This is weird...

OK. This is weird. In the new Linux Format, there is a letter by "Steve Bates" about Enlightenment, and how it crashes with "missing line in config". If anyone has kept an archive of messages from the main list, look at my post with the subject "Crash". VERY VERY similar. In fact the printed one seems to be the same except for it's been trimmed down... Did someone forward the message to Linux Format? Samba problem

Hi, I'm running Mandrake 7.2 on the spare box on my LAN and I decided it was time to stop using FTP to transfer files to it and to start using Samba to share files with the two windows boxes. After much messing about with smb.conf,smbd and nmbd, I managed to get the Linux box to show up in the Windows Network Neighbourhood. Unfortunately, whenever I try to access the shares on the Linux box it asks me for a password. I cannot find any password in the smb.conf and whatever passwords I submit using smbpasswd don't work either. Does anyone know why this is happening? (Sorry if I'm being a bit vague anywhere) TIA, Mat

The messages I received from you last nightwere ok, (no =20), but your postto the =20, I'll see if mine, doif this is posted I have only noticed thisproblem when posting to the list, (unless those I've replied to individually know otherwise), I can only conclude that it is caused by part of the route between ourselves and the List, I live in Halesworth, East Suffolk, and am connected via the 01986 (Bungay Exchange), which Bt Anytime claim is unmodenised and therefore unable to cope with my internet connectionat all. Kmail, line endings and char sets

Hi all Still battling with the basics. Do my posts appear with =20 line ends (can't remember if these represent CR or LF)? Apparently they do for some list readers. I am using Kmail 1.2 (KDE 2.1.1, mandrake 8.0). A general question: what is the recommended char set to use? And a KDE question - char sets seem to be set both under Settings>Configuration>Composer>Default Charset (main window) and under Options>Set Encoding in the composer window. How do these settings inter-relate? Finally, I have just noticed that word-wrap was set to 78. I have reset this to 68 and would appreciate any comments about whether this has improved things in any way. cheers Syd

Has anyone got Xine working on their system yet? It's being a bit of a pig. I have installed pretty much all the plugins (incl. the decss one and another for 'encrypted' DVDs)except one, which was not meant to be essential - dx3r I think it was called. I have ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd mount /mnt/cdrom /mnt/dvd Xine recognises that there is a DVD drive there, it recognises the .VBO files, but I get no output. One thing I think may be a problem is that I haven't set MTRR. (ref. Linux DVD howto). This requires my starting X and outputting to file so I can read a few configs of my videocard- e.g. it's base memory address. Unfortunately I can't do this from within Gnome or KDE. My system boots straight into an X environment (KDE). How can I stop X and go to the command line and startx 2> xoutput (xoutput being a fairly good name for the output of x ;) ) Is it just stopx ? Anyone had any success? Anything else you can think for me to consider? I have a Geforce 2 MX card, with the appropriate drivers and kernel from nvidia. The SCSI device doesn't really exist of course, but looks as though it does, so that you can read these 'files' (camera images) via it. As I said - my understanding isn't perfect, or even adequate.... Gerald.

Linux and USB?

Please could anyone shed some light on this for me. I borrowed a digital camera and wanted to download its shots into my Linux box (Redhat 7.1 2.4.2 kernel P166 64Mb RAM). I hunted around and managed to find a place on the linux-usb.org site where several people had managed this feat with the same camera that I'm using (and using all sorts of kernel versions such as 2.0.x, 2.2.x, 2.4.x), which is a Fuji finepix 1400 Zoom with 8Mb memory card. However, I simply cannot get it to work for me. I modprobe the usb-storage, usb-core and usb-uhci modules, as per instructions and they all appear to load, according to lsmod. SCSI support is already loaded. When I then plug the camera in and switch it on, there's disk activity and files appear in /proc/scsi. So then I do the "mount /dev/sda /mnt/camera" bit and I always get a message that /dev/sda isn't a block device or sda doesn't exist. I've tried variations, like "mount -t msdos ..." or "mount -t vfat ..." but it makes no difference. It seems that the USB link works but it all falls over when it comes time to access the mythical SCSI emulation or whatever it is to read the image files. Has anyone ever succeeded in this? I'd appreciate any guidance that's going - thanks! Gerald.
