Test Alug Site
by Martyn Drake 30 Jan '01

Hi folks, I'm shortly about to try a test web site out at http://test.alug.org.uk using the thatware.org system. For those that haven't seen thatware, it's simply a Slashdot (or PHP-Nuke) like system for posting news articles. With a series of admins, we will be able to publish announcements and venue information easily. The test site should be ready by the end of the evening. Regards, Martyn

Sony Vaio PCMCIA cd-rom drive

Hi People, Does anyone have one of the above? as I have had my vaio with transmeta processor for a few months now and havn't got around to installing linux (no netboot, no cd-rom drive, no floppy drive, and loadlin doesn't work grrr..). I have tried loadlin and the kernel does not come up!? and using a USB floppy is ok but I havn't now got the floppy drive as it was borrowed and I would need to make new boot disks with USB floppy support (which is a pain). also I have been ill for the past week so may not make it on Sunday, and almost certainly won't have new Debian cd's. Cheers, Yes I'll have a look on Sunday please. WBH has sent me a copy of his boilerplate - which should keep me busy for a few weeks ;-) I intend to bring a jaz drive with me on Sunday (haven't got a cdw yet so I'm hoping to borrow the company Jaz instead (should give me a chance to play SCSI anyways) - together with the necessary stuff for SourceNavigator, Insight and gdb5.0 if anyone wants to grab a copy. I also intend to have a network card in my machine by then but if not does anyone know how to link up using another method (parallel, serial, modem)? Bad practice to reply to your own posts but also have a look at [http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~beej/guide/net] - good guide to network programming http://www.cis.udel.edu/~totten/vi/ for using VI. I also have a useful link if I can find the bookmark, mail me direct if you want it. I Can only recommend the book Programming with GNU Software Mike Loukides and Andy Oram O'reilly ISBN: 1-56592-112-7 (I can bring it on sunday if you want to have a look before you buy) It covers everything from Editing and Compiling to Makefiles and the CVS system. Also for makeing Makefiles, I found it useful to use someone elses as an initial template (drop me a line if you want me to make a simple one for you) HTH Thanks D --- Earl Brannigan <earl.brannigan(a)lindenhouse.co.uk> wrote: > Hi again. > I come from a M$ windoze programming background (although I did do a > bit of > Oracle on Unix for a while) but I'm dying to get into programming on > Linux > in C/C++. > I have everything I need compiler wise, All the C Libraries etc > but... > Unfortunately Windoze programming gets you into some bad (lazy) > habits with > nice IDEs, taking care of your include directories, compiler > switches > etc). > Thus moving to a command line compiler is a bit of a headache, > generating > makefiles is something I know nothing about - despite reading the > man/info > pages on make/automake/autoconf etc I'm still completely in the dark. > Does anyone have any good info on this, I don't even mind beginners > stuff, > just something to get me moving (I've made a start on the How-Tos). > Or better still (begin lazy Win user hopeful smile) is there an IDE > out > there for X which sits on top of GCC and takes care of at least some > of the > nitty gritty? > Or a little wizard to help create makefiles from a source tree or > something. > Anything. > I've looked at the section on Front-ends at www.gnu.org but couldn't > see > anything, I haven't got much time (at work you see) and would rather > not > re-trawl the same ground someone else has already covered. > Or if you have any pointers, advice - eg. good practice when setting > up > source trees in Linux etc, how easy is this 'macro language' which > you use > to create the files which become makefiles? > I Hope this isn't too noddy a posting. > Cheers > Earl > BTW will be at Syleham on Sunday (wife has granted leave) so see yer > there. > > "Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to > be > broken." __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! I'm by no means an expert on this, but here are a couple of pointers from things I've heard of. I hope others can offer more.
