VPN question, or how to get a single WiFi device to seem to be in the UK

I have a Kobo eReader which connects to a local network by WiFi. It uses the connection to download books (surprise) and also to do other things with my library on-line account. All very well when I'm in the UK but for (stupid?) reasons known only to themselves the Kobo/Overdrive/Library software and connections work only when the Kobo is connected to a UK IP address. So, when I'm trotting around the world, or more likely when I'm sitting in my little boat in France, I can't get the Kobo to update even though I have books available at the library. What makes it even sillier is that I *can* read the books on my laptop, even when connected from France, so it's not an issue about "you can't read that book in France" it's just a quirk of the eReader software. Anyway, down to the question, what's the simplest way to get a connection to the eReader such that the library/Overdrive software will think it's in the UK? I can see that it *could* be done with two VPN aware routers, one in the UK (I have Drayteks at home which can do VPN) and one here on the boat. However that does seem a rather heavyweight solution just to connect a single WiFi device. (and I don't have a VPN capable router here at the moment though in the longer term I could bring one out) Is there any other way of doing it (VPN or not, ssh maybe)? I already use an ssh proxy occasionally to allow my laptop to seem to be in the UK so I can connect to my NHS Doctor site (silly restriction again!). However I can't do this (so easily) with the eReader because it's basically a 'closed' system with just the eReader software in it. Any bright ideas anyone? -- Chris Green

Mint Cinnamon

Hello Is anyone else using Linux Mint 19.3 with Cinnamon desktop? I've found a bug I think. I'm in the habit of hitting [Alt][F2] to bring up a simple CLI application starter. On previous desktops (and Mint 19.2 I think) there's an autocomplete function and if you mistype you get an error message. On the current version bringing up the app starter greys out the rest of the screen and if you type correctly the full name and hit [Enter] it works OK. There's no autocomplete though and if you mistype and hit [Enter] then the dialog box freezes, the screen stays mostly grey and the panel stops working. The only way out as far as I can see is to logout or reboot. Fortunately the keyboard/mouse still work so you can bring up the menu with the 'winkey' and log out from there. I've tried PS UX in a terminal to try to find the process and kill it but there's nothing obvious there. I've tried Googling* without success. Any suggestions? Worth signing up to the Mint forums? PINEBOOK PRO UPDATE It's working fine, since updates Firefox is more stable so I've set that as default instead of Chromium. There's a dearth of browser plugins, I guess they have to be recompiled for ARM. I use ad blockers and tracker blockers normally plus 'copy plain text' but none of them are available. You Tube plays fine, sound is as you'd expect from tiny built-in speakers, OK for speech, terrible for music. I have a slightly odd use-case in that I have a canal/river cruiser and take long trips in the summer. Last year I installed a 12V radio/amp in the boat and ran my old laptop audio through that, I plan to do the same with the Pinebook Pro but haven't tried it yet. Unlike some trendier devices it still has a conventional 3mm audio-out socket. Libre Office and Gimp work OK except none of the GEGL operations seem to work in GIMP. They are a bit half-assed in the AMD64 version anyway so until it becomes mainstream you're not missing much. New themes are a bit of a lottery but the default appearance isn't bad and I've tweaked it a bit. The trackpad is much better since the firmware upgrade but I'd still like a wider target area on the window corners/edges to resize things. Mind you that's an issue on my Mint desktop too. Dodgy old eyesight and shaky hands probably don't help. Just read a review of a new KDE laptop. Advice please

I use Mint Cinnamon 19.3 and whilst trying to use kernel update, I caused the following msg. "You have 3 broken packages on your system. Use the 'Broken' filter to locate them." Somewhat beyond my limited Linux experience. Any advice on next step, or should I just ignore this kernel update, would be much appreciated. Tia Michael

Pinebook Pro

Hello Lugs, Xmas present to self was a PinebookPro <https://www.pine64.org/pinebook-pro/> Mostly I'm pleased with it but found two problems with no solutions on Pine forums (perils of being an early adopter). 1. This is an issue on my Mint Desktop too, and my wife's KDE Neon. Is there a way to make window borders wider? Or if not visually larger then make the target area bigger? When trying to manually resize a window I find it very hard with mouse or trackpad to hit the edge/corner to click and drag. Slim borders look great but don't work well (for me). 2. Specifically Pine but shows how much I don't understand... We have a laser printer connected by USB to my wife's PC (as she prints most) but 'shared' so I can print via ethernet from my desktop. My Mint PC found the share and set it up easily. The PinebookPro also finds it, but set up doesn't work. First, there's no Printer utility so I installed CUPS via Synaptic, then accessed it via localhost:631 in Chromium. Doesn't work so tried re-launching Chromium as root from terminal. That gets me into CUPS OK. It detects the shared printer OK but doesn't list the maker (Samsung). I guess that's because Samsung haven't released an ARM driver. I've never really understood why you need a locally installed driver anyway to use a printer installed on another PC (does anyone?) CUPS has an alternative for unlisted printers though, install a PPD file. So I downloaded it from Samsung and installed it. All the set up seems to go OK after that but trying to print just throws an error 'Unable to locate printer' which is weird because the setup DID locate it. Some interesting extras to this. Our router has a USB port that can be used with either NAS or shared printers. I tried that in the past and couldn't make it work at all. Someone suggested that the printer might request firmware from the PC and maybe the router doesn't understand the request. Whatever that's no help. The printer has an ethernet socket so could be a network printer, but the router has only 4 sockets and they are all occupied (server, smart TV, 2 desktops). Short of buying a switch that's out too. The printer also has WiFi which the network setting widget on the Pinebook finds automatically. It asks for a password which Samsung don't supply, they tell you to use the (Windows/OSX) set up CD! A mostly 'just thinking aloud' question about web security etc.

I have been looking at making some web pages of mine *slightly* more private recently. There's nothing seriously important on them, just some addresses (that people could find elsewhere easily enough) and some other similar sorts of bits and pieces. However, while I was doing this, I wondered about the "passwords are in clear when using HTTP" thing. If I go to my web site 'out there' and type in a password who/what/where/how will it be seen? Yes, I realise if someone has wireshark running on my LAN they will be able to see it (but my house is reasonably secure!) and, presumably, anyone monitoring packets whizzing around between me and the remote site would be able to see it. However there's a *lot* of packets flying around out there, how would anyone pick out any relevant bits? The remote end is 'mine' too in that it's a virtual server in France (Gandi Internet) so that is moderately secure too with no general access. Obviously anyone with access to the systems at either end of this transaction could see what's going on but then if they have that sort of access getting at a web page password is not going to get them any more access than they have already. This isn't bank access or accessing a big business/selling web site where snoopers might expect to get useful/valuable information so why (and how) would any sort of snooping work? What does the team think? Am I being too un-paranoid? (N.B. the passwords I use for moderately [in]secure web sites bear no relation to the ones I use for secure stuff) -- Chris Green

Hello Lugs, I've recently re-installed everything on my home server and now can't connect with Grsync* from my wife's (18.x Mint KDE) PC. Mine (Mint 19.1 Cinnamon) works fine with essentially the same command (different source and destinations). On mine a dialog box pops up asking for the password for the destination. On hers it doesn't it just fails and the error message says it can't make a directory (which it can't without the password). So how do I make it ask for a password? She is a 'user' on the destination device and I did chmod 0777 on her /home/username/Backup directory so it should be available. *GUI for Rsync. I have just received: Warning: the ECDSA host key for '...' differs from the key for the IP address '...' .. when trying to SSH to a web server I manage. I expect these kind of warnings if I've changed IPs, or reinstalled SSH, or reinstalled the OS, but I'm not aware of having done anything that could provoke this warning. Googling just gives me endless ways to fix the problem by removing the cached key, but I'm finding precious little advice on what to do if the warning has no obvious cause. I'm sure this is trivial but I don't know where to look... My wife's PC uses Grsync (gui for rsync) to backup to my server. I've recently put a new HDD in the server and re-installed everything, including a new SSL cert via Certbot. Now her Grsync refuses to connect because the certificate has changed. I guess sudo apt purge grsync then re-install it would do it but is there a more elegant method? Question about PCIExpress slots and SSDs

I have a Fujitsu Esprimo P910 system to which I am thinking of adding a bigger SSD. It already has a 128Gb SSD for the OS but that is just an 'ordinary' 2.5" SATA one that I simply connected to a SATA interface and thus it runs at maximum 600MB/s. The motherboard has unused PCIExpress slots as follows:- PCI-Express 3.0 x16 1 x (312 mm / 12.29 inch) Full height PCI-Express 2.0 x4 (mech. x16) 1 x (312 mm / 12.29 inch) Full height PCI-Express x1 1 x (312 mm / 12.29 inch) Full height PCI (32-bit / 33 MHz) 1 x (170 mm / 6.7 inch) Full height Now I know I need an adapter to plug a 'PCIExpress' NVME SSD into one of these slots but they're not all that expensive, e.g.:- https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adwits-Express-PCIe-based-Adapter-Factor-PCIe-x16-… So, if I get something like the above (alternative recommendations welcome) will I be able to get a fast[er] NVMe SSD and have it "just work" or are there BIOS and OS ramifications? Looking for new[ish] desktop machine as my main machine

I'm thinking that I ought to replace my current desktop machine with something a bit faster and (maybe) less power consuming. My current desktop is a Fujitsu Esprimo P910 with a small (128Gb) SSD and several spinning hard disks. This machine stays on all the time as it's my mail server that I ssh into to read my mail whci it receives using SMTP. So I'd like to get something at least as economical (power wise), the P910 which idles at about 22 to 24 watts So requirements for new machine are:- Idle power consumption less than 20 watts or so I5 to I7 sort of performance, 6th/7th generation? Larger SSD, e.g. 512Mb, though 240Gb would probably be enough. Prefer wholly Intel hardware/chipset, especially the graphics, to be sure it works well for Linux. Space for several hard disk drives, so a laptop isn't going to work, and anyway I want a big screen (currently 24"). Any ideas and suggestions? -- Chris Green

Hibernate Thinkpad

Howdy I brought a 2nd hand Thinkpad T430 & I've tweaked it so that Hibernate appears on the shutdown menu. In a command prompt, the command sudo pm-hibernate writes to disk and shuts down. Switching on brings the machine back to the state it was in on shutdown. Launching Hibernate from the startup menu, or from a command prompt typing sudo systemctl hibernate both write to the disk and shutdown, but on boot up, they start a fresh session, as if starting up from scratch. Anyone got any ideas how to successfully hibernate from the shutdown menu? Steve

Anyway, show us that line (and a few lines aroun d it for context) and I'm sure someone will be able to tell you what's wrong. There may be more/better information about the apache configuration error in the apache error log at /var/log/apache/error.log. Hi, I have an old PC out in the shed running (L)Ubuntu that I use as a Nextcloud server (also Cherry Music and wife's backup, but it's Nextcloud that is vexing me). A few days ago my phone flashed a 'can't connect' warning from the calendar sync, so obviously I ignored it for a while. Then I tried connecting from my desktop Nextcloud client, and that failed too. I did some basic diagnostics and found: 1. Nextcloud is running, I can log in fine from the desktop using the LAN IP address of the server. 2. I use DDNS to route WAN connections and that's working fine because when I try to use Firefox to access the server I get a 401 error from Nginx. (What I should get is a Nextcloud login screen). 3. That's odd because as far as I was aware the server ran Apache. 4. Issuing status commands to Apache or Nginx doesn't get me anywhere. 5. sudo apt install apache2 reveals that I already have the latest. 6. sudo apt install nginx gives me a list of packages to install (I didn't) so I assume that means I was right about having Apache not Nginx. But that doesn't explain the Nginx 401. 7. sudo ps ux doesn't show Apache running. 8. Trying to start Apache doesn't work: phil@webserver:/$ sudo service apache2 start Job for apache2.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status apache2.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details. That would be fine if I had any clue where to look for those log files. And was likely to understand what they say. So what I need (I think) is an idiot's guide to getting Apache running again that's easier than re-installing everything from scratch. Where have all the files gone?

I use Mint and having upgraded a small file yesterday (of course I recall what, d'oh) I have lost some files and folders on my desktop, though the right boxes are checked to show them. They haven't reappeared so far. How do I get them back? I'm not sure how to find out exactly which version of Mint I'm using. Tessa, certainly. Bev.

Seedbox vs VPS for linux VPS usage.

I have a home server that's now a few years old, used for a mix of large file backups (16tb raid10), file serving and sharing (nextcloud/sftp) and a few other less important applications for personal use like rss reader, music streaming etc. I'm thinking of decommissioning it soon and moving most of its use to the cloud. Unfortunately cloud storage is still very expensive when handling audio/video files so I'm planning on creating backups locally and leaving the cloud storage (around 1-2tb) for mainly file sharing as well as my other various applications. I've already got 2 vps with digitalocean and am pretty happy with them, except for the storage price (astronomical if I wanted to add 1000GB storage to the droplets), so I've been hunting around for reliable and affordable servers that are also secure. This got me to looking at 'dedicated' seedboxes as an alternative to regular VPS. The prices for storage are staggeringly smaller. When including full root access, these start to sound very much like a traditional VPS, so I'm now wondering: 1) What's the real difference if most VPS machines out there are not truly dedicated machines- (really virtualised) but have everything you'd expect from root-access to dedicated ip address, ram and cpu usage, the same as a good seedbox? (example here of a seedbox with root access and 'machine' specs: https://www.rapidseedbox.com/#pricing) 2) Are there any inherent security downsides with a seedbox vs a traditional vps? My initial feelings are it's the same, as long as you personally secure the server thoroughly and the level of control (say root access, firewall, other typical linux security tweaks, file encryption done by myself on the server etc) 3) Seedboxes are mainly meant for fast torrenting (something I'm not interested in). So long-term reliability probably isn't their main concern when running the business, comparing it to a company offering VPS renting. Is this a fair assessment? Do seedboxes tend to be available in the long term, or is it more likely to cause me problems a couple of years along the line? (I'd obviously look for a company that's been out there for a while, but is it likely the servers reliability is not as good?) 4) Any thoughts of what else I could look into? Ideally in the 1-5tb storage range, but possibly less than £20 p/m. John

Securing a laptop

Be grateful for any ideas about this. I'm responsible for the laptop of a not very technical person. The laptop has all kinds of sensitive personal information on it, and the owner travels around the UK, it gets left in a suitcase in the luggage shelves at the entrance to train carriages, gets carried around in a luggage trolley on the underground and buses. So I have tried to find some way of securing it that is not too onerous. What I came up with is to have an encrypted partition, and to have the really critical files on an encrypted usb stick that is carried separately. Its running Linux Mint. There are shortcuts to the usb files on the desktop, but of course they only work when the usb stick is inserted and mounted. This works, and I think its pretty secure, but it does involve the user in keying in long secure passwords several times. So recently I came on instructions in anonguide. These are meant for installing whonix. But the first part of them seems to be adaptable to my case. What you basically do is install Debian on an encrypted hard drive, putting the /boot folder on a USB stick. You set it up with a passphrase, and then after the installation is complete, you make an encrypted keyfile, move it to the stick, and delete the passphrase. The idea is that the machine will only boot using the stick (I suppose you clone it, to be safe) and will use the very long and secure keyfile to decrypt. I am not clear why you need to create a passphrase at all if its going to be deleted. And another oddity is that there seems to be only a root and swap partition. I am of course used to having a separate /home partition like everyone. But I can find my way through these things. The rest of the long anonguide manual goes on to talk about installing whonix and tor which isn't part of my problem. My user is not bothered about anonymity, just wants not to have to worry about having a machine stolen which is fairly readily accessible with all kinds of personal info on it. The potentially nice thing about this method is that you just insert the stick and boot and log in. No more messing with repeatedly typing in long and hard to remember passphrases. What do you all think about it? Have you tried this? And how do you secure laptops? Al

Any ideas how to provide a WiFi connection that goes via a proxy?

I'll try and explain what I need. I want to connect a WiFi device (a Kobo eReader) via a proxy server so that it will appear to be in the UK even when I'm on my boat in France. This is because downloads of books from the library will only work when the Kobo eReader is in the UK. I'm not trying to cheat or anything, I just want to be able to check out new library books to read when I'm away from home. The Kobo only has WiFi, no wired connection, so it needs some sort of WiFi source to connect to which will (presumably) in turn be connected to a UK based proxy server. I can provide the proxy server myself, I often do this for browser connections to order my repeat prescriptions (for some reason my doctor's web site won't allow connections from outside the UK). So, I guess, I need something like a wireless router which can be set up to route *all* WiFi clients via my UK proxy. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? (I don't really know what ports/protocols the Kobo uses though I suppose I could find out) Any/all ideas welcome. -- Chris Green
