OT: Are there any Bluetooth gurus here - bluetooth question
by Chris G 27 Apr '09

27 Apr '09

Are there any bluetooth gurus here? First:- Can anyone tell me where I might find a bluetooth FAQ of any sort which might tell me something useful about how bluetooth devices interconnect (or don't)? The 'official' http://www.bluetooth.com site is pretty useless - or at least I can't get any useful information out of it. Second:- Is there such a thing as a bluetooth 'pseudo phone' that will connect by bluetooth to a device (such as a headset) that is expecting a bluetooth phone to connect to it? I wan't to send and receive audio to/from a bluetooth headset but the headset will only pair with a bluetooth phone. The second question is the reason for the first really, I was trying to find out the answer for myself but without much luck. I *think* I have got as far as understanding that there are different types of bluetooth device and there are defined protocols for them to talk to each other but I can't find out what types there are and what will talk to what. -- Chris Green

Ubuntu & Xubuntu Questions.
by Simon Royal 27 Apr '09

27 Apr '09

Hi I am a Mac user with an interest in Linux. I have a PowerBook G4 867Mhz with 1GB of RAM, so am looking at the PowerPC ports of Ubuntu. I spoke to a couple of people that said the latest version - 9.04 - doesn't run too well on machines under 1Ghz, so was looking at Xubuntu which is better suited for older machines. It says it will run on G3 with 128MB of RAM comfortably - making it probably pretty quick on a machine with mid range G4 with 1GB. Has anyone used Xubuntu? Does it differ much to Ubuntu apart from using the XFE desktop environment? Does the latest 9.04 support Broadcom based Airport Extreme cards - I have a Buffalo card which OSX picks up as an AE card. Secondly, I'd like some booting advice. I am triple booting OS9, OSX Tiger and OSX Leopard at the moment and was looking to maybe quad boot - so I would need to resize some of the partitions. Or I might just install it where the Tiger partition is. Does the Xubuntu installer cater for multi booting with OSX? Is there an option to select which OS is the default to boot into. I had Ubuntu 6 and Tiger on a PowerBook G3 before and could never get Yaboot to select OSX by default. Any help would be grateful. Simon Royal --- Visit my Mac site at http://www.simonroyal.co.uk. Or Skype me on 'Simon-Royal'. (Apple PowerBook G4 867Mhz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, SuperDrive. Mac OSX 10.5, 10.4 & 9.2.2...)

Hosting/ssh/news server recommendations wanted
by Chris G 17 Apr '09

17 Apr '09

I currently have all my web hosting (very little), mail and usenet news from Gradwell Dot Com, in general I'm happy with the service but they do seem to be becoming a specialist VOIP supplier with the web hosting playing second fiddle so I'm looking for alternatives so that I can spread the risk a bit and/or be ready to move if I feel the need. I realise it's quite a spread of services I'm after so maybe there aren't any other 'Gradwells' out there that can provide it all in which case I may go for separate suppliers. I suppose that at least minimises the chaos if something goes wrong. What I'm after is:- A good, fast, no binaries, NNTP server. Preferably associated with an ssh shell hosting service so that I can run a command line news reader with near instant response from the NNTP server. When I moved to Gradwell it was a revelation how fast their service was compared with anything that accessed the NNTP server across the internet. Mail forwarding under my control in some shape or form. Currently most of our (family and small business) mail is read usign the IMAP servers at Gradwell except for mine which I forward to the machine where I have the ssh account and read it with mutt there. Hosting with ssh access. I'm wondering if a virtual server might make sense, they're available for a tenner a month (or less?) now. Does anyone here have experience of virtual servers? Any recommendations (or otherwise) for good hosting would be welcome, one major criterion is fast interactive ssh access as I do all of news and mail handling via ssh to 'their' server. Oh, one final "nice to have" requirement - while Googling around yesterday I saw one hosting site offering ssh access *plus* a web to ssh interface so you could get to the command line from anywhere with a browser. I.e. you wouldn't have to install putty onto a friend's machine to read your mail. -- Chris Green

AAO Sleep Button with 2.6.29
by Richard Lewis 16 Apr '09

16 Apr '09

Hi ALUG, My kernel on my Acer Aspire One got upgraded to 2.6.29 recently and since then my sleep button (Fn+F4) somehow does a suspend to disk when pressed. This is quite clever but also quite annoying as I have a carefully crafted Fluxbox configuration which does various useful jobs like logging me out of my Jabber client and then doing suspend to RAM when I press Fn+F4. Does anyone have any ideas how I may be able to regain control of my sleep button? I tried looking through /etc/acpi and /use/share/acpi-support but there doesn't seem to be anything in there to do with the sleep button. XFedora?
by Chris Walker 16 Apr '09

16 Apr '09

Has anybody had a play with XFedora on an Xbox? I was given an Xbox, note that this is not a 360, and decided that I might be able to use it to play things DviX files which might be stored on this PC or on my wife's laptop. So I removed the original 10GB(?) drive and put in a 40GB drive which XFedora has used. I had also tried various other distros such as XDSL and Gentoox but they only seemed to install in an F: partition which I didn't want. I have also installed a modchip so that it can now boot without needing a modded game cheat. My query is this. XFedora appears to be running version 4 of Fedora so does anybody know if it would be possible, and worthwhile, to update it? Before everybody jumps in and says that it's easy to update, I should point out that I don't currently have a mouse on the box as I only have one USB adapter and that's taken up with a keyboard. I have ordered another adapter but that's winging it's way over from China now. If I 'startx' the system comes up fine (I'm not yet clear on how I will want to play any files on the system but if my wife wants to do this, I don't think she'd be keen on running things from a command line and hence the possible need for X-Windows) but due to the lack of a mouse, I can't click on the Update icon on the taskbar. I can connect it online and Firebird will reach the outside world but if I try to run 'yum grouplist', it can't find any repositories. I suspect that's because it's an old version. Am I right in that thought? So if somebody could point out how I can manipulate X-Windows without a mouse, that would be good too. P.S. If the moderator is reading this, apologies for sending it through first time from the wrong email address!

<<if your current flash was installed via a distro release package then I would recommend you un-install that first.>> I've done things the wrong way round then as I had a look for version 10 earlier. So, how do I uninstall version 9 (which is the one I actually have with this distro package whatever it says) before upgrading? I have looked in Synaptic but the only version that comes up is 10 now. Following on from Ted a question of my own. Every time I watch something using iPlayer (in Firefox) the sound is fine but the video is just that little bit behind. Trying to watch Dr Who a day or so ago the video also stuttered more than usual. Why is this and can I do anything about it? A Convert

Hi All I'm Kev an ancient wannabee geek who used to work in electronics and then IT doing application support and a little bit of development of software/web development. Had to leave the tech side and in fact stopped work for a while to look after my wife who suffered with a long time kidney problem before passing away in January this year. In the past when my brain worked I was MCSE qualified but feel better now. Had a passing interest in linux since the early Red Hat distro's but not had time to do anything serious. Since the advent of Gutsy have had a linux box around and now use a Hardy as my main box. As I theoretically have more time on my hands I will be trying to learn Linux seriously but am currently at the stage where a little knowledge is dangerous, so expect the normal really stupid noob questions/comments for a while. I am in the process of kick starting the tech/geek side of my brain by running a Hardy server as a dev box while I teach myself new IT skills such as linux administration, programming (java, python etc.), and web design (xhtml, css, php). The eventual goal will be to actually make fortune so I can give it away. Currently based in Thetford. Kev

"get_iplayer" puzzle
by Ted.Harding＠manchester.ac.uk 13 Apr '09

13 Apr '09

Hi Folks, Hoping you've been enjoying the Statutory Idleness! A query for any of you who use get_iplayer. I wanted to download the programme "Thinking Allowed" from Radio 4, first broadcast 08/04/2009, last broadcast last night at 00:15-00:45 (i.e. this morning), which is when I first heard it. It is the one about a Leeds art exhibition in which classic artists depict the social order (I found it very interesting, and recommend it to you even if you don't want anything to do with this query). The following refers to my latest attempt, this morning, to download the programme. It is similar to what happened last night -- a few incidental details differ. 1. I did the usual get_iplayer search, with a standard result: get_iplayer --type radio "Thinking Allowed" Matches: 12855: Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009, 'BBC Radio 4', Factual, Science, Nature & Environment,Radio INFO: 1 Matching Programmes 2. I did a standard download request, using its index 12855: get_iplayer --get 12855 INFO: Additionally getting cached programme data for radio Matches: 12855: radio, Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009, 'BBC Radio 4', Factual,Science, Nature & Environment,Radio INFO: 1 Matching Programmes INFO: Attempting to Download: Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009 INFO: Getting version pids for programme b00jj0f6 INFO: Getting media stream metadata for Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009, b00jj025 INFO: iPhone stream URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/3/auth/stream/ httpdl_iphone/direct/radio4/ secure_auth/RBN2_radio_4_fm_-_wednesday_1600_b00jj025_\ 2009_04_09_14_31_37.mp3 INFO: Checking existence of default version INFO: File name prefix = Thinking_Allowed_-_08_04_2009_b00jj0f6_default WARNING: Retrying download for 'Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009' INFO: Attempting to Download: Thinking Allowed - 08/04/2009 INFO: Getting version pids for programme b00jj0f6 ERROR: Required mplayer does not exist, skipping which was unexpected -- usually such a command simply downloads the MP3 without more ado, and doesn't witter on about mplayer not existing! 3. As a test of get_iplayer, I tried another of yesterday's programmes. First, find its index: get_iplayer --type radio "The Reunion" Matches: 12793: The Reunion - 12/04/2009, 'BBC Radio 4', Factual,Entertainment,Life Stories,Radio INFO: 1 Matching Programmes 4. Do the download (exactly the same syntax as before): get_iplayer --get 12793 INFO: Additionally getting cached programme data for radio Matches: 12793: radio, The Reunion - 12/04/2009, 'BBC Radio 4', Factual,Entertainment,Life Stories,Radio INFO: 1 Matching Programmes INFO: Attempting to Download: The Reunion - 12/04/2009 INFO: Getting version pids for programme b00jlxjp INFO: Getting media stream metadata for The Reunion - 12/04/2009, b00jlwpw INFO: iPhone stream URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/3/auth/stream/ httpdl_iphone/direct/radio4/ secure_auth/RBN2_radio_4_fm_-_s unday_\ 1115_b00jlwpw_2009_04_12_11_20_37.mp3 INFO: Checking existence of default version INFO: File name prefix = The_Reunion_-_12_04_2009_b00jlxjp_default and then it happily started to download. Stopped it, since I don't want to keep that programme. The above info is essentially the same as for "Thinking Allowed" until the former gets to the "WARNING" line. 5. Went back to "Thinking Allowed" and proceeded as before. Same result as before. So, QUERY: Can anyone explain why one programme ("The Reunion") downloads without problems. while the other (by all appearances on the same sort of footing) fails to donwload? Is there possibly some hidden "flag", planted by the BBC for some programmes, which allows them to be listened to (which one can do for "Thinking Allowed") but not downloaded, that get_iplayer picks up but does not tell you about? Or is there a bug in the version (1.03) of get_iplayer I'm using? With thanks, Ted. -------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: (Ted Harding) <Ted.Harding(a)manchester.ac.uk> Fax-to-email: +44 (0)870 094 0861 Date: 13-Apr-09 Time: 10:38:16 ------------------------------ XFMail ------------------------------

telnet/ftp "connection refused"
by Ted.Harding＠manchester.ac.uk 10 Apr '09

10 Apr '09

Hi Folks, I've been meaning to raise this for some time, since I've never got to the bottom of what's causing it. Basically, I want *all* the machines on my local LAN to be able to telnet and ftp to each other. Between the older machines (Suse 5.2, Suse 7,2 and red Hat 9) there is no problem. But I've had a Debian Etch running now for about 18 months, and recently a Debian Lenny (provisional installation), and both of these deny attempts to telnet or ftp into them from the others ("connection refused"). However, I can of course telnet and ftp from either of these to any of the older machines. I have put ALL: ALL in the /etc/hosts.allow file (like in the older machines), but this does not seem to make any difference. I get the impression that access control has changed in some fundamental way, but I can't put my finger on it! Any suggestions gratefully welcomed! apache question
by Chris G 09 Apr '09

09 Apr '09

A much simpler question than I originally envisaged (the more complicated one may follow). What apache2 directive allows URLs to omit the trailing .html? Half of my pages work without the html and the other half don't and for the life of me I can't find a directive anywhere that would affect this. E.g. I can refer to either:- http://home.isbd.net/sidebar.html http://home.isbd.net/sidebar and they both work but if I go to:- http://home.isbd.net/manual/en/mod/core.html http://home.isbd.net/manual/en/mod/core The first one works but the second one (without the .html) gives a page not found error. -- Chris Green

[OT?] Bank Holidays
by Mark Rogers 08 Apr '09

08 Apr '09

Does anyone have any ideas how (from a script) I can determine whether a date is a (UK) bank holiday? Something I can use from PHP preferred but I'm flexible. Since the dates aren't consistent I assume I'm going to need somewhere to look the information up, but I'm not sure where, but it seems like this ought to be a fairly "standard" need. (For my application I need to allow website customers to select a delivery date, which needs to exclude bank holidays.) I'm hoping there's a standard method. -- Mark Rogers // More Solutions Ltd (Peterborough Office) // 0845 45 89 555 Registered in England (0456 0902) at 13 Clarke Rd, Milton Keynes, MK1 1LG

Has come down in price again. Now under £160 at Dabs http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=5DJT&InMerch=1 That's £30 less than I paid only a few weeks ago. They also have the same beast with half a Gig of RAM for under £140. Astounding.
