Many thanks to all for replies to new kernel question: just back at my desk after ten blissful days away. All seems to have gone well, with lilo happy to give me a choice of kernels to boot into....2.4.18 seems ok so far. Let's see if it cures the "do_try_to_free_pages_update" problem! Cheers, all! Jenny.

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.openprojects.net in the #alug channel, you can take a look at www.openprojects.net to get more info on the openprojects network. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server uk.openprojects.net" or "/server eu.openprojects.net" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. new kernel install
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 08 Apr '02

Happy spring, all! I've celebrated by doing my first kernel upgrade. Now, I have gone through all the make stuff, and ended up at make bzimage, with the intention of sticking the image on a floppy for testing. However I've come up with the message "warning: kernel is too large for standalone boot from floppy". How advisable is it to just go ahead and "make install" at this stage? I have copied vmlinz-2.2.18 and config-2.2.18 to vmlinuxOLD and configOLD. Also, is "make bzlilo" like "make install" but also tells lilo about the new kernel image? Thanks! Jen.

ADMIN: Mailman Upgrade on Tuesday 9th April
by Martyn Drake 07 Apr '02

07 Apr '02

Hi folks, Just a bit of advanced warning that I'll be upgrading the ALUG list manager, Mailman, to version 2.0.9 on Tuesday 9th April at 1pm. There will be a small amount of downtime whilst the archives and the list configs are backup up and the new version installed. Thanks, Martyn -- Martyn Drake | Email : martyn-d(a)moving-picture.com Systems Administrator | Web : http://www.moving-picture.com The Moving Picture Company | Phone : +44 (0)20 7434 3100/ext. 7853

Would the next iptables expert step forward please.

I meant to post this to the list (which I have now done) but I think that I sent to Mark's address by mistake. I deleted the kernel source code directory and re-unpacked the source code. Reloaded my saved configuration and re-compiled. Now I'm even more mystified. I get an even longer list which includes some network drivers( 3c59x) which appeared to be ok before: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/8390.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/dummy.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_async.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_generic.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/fs/smbfs/smbfs.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_MASQUERADE.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_nat.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/ipv6.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/netfilter/ip6_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/netfilter/ip6table_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/netlink/netlink_dev.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.o I can't help feeling that I'm doing (not doing) something very obvious. I have compiled kernels many times in the past and have never had any trouble that wasn't of my own making.

Actually, a CD with one of the live Linux demo systems on, a copy of something like zipslack for the Windows/DOS users and copies of network install images for Debian and any others is probably a very good idea for the Install Day. I expect other LUGs participating would like to use such a thing. I'm more than happy to do the artwork and documentation, so who can compile the CD image? Shall we talk about this on IRC on Monday? I expect I can arrange distribution too if required, but hopefully it won't be a full 650Mb (reduce download and burn times... let's not fill the disc with crap just to make up the numbers, but having (for example) key starter docs from the LDP on there is probably a good idea). -- MJR

> Is Zipslack any good for a starter? It may be that we can do one bootable CD with three or more distributions on. Evil, huh? ;-) I tried Zipslack and Phatlinux before any other- the only real bonus is that you don't have to get confused with partitions etc. I didn't really find them more accessable than a normal distro that sets X up for you (or helps you along!). You need to have the documentation handy too-it's probably harder for us to print that out than it is to do CD's. I think one thing that puts newbies off is: I've got this command line- now what? Anyone got one of those SUSE live evaluation CD's? I've never used one, but the concept of playing around in a Linux distro purely off a CD (without having to play with your HD) makes trying it out a lot easier. > From the clean source code tree I did: > > make dep > make bzImage > make modules > make modules_install OK, Ricardo stating the obvious again. I know you said the source code tree is clean, but did you try to make clean or (possibly a better idea) make mrproper at any point? Worth a go, I guess, just incase you had stuff hanging about from previous comps. > bang head against wall > bang head against wall again I know that feeling too well! The only other thing I'm thinking of is maybe your compiler is fscked? Are you using gcc 2.95, or a later one? Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

If you're interested then let me know. -SNIP- > Perhaps this may be of some interest for the `Install fest Day' provided > someone can install them, Pity they're on DVD, as the box I have reserved for *BSD and Debian only has an old CD-Rom drive :( I see no reason why someone shouldn't install a *BSD at the install fests, but the focus should really be *GNU*/Linux. As a related point, I suspect if people turn up, some may not bring their computers (they *are* a pain to lug around), so maybe we could have some install discs on offer? Plenty of us could put the first CD of (insert distro's name here) on a CD-R, and there's plenty of Debians CD's bandying about. Perhaps we could do a 3 disc pack for a small fee- like 1 Debian, 1 Redhat, 1 Slackware, just so that we present an offer of several distros so people can try them out. (I'm all for choice rather than forcing 1 distro on a newbie) I know Martyn had some on offer for cheap a while back (in rather spiffy cases, might I add). With regard to the above which was refered to in thursday's main digest, the following was posted in the Freebsd-users digest, of todays date: > Message: 1 > Subject: FreeBSD 4.4 DVDs available to a good home > From: Paul Richards <paul(a)freebsd-services.com> > To: freebsd-users(a)uk.freebsd.org > Date: 05 Apr 2002 11:54:23 +0200 > We've got several hundred copies of 4.4 left that we'd like to give away > to help promote FreeBSD. > Some ideas we've had are to give them out at computer societies in > colleges or other user groups but we're open to any other sensible > suggestions. > We'd prefer to only send out fairly large quantities, of say 100, but > we'd consider lots of 25 as well. If you're interested then let me know. > Paul. Perhaps this may be of some interest for the `Install fest Day' provided someone can install them, I've found it most perplexing as a) I never bothered to learn how to partition, and, b) one is offered such a huge choice that decision making becomes a bewildering maze.
