box crash question
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 14 Dec '01

Hi all, When I came in yesterday morning my box had done some form of crash. Couldn't telnet in, keyboard wouldn't respond, nothing. After nasty reboot and messy things I checked all the log files but could find nothing unusual, last /var/log/messages showed a check at 8.15 am then nothing. The box has a ups connected to give it back-up power so can't have been due to a power blip. Two questions: 1. why would this happen? (answer 42 or fish?) 2. I have to re-enter all the network card stuff manually insmod rtl8139 route add network stuff restart samba daemons etc etc each time the box restarts...a).why doesn't the rtl8139 module get discovered automatically (it is in etc/modutils) and b)can I add all this stuff to a startup script in debian? (Three questions cleverly disguised as two) Thanks, Jenny.

I just get the error box with the unreachable host message. Try Edit>Preferences>Cache. Under "Compare the page in the cache to the page in the network"- what does it say? Choose NEVER, I think the default is "Automatically". Why it doesn't just display the old page, I don't know. (So this might not be the answer, or maybe a bug) I've noticed that the cache seems to make less of a difference than in IE 5 on a M$ machine, at least in it's default configuration. Helppp.. Hi Guys, I'm trying to update a router config from a file remotely using rsh.. I know I get a connection as rsh -l<login-name> <router-ip> sh ver works.. But I want to update a few lines for the config, can someone give me a few pointers on how to either redirect or parse or whatever I need to do to get the data out of the file and into the router using rsh (preferably). Ian Douglas: > <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address [...] > Firstly, does anyone know what is causing this repeated error message and > what I can do to cure it. That's a kernel fart, I think. My normal solution is to rebuild a kernel that's better suited to my hardware, and/or upgrade the kernel to a less buggy one. > Secondly, if I come across an error message like this in the future could > anyone recommend any info anywhere which would help me understand what it > means so I can learn how to interpret it myself rather than bother you guys > again? Your best bet is to search mailing lists and/or newsgroups on google and see what people like the kernel developers have said about the error. You'll probably have more luck searching on the interesting parts of the message like "Bad EIP" than "Null pointer..." which is quite a common error. Hope that helps. -- MJR

Laptop error message
by Ian Douglas 14 Dec '01

Hi folks, I am a newbie user and have recently installed Linux on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 560E). (Is this the first sign of Linux addiction??). The installation appears to have gone smoothly, however, I recently issued a "dmesg" command to look up some boot details and found it contained the following error message repeated several times: Code: Bad EIP value. <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 000002bb printing eip: 00000008 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 CPU: 0 EIP: 0050:[<00000008>] EFLAGS: 00010216 eax: 0000530a ebx: 00000001 ecx: 00000000 edx: 00000000 esi: 000000ff edi: 00000292 ebp: 00000000 esp: c3bebec4 ds: 0058 es: 0000 ss: 0018 Process apm (pid: 3059, stackpage=c3beb000) Stack: 00480026 c3bebf28 00000000 c0110813 00000010 c3bebf28 00000292 00000018 00000018 c3bebf66 000000ff ffffffff ffffffff c0110000 40100000 c0110a7f 0000530a 00000001 00000000 c3bebf28 c3bebf2c c3bebf30 c3bebf34 c3bebf38 Call Trace: [<c0110813>] [<c0110000>] [<c0110a7f>] [<c01117b6>] [<c014e838>] [<c01324d6>] [<c0106e63>] Firstly, does anyone know what is causing this repeated error message and what I can do to cure it. Secondly, if I come across an error message like this in the future could anyone recommend any info anywhere which would help me understand what it means so I can learn how to interpret it myself rather than bother you guys again? Netscape 4.77 cache question
by Edenyard 13 Dec '01

13 Dec '01

Am I the only one for whom the Netscape V4.77 (Linux) cache doesn't seem to work? I have disk cache set to 20Mb, RAM cache set to whatever it came with, and the correct subdirectory in the home directory but it doesn't work as expected. I assume that, when I visit a site, the page that I look at is stored in the cache. When I click on the entry in the hotlist sometime later after having hung up the modem line, I should get the page back because it's been found in the cache. But it doesn't. I just get the error box with the unreachable host message. Maybe I've completely mis-understood how it's meant to work. But this is the way my little old DOS graphical browser works. Thanks for any ideas! Gerald.

This looks worth a look: http://www.elxlinux.com See this write-up first: http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2800785910.html One plus seems to be that they appear to have used KDE, but included the Gnome libraries so GNUCash and Galeon work. John: > yes, see: http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net Talk about hiding its light under a vat of very thick concrete! I can't find a feature list for this (including, most importantly, does it do versioning?) and the docs dir in CVS is empty. Or am I just looking in the wrong place? -- MJR
