Mounting Devices as user in Slackware 8

Yesterday I wrote this into my /etc/fsatb file: /dev/cdrom /home/john/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0 It worked nicely, emboldened by this success, and with my over confidence fueled by prescription pain-killers, I extrapolated this from the above: /dev/fd0 /home/john/fd0 ext2 noauto,user,ro 1 1 (this latter 1 1 as access was denied otherwise), this succeeded in damaging the filesystem beyond what I could do to repair it. Is there an /etc/fstab entry which will enable me to access both the cd and the floppy as a user? Is this a question I need to ask on a specialist Slackware list? Simon: > rsh -l<login-name> <router-ip> sh ver "rsh -l login ip" on its own should get you a login shell. rcp is the usual way to copy files across, but "cat srcfile | rsh -l login ip 'sh cat >destfile'" should work if you have to. Hope that helps. -- MJR

Many thanks to Ricardo and Ian for suggesting to set "Compare pages = NEVER". This seems to improve the situation but not cure it in all cases. It still seems as though it doesn't know where to look when it finds the modem not connected. A rare case of one up to the DOS browser, I suppose! Gerald.

Burning CDs

Having now managed to install my CD-RW drive and load up cdrecord 1.10 in Slackware, I've started to fiddle with actually making CDs. I downloaded Xcdroast and managed to get it to run, but I can't find any buttons at all that erase a previously recorded CD-RW disk and it seems that Xcdroast won't just simply write the new files to a previously recorded CD-RW disk. Am I missing something obvious? Is Xcdroast the best front-end for the CD-writing process? I picked it because I could get a .TGZ file already to install in Slackware. (Alright - call me chicken!) As always, all advice very gratefully received! Gerald.

Yes, there's iptables for 2.4.x (sure you can't upgrade from .10 yet?) and there should be guides to using it in pretty much the same places that tell you how to use ipchains for 2.2.x, I think. -- MJR

If you add "rtl8139" to the end of the "/etc/modules" file it should load the module everytime the machine boots. Then rest of the boot scripts will startup ifconfig and route before samba does. (Assuming you have all the correct entries in /etc/network/interfaces file for eth0). D.

box crash question

Hi all, When I came in yesterday morning my box had done some form of crash. Couldn't telnet in, keyboard wouldn't respond, nothing. After nasty reboot and messy things I checked all the log files but could find nothing unusual, last /var/log/messages showed a check at 8.15 am then nothing. The box has a ups connected to give it back-up power so can't have been due to a power blip. Two questions: 1. why would this happen? (answer 42 or fish?) 2. I have to re-enter all the network card stuff manually insmod rtl8139 route add network stuff restart samba daemons etc etc each time the box restarts...a).why doesn't the rtl8139 module get discovered automatically (it is in etc/modutils) and b)can I add all this stuff to a startup script in debian? Choose NEVER, I think the default is "Automatically". Why it doesn't just display the old page, I don't know. (So this might not be the answer, or maybe a bug) I've noticed that the cache seems to make less of a difference than in IE 5 on a M$ machine, at least in it's default configuration.
