [ alug-announce(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

distributed.net

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk So, you know all that spare processor time you've got? Feel like donating it to a (very) worthy cause? I've set up a team for ALUG on distributed.net. If you've not come across them before, distributed.net is a distributed computer on a quite insane scale. They currently have somewhere in the region of 175,000 members working together on somewhere in the region on 220,000 computers ranging from 386s up to supercomputers. As the distributed.net tagline says: The largest computer on earth. It's all pretty impressive stuff - distributed.net is currently working on breaking an RC5 code (basically to prove that it's possible to do it in a sensible amount of time) If you'd care to join distributed.net and the ALUG team, then we'll see just how much useful work our computers can get done while we're not using them. Take a look at http://www.distributed.net/ for more details. See you next sunday! Hi, I'm back ;) We can certainly hold a meeting in one of the meetings rooms in Union House, or possibly the Hive bar if it's not in use, but I need a suggestion of a time before I can see what we've got. Next weekend or the one after? Also, UH isn't blessed with very good net connections in/near the possible meeting rooms, so we'll be confined to localnet, I suspect. Shame. -- MJR Stats Postgrad mailto:h089@mth.uea.ac.uk http://stats.mth.uea.ac.uk/ UEA Norwich UK mailto:markj@stu.uea.ac.uk http://www.stu.uea.ac.uk/ What's On? http://www.stu.uea.ac.uk/cgi-bin/entsdb?Q [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECT of "unsubscribe" to this list and "subscribe" to ] [ alug-announce(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

Hi I'm Here!
by Daniel Smith 03 Jun '99

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hello All I was unable to make the first meeting :o( due to other commitments and I have only just read my messages since the start of May, looks like I missed a great day! I have two questions for you all and then I will go back to lurking for the time being:- 1) When is the next meeting? Soon hopefully! Any locations in mind? I'm happy to travel anywhere and can give lifts, I'm in Braintree in Essex but don't mind going a bit out of my way to pick people up if required. 2) This is the big one! I've been asked to set up a mail server at work, my boss isn't as IT literate as she likes to think and can't understand why I don't just walk into PC World buy some software and have it up and running in ten minutes flat. I have decided to "stick it" on a Linux box. Now I need help as I've only installed Linux once (Red-hat from PC-Plus) and due to lack of time didn't get to play with it properly. The Network server is Novell Netware 3.2 (at least it not Gates!) and the clients are all Win 95 or 98. I need a mail server that will periodically dial up the ISP (Pipex) and then download and distribute the mail to all of the clients. Any mail that is sent from the desktop will go to the Linux box and wait until it dials up. I suppose the desktop mail client will be Micro$haft Outlook as that's the main software that all of the duffers I work with can understand. Can anybody Help? Please. Reply's to the group or direct to myself are welcomed and appreciated! I am not sure what you are asking, but hopefully this will satisfy ya The card is a 3dfx Voodoo3 2000 PCI version, The X server has been written for the banshee (the banshee and the voodoo3 are effectively the same, just the V3 is faster) and it works fine, the 3D Glide librarys have also been written, and are in alpha.. I have not personally experienced any bugs, but the drivers need "tweaking" after installation in order to get them to work, this will all be sorted out in time. the Quake3 test client (as far as I know) only runs under linux atm.. and I have tried it with a P166MMX, with 64Meg EDO ram, the V3, and a slow hard disk, and it is very impressive ;)... and Quake2 is unbelieveable fast at 1240x1048 !!! does that answer your question ??
