How to garden gnome?

Hi Folks, I'm looking for a bit of Gnome expertise ... Suppose I have a Gnome desktop with a number of "workspaces", say 10. What I want to do is "transplant" a window from one workspace to another under software control (e.g. a shell script). Gnome certainly has an internal mechanism for this, since if you click on the little square button at the top left of a window, you get a menu which includes options to "Move to Workspace n". Is there a way to send a code or signal to a window which would cause this to happen? A related question: can one program the opening of a window so that it is initially "planted" in a chosen workspace? Ubuntu 7.04 apt-get error when installing packages

Hi Folks, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on a PC a few minutes ago and would like to install the package "gramps" on it. Unfortunately however apt-get keeps crashing out with the following error: ian@flower:~$ sudo apt-get install gramps Password: Reading package lists... Kopete and that stupid blue highlight!

Hi, I've just started playing with Kopete IM client. Seems very nice so far.... (you can feel the but coming on can't you!) How do I turn off that stupid blue highlight on every alternate contact in the contact list. It looks ridiculous. The coloured heads next to the name are fine.. but why does every other name have to have a stupuid blue background???? Blender Tutorial - Thanks!

A big thank-you to Richard Bensley for this tutorial, and to Richard Lewis for arranging a venue. I never knew I was a spaceship designer and human sculptor! Okay, perhaps I'm not, but I had a lot of fun, and it was very interesting to play with something outside my usual use of Linux. And Richard explained this tricky material both well and with enthusiasm. I think the format worked well: The presenter instructed the class and a helper with a computer on the projector, the class brought laptops, and the presenter could use the whiteboard, walk around to troubleshoot etc. With tea and biscuits, what more could you want :-) Tip: Blender uses the numeric keypad heavily, so make sure it works, or for best effect use an external keyboard. Mine didn't work, fortunately I could do a hardware swap with Joe (ta!). Hi Folks, I have just installed openSUSE 10.2 on a spare PC. The PC boots up to the Linux ascii login prompt ok: Welcome to openSUSE 10.2 (i586) - Kernel 2.6.18.2-34-default (tty1) Linux login: However if I enter the login name "root" the PC immediately comes back and says: login incorrect. i.e. it recognises that root does not require a password but will not let me login. I have booted the PC using the install CD and can see the files on the hard disk. If I look at /etc/shadow I can see that the root entry does not require a password. I have therefore used vi to create an passwordless entry for a test user "tux" in /etc/password and /etc/shadow and also create a /home/tux directory and assigned it to user tux, group users however, after rebooting I still get the "login incorrect" error when I try to login as either tux or root. What has gone wrong? Any suggestions on how to login would be welcome. Sagr

Creating Customer Login facility on a website

Our company has used email and ftp file transfers between itself and it's customers for quite some time. However it is only in the last few days that I have started to create a simple website for it. I have however got stuck with how to create a customer login page. Traditionally we have put files for individual customers to download in individual .htpaccess protected directories, so that, for example, files for customer1 have been put in /customers/001, and files for customer2 have been put in /customers/002. This has worked well but now we are getting a website I would like to provide a better user interface and have a single common "Customer Area" webpage where our customers can type in their login name and password and then be automatically taken to a protected personal webpage listing the files waiting for them to download. i.e. if they login with the username: firstname1.surname1 they will automatically be taken to website/customers/001/index.html Does anyone have any suggestions how to achieve this. Our customer base is quite stable so setting up the individual login data entries in an ascii configuration file by hand would not worry me. Any suggestions welcome. sagr.

Blender Tutorial - Venue & Time Confirmed

Hello everyone, I have been laying out my final lesson plan, numbers for the class seem to be closer to 10 now, which is great! The venue has been confirmed, thanks to Richard Lewis for organising this for me. He has very kindly booked the Concert Room for 13:00-18:00 for the 14th of July, location details are as follows: It will be in the Concert Room of the UEA Music Department. The Music Department is the building marked A2 near the centre-bottom of this map and the main car park is P1, at the top: http://www.uea.ac.uk/campus_2004.pdf The building is only small so the Concert Room is easy to find: turn right as you enter the building and its the first door on your right. Hi, I have just joined ALUG and the subscription confirmation asked me to say Hello and introduce myself. I am the technical guy for the Suffolk Ancestor Genealogy Research Service and am trying to show my company the advantages of switching to Linux. I have a bit of experience with PCs and networking but only have basic Linux knowledge. I use an ancient version of Mandrake on my home PC and am fairly comfortable using it but am continually frustrated that the main applications I use (an ancient version of Quicken and eBay TurboLister) are MS Windows only meaning I still have to keep dual-booting. As far as Linux goes I have a couple of problems I am stuck on which I will discuss over the next few days, but this is just a quick "Hello". Ian.

Tool for managing images

What do people recommend for managing images (i.e. hundreds of digital camera pictures)? I don't fant a full blown image manipulation and album creation thing like digikam, I want a basic file manager that will show me thumbnail images and allow me to drag and drop them around the place. -- Chris Green

Debian GB Localisation

Here's a new one, I haven't yet entirely figured out with Google ... What places do I need to modify to rid myself of all the US-isms? I've changed the Region and Keyboard layout to British in KDE, and I also worked out that I needed to add a specific GB localisation package for Iceweasel. What other places exist for setting the localisation? Are there any other applications which require additional GB localisation packages? I installed the localization-config tool after reading about it online, but if I run "update-locale-config -l" there doesn't seem to be a mention of GB English ... Thanks for any pointers, Peter.

Debian (Testing) Installation Issue

Hi, After some good advice whilst on IRC (albeit cut short cos my windows machine wouldn't stay up long enough to keep me logged in!), I've decided to try to install the latest version of Debian "testing" on my new HP laptop. Given I'd prefer a KDE desktop, I've downloaded this CD image: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-… Which I think should let me install what I want. Problem is, after installing most of the packages, the text-only installer messes up. The readable screen is replaced by funny coloured blocks - I can see it's asking me a question and can tab around the boxes on screen, but there's no way I can read any of it, as all the characters have been replaced by blocks. Soo ... I assume it's not playing nicely with my graphics card? or something? Any suggestions, on how I can get through the install? TIA, Peter.

5.25" boxes

I've found them very useful for storing data CDs, but I'm running out (probably have run out) and would love to get more, if anyone wants to get rid of any. Hello, Does anybody have a need for some tape drives? I have a (2 gig I think) SCSI Exabyte drive here with 6 112M tapes I also have a Tandberg 525MB tape drive, also SCSI and 2 full A4 paper boxes of tapes. The Tandberg drive worked when I tried it recently but it's so long along since I used the Exabyte that I have no idea if it works. Finally, I have 6 Sony QW 2GB tapes. They are labelled as 1GB Native, 2 GB Compressed. The tapes are slightly smaller than the Exabyte tapes and were a gift from somebody that thought I might be able to find a home for them! They're brand new, some still with shrinkwrap on them. As part of the gift, I was also given an Adaptec 2940AU SCSI PCI card. That also works as I used it to try the Tandberg. I'll split the lots so if you only want some of the tapes, or the drives, that's fine. Management (my wife) is telling me that I need to get shot of this lot. Hi Folks, There's a thread on the Zen Support Forum, Linux Division, with title "Setting screen res in Ubuntu 7.04". The start of the thread is at http://forum.zensupport.co.uk/thread/27097.aspx The topic has somewhat moved on from that, and the OP (Ken Odlum)'s problem is now that, using Ubuntu, while he apparently has two hard disks, one of which he can use normally, he can only read from the other and not write to it. This problem is first mentioned at http://forum.zensupport.co.uk/27097/27130/permalink/ShowThread.aspx#27130 and followed up at http://forum.zensupport.co.uk/27097/27151/permalink/ShowThread.aspx#27151 I ("eelman") intervened acouple of posts later, with suggestions 'cat /etc/fstab' etc. It seems he's dome this, and now http://forum.zensupport.co.uk/27097/27219/permalink/ShowThread.aspx#27219 he says "If I go to Places Computer it shows the other hard drive and I can mount it and read or copy from it OK" despite the fact that it's not in /etc/fstab. The only thing I can think of is that when he does that, whetever Ubuntu does behind the scenes amounts to an explicit mount -t ... /dev/hdb* /... command. But, not having any Ubuntu eperience, I simply don't know. If anyone can make a useful suggestio I could pass on, or better still is on the Zen Support Forum and can intervene directly, this would be welcome. The guy is a relatively recent convert to Linux, and I wouldn't like his faith to be compromised! Thanks, Mark -- interesting that you;ve had the same experience. The only issue (see end of you first para) is that he can read from it, but not write to it. evolution, squirrelmail and addressbook

Hullo there, Is it possible to export a contacts database in evolution in a format that can then be imported into squirrelmail? Evolution seem only to offer VCard export. Squirrelmail doesn't seem to offer any mass import at all (on debian anyway), but I can see the address file is a text file with the fields separated with a |. It would be possible to write a bit of code that does this, but I'm sure someone has done it already :) Thanks, Jenny
