Boot problems

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.

JDK 1.2

Hi there, I've just installed some processing software under debian which requires a "JDK 1.2" to run. It seems to just need a java executable to run no graphics or anything. So, can anyone suggest a debian package for woody that would provide me with an equivalent to the JDK 1.2? I have seen the various jdk1.1 and kcaffe packages on the woody CDs and on www.debian.org, but I can't seen anything that would provide anything suitable. Hope someone can help. Cheers. David.

OK, now this is possibly one of the strangest requests that you'll ever get... I want virii, basically so that I can test/play with this funky java ScannerDaemon thing that I want to plug in to our server (free virus scanner, yay!). So, all those "really fun" M$ viruses that we all get from time to time, please bounce a copy this way! (works mail server appears to be filtering the main culprits, damn!) so, brettp(a)users.sourceforge.net is the way to go (I use imap on it from work, given that it redirects to liunuxfreemail.com). As I'm trying to rewrite my firewall script (last one on this system was autogenerated). I'm trying to find a suitable one to crib from. I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl. OK...the guy in despatch clicks a button in my ms access database (stop spitting) , which sends the out put in html format to the web directory. There is a link to this file from my intranet website so that anyone (and in particular my boss, who likes to keep a nice tight hold on credit matters) can scrutinise it with an eagle eye. If stuff is being omitted, I'll get my knuckles rapped. So it is just one page, I need to take the multiple pages access has generated and turn them back into one. This must be done before anyone accesses the page, but after the report has been run (daily). It seemed to me that when the page was accessed was a good trigger. If I can use the apache log file to trigger a script that does the appending, i would be delighted....but i now have half an hour left to mend this ugly oversight on my part ( I blame access) and don't know if I can understand this awk thing in that time. Mind you...or php...... (/me finds table and crawls under it with brown paper bag over head...) Now, how about if I try and use a file date changing as a trigger to run a file? So if the date on my html file changes (as the despatch guy sends a new one) it runs a script doing the appending...is *that* more simple? :-) Thanks all! Jen.
