*big* gentoo problem

Hi all, was using gentoo last night and did a emerge clean which should not remove any packages critical for operation of the machine and had it remove portage..... This has resulted in one very poorly box, does anyone have any idea how i could fix this? Is rpm included by default on the system? I can't check anything now as I am at work but I just wanted to read the docs to make sure I hadn't done anything stupid and now feel vindicated that I was not at fault. Anyhow if rpm is included in the base system would somebody mind building me an rpm of portage-2.0.38 please? If it isn't has anybody else got any good ideas? Thanks Adam

(Quick apt-get install lsof) lsof |grep ducati also hangs. Rebooting the box - *cough* *ahem* well the truth is, gawd knows what I've changed in that time....... I'm off till Monday now, perhaps I'll come in and it will have magically mended itself. Thanks! Jenny.

Would people consider these guidelines worth adopting for the ALUG lists? If so, we'll add them to the web site. If you can't be polite, please consider unsubscribing. #2. Please don't post any off-topic mail (non-GNU/Linux) to this list. #3. In your reply, quote only minimum relevant portions of the earlier mail. #4. Once a 'thread' is declared closed by the moderators, please don't insist on discussing it. #5. Merchandise

OK, this is a bit off topic but does any one know where you can get decent Linux merchandise at a reasonable price, I am after a cuddly Tux amount other things, I don't seem to be able to find anything at a reasonable price. Although it wasn't the first attempt with the new settings. I've coming to the conclusion that it's my media that's crap. After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track! I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood. An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK. My view on this topic is that a new subscriber should be pointed towards the FAQ, a link to a guide on netiquette, and perhaps one of those Newbie guides (i.e. don't expect an answer if you give no info). In regards to off-topicness, people seem to self-regulate and move things to social when things go too far off topic. Sometimes, someone sends a mail nudging them in that direction (let's take this to social guy/gals). I have only been on the list for a year or so, and self-regulation in general seems to have worked fine. And for headers, the FAQ sums it up. For newbies especially, their LUG is essential for them to start using Linux (how many times has a newbie said "I can't get my modem working????"), so perhaps their only recourse is to use work e-mail. Or perhaps they can't afford a landline/net connection. ALUG is the friendliest LUG I have seen so far since it (as a sort of egregoric entity) doesn't alienate people. Let's keep it that way! SGI Indigo

Hi all, I have the opportunity to acquire an SGI Indigo (not an Indigo II) today for free with unknown specs (possibly an R4000 cpu) a quick search on google reveals that it will not run either Linux or NetBSD but will run Irix 6.5, can anybody think of any other uses for it? all reasonable suggestions welcome but will need them quick as it will most likely be dumped at some point tonight if I don't take it....
