I've tried it again and instead of using Terminal, opened Real Player from the drop down menu and pasted the URL into that while the original BBC window was open and it worked. Email server and spam filtering
by mephi 28 Jul '07

28 Jul '07

I've started setting up an email server, and it's going quite well so far, but I want to add spam filtering. It's not a normal email server, it's more of a central storage for all of my external email accounts, so what I've got so far is: Setup one Linux user account per email account. Getmail receives the mail, and stores it in maildir format if each user's home directory. Dovecot acts as a local IMAP server to allow me to pick up the emails from each user. What I want is a server side spam filter in there, has anyone done anything like this? Matt

Yes, that's exactly what happens Ted. But what's an xterm? And what's the alternative to a middle click? It's not an option on my mouse. (I am using Firefox btw.) Browsers segfault on "Lincolnshire"!
by ted.harding＠nessie.mcc.ac.uk 27 Jul '07

27 Jul '07

[Apologies if you get this twice -- initially sent from wrong email address] Hi Folks, I know the weather has been dire, especially for Lincolnshire in our region. But I didn't expect it to overwhelm a browser! When I try http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/ (the "Lincolnshire Echo" website) I get a segfault almost as soon as the page opens. This is with both Firefox 1.04 (2005) on Red Hat 9, and also Mozilla 1.3 (2003) on a SuSE 7.2 installation (so it's not due to anything didgy on a particular machine). Anyone else can confirm/comment on this observation? apt-get error: Dynamic MMap ran out of room
by sagr 25 Jul '07

Our fileserver is running an ancient version of Debian:(Linux zebra 2.4.18-bf2.4 #1 Son Apr 14 09:53:28 CEST 2002 i586 unknown). I thought however it would be nice to try and install geneweb on it (if indeed this package is available for this ancient Debian). However when I try to do an apt-get I receive an error message saying that MMap has run out of room. I am a bit confused as there is about 4GB spare in /. What has gone wrong? Problem adding HP Deskjet 540 printer to Ubuntu 7.04
by sagr 24 Jul '07

24 Jul '07

Hi Folks, I would like to be able to print from my new Linux PC. I have an HP Deskjet 540c connected (via it's parallel printer port) to my PC running Ubuntu 7.04. On the desktop I click on System -> Administration -> Printing. A box appears with a "New Printer" icon and I click on this. A "gnome-cups-add" box appears with a message "Reading printer database". An "Add Printer Step 1 of 3" box appears. I click on the "Local Printer" option as my printer is not automatically detected and leave the "Use another printer by specifying a port" option selected. I select "HP" from the manufacturer list and "Deskjet 540C" from the "Model" list. It responds by showing "hpijs" as the suggested driver. I am then stuck. It appears I have two options. There is an "Install Driver" button next to the "Suggested Driver" box. If I click on that button a box pops up which seems to be asking me for the location of the driver (which I do not know). Alternatively I can simply click on the "Forward" button to move onto the next screen. If I simply click on "Forward" to move to the next setup screen it asks me to enter a description for the printer. I type in "HP Deskjet 540 on desk" then click on "apply". The box stays on the screen for several seconds while my PC hard disk light flashes like mad and then the box disappears revealing just the "Printers" box (which was behind it) on the desktop. This box however just shows the "New Printer" icon... I was expecting it to also show an icon for my newly installed printer. Also if I actually try to now print something from an app the only option the "Print" menu option gives me is "Print To File". It would seem that my attempt at adding the printer fails even though no error message is shown. What am I doing wrong? Sagr.

How to garden gnome?
by ted.harding＠nessie.mcc.ac.uk 23 Jul '07

23 Jul '07

Hi Folks, I'm looking for a bit of Gnome expertise ... Suppose I have a Gnome desktop with a number of "workspaces", say 10. What I want to do is "transplant" a window from one workspace to another under software control (e.g. a shell script). Gnome certainly has an internal mechanism for this, since if you click on the little square button at the top left of a window, you get a menu which includes options to "Move to Workspace n". Is there a way to send a code or signal to a window which would cause this to happen? A related question: can one program the opening of a window so that it is initially "planted" in a chosen workspace? With thanks, Ted. -------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: (Ted Harding) <Ted.Harding(a)manchester.ac.uk> Fax-to-email: +44 (0)870 094 0861 Date: 21-Jul-07 Time: 20:34:21 ------------------------------ XFMail ------------------------------

Ubuntu 7.04 apt-get error when installing packages
by sagr 23 Jul '07

Hi Folks, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a PC a few minutes ago and would like to install the package "gramps" on it. Unfortunately however apt-get keeps crashing out with the following error: ian@flower:~$ sudo apt-get install gramps Password: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Recommended packages: graphviz python-reportlab The following NEW packages will be installed gramps 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 103 not upgraded. Blender Tutorial - Thanks!
by Martijn Koster 16 Jul '07

16 Jul '07

A big thank-you to Richard Bensley for this tutorial, and to Richard Lewis for arranging a venue. I never knew I was a spaceship designer and human sculptor! Okay, perhaps I'm not, but I had a lot of fun, and it was very interesting to play with something outside my usual use of Linux. And Richard explained this tricky material both well and with enthusiasm. I think the format worked well: The presenter instructed the class and a helper with a computer on the projector, the class brought laptops, and the presenter could use the whiteboard, walk around to troubleshoot etc. With tea and biscuits, what more could you want :-) Tip: Blender uses the numeric keypad heavily, so make sure it works, or for best effect use an external keyboard. Mine didn't work, fortunately I could do a hardware swap with Joe (ta!). I managed to fix my laptop this morning with this voodoo: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_get_special_keys_to_work#NumLock The other problem my laptop encountered was a box mode select graphics card driver issue (just like http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3593/problemtj6.png) that I haven't fixed yet. -- Martijn

login incorrect error for passwordless account
by sagr 15 Jul '07

15 Jul '07

Hi Folks, I have just installed openSUSE 10.2 on a spare PC. The PC boots up to the Linux ascii login prompt ok: Welcome to openSUSE 10.2 (i586) - Kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default (tty1) Linux login: However if I enter the login name "root" the PC immediately comes back and says: login incorrect. i.e. it recognises that root does not require a password but will not let me login. I have booted the PC using the install CD and can see the files on the hard disk. If I look at /etc/shadow I can see that the root entry does not require a password. I have therefore used vi to create an passwordless entry for a test user "tux" in /etc/password and /etc/shadow and also create a /home/tux directory and assigned it to user tux, group users however, after rebooting I still get the "login incorrect" error when I try to login as either tux or root. What has gone wrong? Any suggestions on how to login would be welcome. Sagr

Creating Customer Login facility on a website
by sagr 14 Jul '07

14 Jul '07

Our company has used email and ftp file transfers between itself and it's customers for quite some time. However it is only in the last few days that I have started to create a simple website for it. I have however got stuck with how to create a customer login page. Traditionally we have put files for individual customers to download in individual .htpaccess protected directories, so that, for example, files for customer1 have been put in /customers/001, and files for customer2 have been put in /customers/002. This has worked well but now we are getting a website I would like to provide a better user interface and have a single common "Customer Area" webpage where our customers can type in their login name and password and then be automatically taken to a protected personal webpage listing the files waiting for them to download. i.e. if they login with the username: firstname1.surname1 they will automatically be taken to website/customers/001/index.html Does anyone have any suggestions how to achieve this. Our customer base is quite stable so setting up the individual login data entries in an ascii configuration file by hand would not worry me. Any suggestions welcome. sagr.

Blender Tutorial - Venue & Time Confirmed
by Richard Bensley 13 Jul '07

13 Jul '07

Hello everyone, I have been laying out my final lesson plan, numbers for the class seem to be closer to 10 now, which is great! The venue has been confirmed, thanks to Richard Lewis for organising this for me. He has very kindly booked the Concert Room for 13:00-18:00 for the 14th of July, location details are as follows: It will be in the Concert Room of the UEA Music Department. The Music Department is the building marked A2 near the centre-bottom of this map and the main car park is P1, at the top: http://www.uea.ac.uk/campus_2004.pdf The building is only small so the Concert Room is easy to find: turn right as you enter the building and its the first door on your right. Details about parking can be found here: http://www.est.uea.ac.uk/transport/car_parking.asp Thanks again Richard. There are many more chairs than tables, laptops would be preferred to desktops. The Version of Blender we will be using is 2.44 which can be obtained from here: http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/ If anyone has anymore questions, you can get hold of me on the list or on IRC. Many thanks and I look forward to seeing some of you on the 14th. Richard

11 Jul '07

Hi, I have just joined ALUG and the subscription confirmation asked me to say Hello and introduce myself. I am the technical guy for the Suffolk Ancestor Genealogy Research Service and am trying to show my company the advantages of switching to Linux. I have a bit of experience with PCs and networking but only have basic Linux knowledge. I use an ancient version of Mandrake on my home PC and am fairly comfortable using it but am continually frustrated that the main applications I use (an ancient version of Quicken and eBay TurboLister) are MS Windows only meaning I still have to keep dual-booting. As far as Linux goes I have a couple of problems I am stuck on which I will discuss over the next few days, but this is just a quick "Hello". Ian.
