dual booting probs
by elc＠freeola.net 22 Apr '07

First, I'm about as new as a newbie can get. Second, thanks for your suggestion, but I have done every which way I know to do as you suggest, but no luck. What I've done is to boot with a live cd (and I've used both Ubuntu and Kubuntu original cd's) gone into install, installed as far as partition and chosen "manual", chose not to format, and got to desktop. Opened terminal and 1) typed "grub-install" - and got something about not finding something (I didn't keep notes). 2) tried another way, typed "grub" - got "grub >" and typed " root (hda,7)", (which is where I think my root is) and got similar answer - cannot find ... etc. Perhaps I'm not doing this correctly. I've also tried to locate on my live cd's the rescue option (which everyone is saying is there) - perhaps I'm doing something wrong here to. Any suggestions warmly received, but please in terms of one syllable so that I can follow - and learn. I like linux, I want to use it instead of win98, don't want to pay Bill for anything else, but the early learning curve is a bit steep. Ubuntu/Debian and MySQL
by Mark Rogers 20 Apr '07

20 Apr '07

My understanding is that the standard MySQL startup scripts (for use in init.d) have the option of using mysqlmanager instead of mysqld_safe. The packaged versions for Debian (and therefore Ubuntu) do not have that option. Is anyone here running via mysqlmanager on a Debian-based system? How best should I go about it? NB: I have no experience of mysqlmanager but I need multiple mysqld instances and I think that's the way to go? I'm using MySQL version 5.0.22. mysqlmanager itself is installed. -- Mark Rogers // More Solutions Ltd (Peterborough Office) // 0845 45 89 555 Registered in England (0456 0902) at 13 Clarke Rd, Milton Keynes, MK1 1LG

ADMIN : Reminder that Alug is (generally) a plain text only list
by Adam Bower 20 Apr '07

20 Apr '07

Hi, List admin hadn't been done for a while and I've let through quite a few posts that have an html part attached. Could I remind/ask everyone who does post to the list to try and make sure they try to configure their client to send in plain text only. Or, if that isn't possible could they use a different mail service to send to the list? Sending mail to the list in html creates extra work for the admins and isn't necessary. I will let some posts from new subscribers with an html part through to the list but if you continue to do so you will get a reminder and your post will be deleted and you will have to resend it. If after a couple of reminders you carry on doing it then your mail will eventually just be silently discarded. If you need help on configuring your mail client to send in plain text then this page has some hints/tips http://www.expita.com/nomime.html if you are still stuck then please send a mail to the list asking for help and I'll let your mail through so that everyone can provide help/advice. Thanks Adam -- jabberid = quinophex(a)jabber.earth.li

I'm dual booting win98SE and Ubuntu, and have had a choice menu on bootup of either Ubuntu or windows, Ubuntu being the default. Due to a need of having to re-install win98SE, I have now lost this menu option and thus cannot access linux. How can I get this menu choice back. Thanks elc

gparted
by Jenny Hopkins 20 Apr '07

20 Apr '07

Hullo there. I have a computer currently dual-booted with a windows partition and a debian one. I want to use a small amount of disk space to install ubuntu to have a look at it. If I run gparted to try and shrink the current partitions, the resize option is not available. Is this because I didn't use LVM to create the original partitions? Is there any other tool I can use to resize? Thanks, Jenny

When anticipating the move to Scotland I joined, The Scottish Linux Users' Group, Tayside Linux User Group, Aberdeen Linux Users Group, and Highland LUG, thats about half the LUG's in Scotland. They don't, together, seem to generate as much list traffic as ALUG, and I thought that our population density was low. Epson Stylus C48 printer won't print

I've only recently joined so if this has been asked before sorry. To put you in the picture, I'm no geek when it comes to computers but I am keen to learn and I use Ubuntu 6.06LTS. The Epson printer, as I say, won't print. Not even a test page. Ubuntu recognises it, it knows what the print job is etc but absolutely nothing happens when I ask it to print. No noises, no nothing. "Linux in Classrooms in Delevoping Countries" - A presentation on 3rd May 6.30pm near Ipswich
by Richard Newbould 18 Apr '07

18 Apr '07

Hi All, I have just joined ALUG with a group from Ipswich. It's cool to be here. I have been developing a computer system for teaching in classrooms in developing countries based on Open Source software for the past 2 years. Some friends and I have also set up a charity called Switched On ( www.switchedon.org) and so far we have successfully installed systems in Thailand and India. I'll be giving an IEE talk about our experiences and the technologies we used at BT's research labs outside Ipswich on 3rd May. All are welcome. Hope you can make it! Poster - http://local.iee.org/anglian/meetings/ap03may.pdf *When and where:* Thursday 3rd May 2007 at 6.30pm Refreshments at 6.00pm Sir Alan Rudge Lecture Theatre, Adastral Park, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich IP5 3RE. *Synopsis:* Local charity, Switched On, has a vision to see, "Underprivileged peoples switched-on to the benefits of computing and the Internet." Helping individuals and communities cross the digital divide will be a vital form of empowerment for many, enabling beneficiaries to grow both in self-esteem and earning potential. Switched On is pioneering innovative, low-cost and effective computer systems to meet this gaping need. In technology terms we are using Open Source (Linux) software on a thin client architecture. Come and learn about the technologies we used and human challenges faced in deploying systems for poor communities in New Delhi, India and Bangkok, Thailand. Both IET Members and Non-Members are welcome. PLEASE NOTE A PASS WILL BE REQUIRED FOR ENTRY TO THIS VENUE PLEASE APPLY AT LEAST 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE TO ben.formesyn(a)bt.com For more information please see www.iee.org/anglian or contact ben.formesyn(a)bt.com Other IET talks: http://local.iee.org/anglian/ Cheers, Richard

Domain Registration & The Law (tm)
by James Taylor 18 Apr '07

18 Apr '07

Ok, can someone tell me the deal with Domain registration and what should be availible - as far as I was aware, you had to give your name and contact details when you register a domain unless its for personal use, and I thought this was a UK rule, but it seems that Scotland allows anonymous registration through privacy companies (who register the domain as being private with a private address). Is this right? I mean I guess its just one person registering the domain as their own, who isnt the person who is actually using it (like ISP's registering it on behalf of the person who wants it, but in the ISP's name not the persons name). Thanks JT

Thanks for the information from all who replied. I'm in two minds as to what to do, on the one hand I'm moving shortly, due to go on the first of June, so I could just hang on, and hope they last until then. Or try getting a connection for six weeks before I move, this latter doesn't seem to be a very likely solution as I can't think of anyone who wants to take new customers on a six week broadband contract. -- J.R. They've been pretty good, even during the hiccup with the firmware upgrades on Cisco routers that cause major problems with certain chipsets some time ago (Nildram were on the first batch to be upgraded, and Solwise big suppliers of hardware using the problem chipset, so I caught this one head on - Solwise were very helpful, Nildram did better than most ISPs would have). That said, their customer service has dipped slightly since Pipex took them over (although still no major complaints). Their prices haven't dipped at all though, not for the sort of service I need anyway, so I'm moving on to halve my monthly costs :) -- Paul Tansom | Aptanet Ltd. | http://www.aptanet.com/ ==================================================================== Aptanet Ltd. | Registered in England | Company No: 4905028 Registered Office: Crawford House, Hambledon Road, Denmead, Waterlooville, Hants., PO7 6NU
