You can find some more background information at http://www.linux.org.uk/ http://swpat.ffii.org/players/uk/ The specific questions that the UKPO asks are at http://www.patent.gov.uk/patent/notices/misc/softpat.htm However, in addition to these questions you may also wish to comment on whether you agree to the UKPO's interpretation of the first consultation round, whether you think the admission of patents on "software with a technical effect" will be useful etc. Another hint: Only the last 3 pages of the 22-page Commission document at http://europa.eu.int/comm/internal_market/en/indprop/comp/com02-92en.pdf are the actual proposal, for a more detailed critique see http://swpat.ffii.org/papers/eubsa-swpat0202/ You may want to state whether you allow, encourage or forbid the UKPO from publishing your statement on their website. Hi ALUG, Thank you for welcoming me. My short description on why I have chosen LINUX is:- Microsoft's Monopoly Linux being virtually 100% crash proof Designed to be a server at no outrageous cost If you don't like the way a program runs you can add your "two pennith" to it It has followers like your good selves who help Linux virgins like me and helps Linux to overtake Microsoft I am sure there are many other good reasons on why Linux is the way forward and I look forward in finding them. alt key not working/euro?

OK, hopefully one last thing in my X saga. (now where are those tt fonts I had from my M$ days?...). My alt key isn't working. I'm sure there's a real simple way to add it in XF86Config-4 - anyone know? And has anyone figured out how to do a euro sign? I can't seem to find any fonts that support it. Thanks! OK. So I'm building my debian system, how to say... *minimally* :). I have X up and running, but I need to get sound working. I have a Soundblaster Live Platinum card, (EMU10K). I'll be compiling in support for that with my my new kernel. However, I'm a little confuzed as to which set of sound drivers to use. I have a MIDI keyboard, and would like to take advantage of this. I also use XMMS, Ogle, and all the normal desktop stuff. Anyone have any ideas could elucidate for me? (Mr.Casal?) X server: connection refused

If I su to root in a terminal, and try to edit a file using emacs, I get the following error: Xlib: connection to "X0.0" refused by server Xlib: client is not authorized to connect to server emacs: cannot connect to Xserver :0. Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use '-d' It's OK is I log in as root, or as a user, it only has the problem when I su. (This error occurs with any program that uses X). initrd, lilo and general weirdness

1st off: Adam:- for some bizarre reason, my box booted into 2.4.18 this morning, even though 3 reboots still took it to 2.2.19 last night. I simply have no idea why. One question: why do people seem to dislike initrd.img's? I'm gonna have to compile a kernel anyway cos I got all sorts of unresolved symbols, and some of the modules I'd prefer to have compiled in anyway. For some reason, lilo won't let me boot to my second disk. I have a second HD, with a copy of lilo on it (from previous installation). I would like the lilo on hda1 to boot onto hdb1, but for some reason it won't let me do this this morning (it just ignores me-no errors!) my lilo.conf line for it is: other=/dev/hdb1 label=Redhat alias=2 -General Weirdness Section- Last night, running on my old kernel, I copied the kernel source from a CD to my HD. While it did this my Xserver hung up until it had finished. The same happened when I un-bzipped it. grrr. Adam suggested it might be a h/w problem, so I booted into RH (which can't do *now*, grrr), and quite happily copied 4gigs from one directory to another, whilst mucking about with xmms, no lock up. software for install day

Hi people, Something just struck me, do you guys have all the software you want for install day? I don't know if i am going to make it and I am sure you will have lots of lovely bandwidth at UEA etc. but are there any special requests? If so i can get downloading now and stick things on CD and post them to someone who will be there...
