3com ethernet cards
by Ashley T. Howes 10 Dec '00

Final question for today :) I am planning to purchase a 3com ethernet card for my Linux box (Athlon 650 - PCI card required). I know some of you have bought 3com cards in the past and was wondering what the best option was for Linux support. I have tended to use NE2000 compatible cards in the past, but recently heard that they put more load on the CPU than they are supposed to. So I thought a change to 3com would be best. Any pros or cons I should be aware of in using 3com ethernet cards with Linux? Thanks again for your help. Ashley Dr. Ashley T. Read the hardware HOWTO and www.alsa-project.org to find out if your sound card is well-supported. Depending on whether you're using the standard kernel drivers or ALSA, the setup will vary a bit. Unless something changed, the ALSA package in debian is a little out of date. Debian's own installation howto isn't bad, but remember there are lots of people around UEA to lend a hand if you hit problems. Back everything up first, though. -- MJR

music department - linux - etc.

Hey/ An e-mail exchange with andrew savory where I asked questions on linux/sound/cocoon+xml(xslt), went something like: (me)<< > -where do you think I should start as far as distributions? slackware seems > too hardcore, mandrake seems to give you 5000 apps I don't need...I'm > looking for a fast, stable, server system for sound and network tasks, > pretty much only...though X11 will be needed, since my unix skills aren't > that good at all. (a.savory)>> I'd go for Debian. It's a bit of a beast to install, but worth sticking with as maintenance is a dream. and... (me)<< > I really could use some advice on this, + any references to books, dists on > CD you may have lying around, etc. Hope I'm not being to cheeky there, but > Jonathan Impett (new guy at MUS) is plotting little nets of penguins talking > sound at each other, and it would be great to build a couple as test > boxes... (a.savory)>> Sounds cool - best bet is to email the alug list and ask someone to burn a CD for you. Brett is usually pretty happy to help in that respect. so anyway, I've read this list for a while (never active, anonymous coward like), earlier attempts with redhat 5.x etc thwarted by lack of unix know-how, though managed sound and a couple o' apps...back again to try (hopefully for good) and build a stable sound/networking box, then a first version of PC-104 or hacked laptop based wearable with a smaller, (maybe Work_std?) debian installation to run scaled down sound + net applications, which will form part of ARiADA (advanced research in aesthetics in the digital arts)... I really need all the help I can get, basically. What I think I need, from reading the debian site: A Devel_comp setup with X11 (planning for sound) and Server_std. Will promise to do my homework on install docs and sound setup, but need pointers + - miracles to start this well... people directly involved and/or about to be: j.impett(a)uea.ac.uk (music faculty) m.dixon(a)uea.ac.uk (researcher, ARiADA, SARA, music department) d.casal(a)uea.ac.uk (me, codemonkey helper for the above projects, XHTML, SMIL, etc) pseudoshark(a)netscapeonline.co.uk (edward.kelly(a)uea.ac.uk postgraduate researcher @ MUS) any help at all will be greatly appreciated. cheers, david casal

Your project manager appears to have a real problem with keeping his various roles apart. The Smoothwall website mentions *both* VA and a project to start a new LUG. While it makes it clear Smoothwall is not a VA project, it does no such thing about SUK-LUG. It may surprise you that some southern English LUGs are taking this combined with Richard not answering requests for material as offensive. OK, it shouldn't surprise you, but it may ;-) -- MJR

[Denny <denny@concretecow.com>] UK LUGs useless?

What that LinuxUK/SmoothWall comment was about. Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 11:00:45 +0000 (GMT) From: Denny <denny(a)concretecow.com> To: MK LUG <mk(a)lists.lug.org.uk> If you read the recent announcement on www.linuxuk.co.uk about the release of SmoothWall, you will note that the author is less than impressed with the amount of help he has received from people in the UK LUGs. There are a few replies on there from people (myself included) who run LUGs, but I thought it might be good if a few LUG members wanted to comment also? Have a read and see what you think of his opinions... please try to respond intelligently, not in a confrontational manner. Paul Tansom <paul(a)whaletales.co.uk> writes: > be the LUG/Community liaison for the Smoothwall project - Mark/MJR go easy on > me I've read the LinuxUK site ;-) I've no problem with SmoothWall or VA wanting to work with LUGs. I do have a serious problem with them setting up *new* LUGs because groups they haven't talked to haven't helped them. Sorry, but the telepathic networking device isn't working yet... Anyway, more VA involvement in the increasingly competitive UK Linux arena would be better for all concerned. I'll be glad to see it at last. -- MJR

IRC meeting reminders
by Adam Bower 05 Dec '00

Hi all, I forgot again as usual about the weekly irc meet, would it not be useful to others (not only me) if someone setup a job that emails the list every monday around 4-5pm'ish as a reminder that the meet is taking place, where it is etc? I could do it from a box at work but maybe the list admin (Savs or Mark?) would have a better way of doing it? Adam
