XFedora?

Has anybody had a play with XFedora on an Xbox? I was given an Xbox, note that this is not a 360, and decided that I might be able to use it to play things DviX files which might be stored on this PC or on my wife's laptop. So I removed the original 10GB(?) drive and put in a 40GB drive which XFedora has used. I had also tried various other distros such as XDSL and Gentoox but they only seemed to install in an F: partition which I didn't want. I have also installed a modchip so that it can now boot without needing a modded game cheat. My query is this. XFedora appears to be running version 4 of Fedora so does anybody know if it would be possible, and worthwhile, to update it? Before everybody jumps in and says that it's easy to update, I should point out that I don't currently have a mouse on the box as I only have one USB adapter and that's taken up with a keyboard. I have ordered another adapter but that's winging it's way over from China now. If I 'startx' the system comes up fine (I'm not yet clear on how I will want to play any files on the system but if my wife wants to do this, I don't think she'd be keen on running things from a command line and hence the possible need for X-Windows) but due to the lack of a mouse, I can't click on the Update icon on the taskbar. I can connect it online and Firebird will reach the outside world but if I try to run 'yum grouplist', it can't find any repositories. I suspect that's because it's an old version. Am I right in that thought? So if somebody could point out how I can manipulate X-Windows without a mouse, that would be good too. P.S. So, how do I uninstall version 9 (which is the one I actually have with this distro package whatever it says) before upgrading? I have looked in Synaptic but the only version that comes up is 10 now. iPlayer

Following on from Ted a question of my own. Every time I watch something using iPlayer (in Firefox) the sound is fine but the video is just that little bit behind. Trying to watch Dr Who a day or so ago the video also stuttered more than usual. Why is this and can I do anything about it? Having hunted around on various forums I'm beginning to supect the answer is 'well, no actually.' Thanks. A Convert

Hi All I'm Kev an ancient wannabee geek who used to work in electronics and then IT doing application support and a little bit of development of software/web development. Had to leave the tech side and in fact stopped work for a while to look after my wife who suffered with a long time kidney problem before passing away in January this year. In the past when my brain worked I was MCSE qualified but feel better now. Had a passing interest in linux since the early Red Hat distro's but not had time to do anything serious. Since the advent of Gutsy have had a linux box around and now use a Hardy as my main box. As I theoretically have more time on my hands I will be trying to learn Linux seriously but am currently at the stage where a little knowledge is dangerous, so expect the normal really stupid noob questions/comments for a while. I am in the process of kick starting the tech/geek side of my brain by running a Hardy server as a dev box while I teach myself new IT skills such as linux administration, programming (java, python etc.), and web design (xhtml, css, php). The eventual goal will be to actually make fortune so I can give it away. Currently based in Thetford. Kev

"get_iplayer" puzzle

I wanted to download the programme "Thinking Allowed" from Radio 4, first broadcast 08/04/2009, last broadcast last night at 00:15-00:45 (i.e. this morning), which is when I first heard it. It is the one about a Leeds art exhibition in which classic artists depict the social order (I found it very interesting, and recommend it to you even if you don't want anything to do with this query). The following refers to my latest attempt, this morning, to download the programme. It is similar to what happened last night -- a few incidental details differ. 1. So, QUERY: Can anyone explain why one programme ("The Reunion") downloads without problems. while the other (by all appearances on the same sort of footing) fails to donwload? Is there possibly some hidden "flag", planted by the BBC for some programmes, which allows them to be listened to (which one can do for "Thinking Allowed") but not downloaded, that get_iplayer picks up but does not tell you about? Or is there a bug in the version (1.03) of get_iplayer I'm using? telnet/ftp "connection refused"

Hi Folks, I've been meaning to raise this for some time, since I've never got to the bottom of what's causing it. Basically, I want *all* the machines on my local LAN to be able to telnet and ftp to each other. Between the older machines (Suse 5.2, Suse 7,2 and red Hat 9) there is no problem. But I've had a Debian Etch running now for about 18 months, and recently a Debian Lenny (provisional installation), and both of these deny attempts to telnet or ftp into them from the others ("connection refused"). However, I can of course telnet and ftp from either of these to any of the older machines. I have put ALL: ALL in the /etc/hosts.allow file (like in the older machines), but this does not seem to make any difference. I get the impression that access control has changed in some fundamental way, but I can't put my finger on it! Any suggestions gratefully welcomed! apache question

A much simpler question than I originally envisaged (the more complicated one may follow). What apache2 directive allows URLs to omit the trailing .html? Half of my pages work without the html and the other half don't and for the life of me I can't find a directive anywhere that would affect this. E.g. I can refer to either:- http://home.isbd.net/sidebar.html http://home.isbd.net/sidebar and they both work but if I go to:- http://home.isbd.net/manual/en/mod/core.html http://home.isbd.net/manual/en/mod/core The first one works but the second one (without the .html) gives a page not found error. -- Chris Green

[OT?] Bank Holidays

Does anyone have any ideas how (from a script) I can determine whether a date is a (UK) bank holiday? Something I can use from PHP preferred but I'm flexible. Since the dates aren't consistent I assume I'm going to need somewhere to look the information up, but I'm not sure where, but it seems like this ought to be a fairly "standard" need. (For my application I need to allow website customers to select a delivery date, which needs to exclude bank holidays.) Hullo there, Does anyone use trac on debian? I've just upgraded a server from etch to lenny. It had a backport version of trac 0.11.1-2~bpo40+1. The lenny version is 0.11.1-2 However, the backports package refuses to uninstall to make way for the new version. Installation errors show: Preparing to replace trac 0.11.1-2~bpo40+1 (using .../trac_0.11.1-2.1_all.deb) ... I want to download the "patch" from the Vodafone site so I can run a PAYG mobile internet dongle on my Eee, running on that 'orrid Fisher Price Linux, FTTB. There is a patch somewhere on the Vodafone website for this purpose, but despite using all the keywords I can think of to search it, the download has been frustratingly fugitive. File permissions for FTP and Apache

I have a server running PureFTP and Apache. If I create an FTP user, it gets a directory under /home/ftpusers owned by ftpuser.ftpgroup I need to create an FTP user that can upload images that the webserver will use (simple: I symlink the directory into the relevant path in DocumentRoot), however I also need Apache to be able to write to the files (images will be uploaded by the website admin backend as well as via FTP). How do I achieve this? I can add Apache (www-data) to ftpgroup, which should solve this but would also give Apache write access to all files uploaded by any FTP user, which I don't want to do. I can make the files world-writeable, which I don't like in principle, but also is going to cause problems as images get uploaded by FTP or Apache (eg new images are not going to inherit the world-write permissions without some changes to the FTP configuration and the web application). ubuntu - display configuration

ubuntu 7.04 to 8.04 all had in the menu "Screens & Graphics GUI for setting up. Or via terminal displayconfig-gtk. Useful if you want to use two monitors or have an electronic whiteboard. Just been trying out 8.10 wondering how much has been changed from 8.04 and couldn't find displayconfig-gtk. I thought they might have put it in 'configuration editor' but haven't. Has it been replaced with another app - doesn't seem likely to have left it out expecting you to change xorg instead? thanks james

xsession errors

Still getting them. For example: Could not read Pidgin buddy list file: Could not find file "/home/peter/.purple/blist.xml". Cannot index Thunderbird contacts because a System.ArgumentNullException was thrown: Argument cannot be null. And yet, I don't have either Pidgin or Thunderbird installed. Any idea what's going on? 32/64-bit? Intel T2390

Hi Folks, Once upon a time I didn't need to ask this kind of question ... I'm about to install Linux (probably Debian) on a laptop which has an Intel Core Duo T2390 CPU. So I'm wondering whether it I should use i386 or ia64. I *think* (but am not sure) that this chip has 64-bit capability (though that may need to be enabled somehow). Presumably i386 would work anyway, but it would be nice to enjoy the benefits of 64-bit architecture if available! Since this is my first time facing this question, I'm totally naive about the installation implications, and would welcome informed advice and/or comments! Evolution woes

Is anyone else here masochist enough to use evolution ? With the standard build on Ubuntu 8.10 (2.24.3) I am getting some strange problems. It seems to get triggered by either closing down my workstation while evolution is running or launching a second instance via x forwarding Either way when this happens it seems to corrupt folders.db resulting in the the following issues When I restart everything I have sent from the last time it was started is back in the outbox and gets resent (you have probably seen this on the list) The unread count for some folders doesn't tally with the number of unread messages in the folder, for example at the moment it says I have 80 unread items in "Deleted items" but if I hide read items in that folder I see I have none unread. If I follow the advice I found online of deleting folders.db and launching evolution in offline mode the db is rebuilt and the problems seem to go away for a bit. But one restart with it accidentally left running or as I think I did the other day where I had it running once locally and once in a forwarded session it reappears. To make matters worse when I delete folders.db I lose message flags which I actually sometimes use. Has anyone else experienced/fixed this ?

spampd not adding headers

Hi ALUG, I have spampd running on my laptop $ ps auxw|grep spam [...] /usr/bin/perl -T /usr/sbin/spampd --L --tagall --port=10025 --host=127.0.0.1 --relayport=10026 --relayhost=127.0.0.1 --pid=/var/run/spampd.pid --children=3 --user=spampd --group=spampd --logsock=unix and I pass all my messages to it from procmail using: :0fw: spammassassin.lock | /usr/bin/spamc However, none of my messages (spam or ham) have any spamassassin headers in them. If I direct a message into spamassassin proper (i.e. not spamc) it adds the headers as expected. If I do the same into spamc I get no headers. I found somthing about the -A option to spamd to tell it to allow certain IP addresses to use the spamassassin server (e.g. 127.0.0.1). However, this is an option to spamd, not spampd.
