All-in-one Printer/Scanner/Copiers

As the price of these things seem to be dropping lately I've been googling round seeing how compatible they are with GNU/Linux. The Linux Printers site (http://www.linuxprinting.org/) seems to favour Epson (although HP gets favourable mentions). Anyone on the list use one of these devices with Linux? Christmas meal?
by Jonathan McDowell 13 Dec '04

13 Dec '04

As Mark has pointed out, we're a bit short of meetings - the regular 2nd Thursday meet in Norwich seems to be the only regular event. So, does anyone fancy a Christmas meal? I'm in Norwich, but am happy to travel and would consider driving (and thus being able to give a few lifts) if we could find a location that would help enable more people to come. Next meeting? and Christmas meal
by Kirsten Naylor 11 Dec '04

11 Dec '04

Looking at http://www.alug.org.uk/meetings/2004/, we seem to be without a single future meeting. We will be due for a City Gate meeting on Thursday 13th January (2nd Thursday of the month). This is not on any web page yet, however it is very close to one of our planned dates for our Christmas meal. Does this make Fri 14th January less appealing for a Christmas meal date? We should probably think ahead to having a kit meeting, sometime at the end of January perhaps. Any ideas? (None here, but I haven't thought about it as such.) /Kirsten

If you can remember Dan Computers ...
by Ted.Harding＠nessie.mcc.ac.uk 10 Dec '04

10 Dec '04

Hi Folks, I wonder if anyone with a long memory can help me out. I want to have a look at a neighbour's PC which has been giving a bit of trouble, and need to take the cover off the case to get inside (especially to clean out dust, dead insects and cobwebs... ). Superficially looks like a standard desktop box. However, it was made by Dan Technology in 1995 ... I can't see how to take the cover off the case: on the surface it looks as though you can slide the overall cover off backwards, *provided* you can work out which screws you need to remove in order to free it. It's the question of "which screws" that's vexing me. The cover itself has no screws obviously associated with holding it in place. There's what looks like a back-plate with a total of 15 screws in it, some of which may simply be fixing screws and some of which seem to be associated with mounting internal bits like fans, port sockets, etc. Maybe the solution is to remove all these, take off the backplate, and then see how to get at removing the cover. But the last thing I want to do is remove screws blindly and cause unwanted consequences! I've never seen a case quite like it. If anyone can remember opening up a Dan box like this and can advise on how to proceed I'd be very grateful. Thanks, and best wishes to all, Ted. -------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: (Ted Harding) <Ted.Harding(a)nessie.mcc.ac.uk> Fax-to-email: +44 (0)870 094 0861 [NB: New number!] Date: 10-Dec-04 Time: 11:40:24 ------------------------------ XFMail ------------------------------

Wireless AP selection?
by Dennis Dryden 08 Dec '04

08 Dec '04

This seems like it should be a really simple question but ive had a quick look at iwconfig and iwprivIf but i still cant work out the answer. If there is more then one wireless ap in the area how can i select between them? This is something thats quite simple in windows(as i saw when i gave my girlfriend a wireless card that doesn't work with Linux) and was hoping for just a command line tool or command but so far I've been out of luck :-(. As a side question does anyone know where i might be able to find some parts for an old dell laptop(Latitude CPi D266XT)? I've got 4 GMail accounts going free to good homes if anyone wants one? Thanks, Dennis Dryden

Printing a book
by Ian Douglas 05 Dec '04

05 Dec '04

Hi Folks, I have been asked by a friend to print a book of his for Christmas. The book will have 40 A5 size pages. I have created a text file from his had-written manuscript and now want to print about 5 copies to pass to friends for proof reading and suggestions. My problem is that I would like to find a Linux Desk Top Publishing (or Word Processing) program into which I can import the text file and print it out on landscape orientation A4 sheets with the first sheet automatically having A5 page 40 on it's left half and A5 page 1 on it's right half, the second sheet having page 2 on it's left half and page 39 on it's right, the third sheet having page 38 on it's left and page 3 on it's right etc (those of you who have printed booklets will hopefully know the problem I am trying to explain)... Have any ALUG members had any experience of printing books like this, and if so what DTP package did you use? Ian.

Linux: Watching satellite TV when from home via DSL on the laptop (fwd)
by MJ Ray 04 Dec '04

04 Dec '04

I know a couple of ALUGgers have DVB cards now, so I'm forwarding the following from alt.tv.satellite.europe - I assume this will work for cable connections and both satellite and DTT. I'd love to hear of success stories and maybe a demo if we're ever somewhere with fast enough internet access. Might have potential for home distribution too, if you're not in the room with your MythTV system. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: 2004-12-03 19:01:16 +0000 From: Jan Panteltje <pNaonStpealmtje(a)yahoo.com> Subject: Linux: Watching satellite TV when from home via DSL on the laptop If you have a DVB card, a fast DSL connection, and run Linux, then it is possible to watch on a remote PC. For example you are far away for your work, and want to watch some TV station live (maybe game or anything). This is possible, with reasonable quality, I have put some scripts and an explanation on my site http://panteltje.com/panteltje/dvd/ just below the penguin picture. Basically the system (in real time) converts mpeg2 to mpeg4, reduces bitrate, and sends the compressed stream as TCP packets to where ever you are. It is a one to one secure link, with full control from you. Experiment, this was just the result of a few hours tinkering. RE: [ALUG] Ubuntu
by Keith Watson 04 Dec '04

I've installed it twice on my spare box, from the CDs I picked up on Sunday, using various combinations of other OSs and it's loaded perfectly and set up a working multi-boot configuration each time. I like the fact that it gives the option of using grub. A colleague tried to install it on his WinXP laptop and it loaded perfectly and ran ok but WinXP objected. But we now think that was a grub + hardware issue and nothing to do with ubuntu. Disclaimer, I was a compositor/Graphic Designer in the days when we used to set lead type by hand, the printers were that long established we had five cases of swastika border, which for some reason didn't seem to be as popular as it was in 1920's when they bought it. As I understand it you want to print an 80 page (A5) book using 40 sheets of (A4) the formula for working out which sheets go together is each pair must add up to 1 more than the number of pages, 1-40 2-39 and so on and always an odd with an even alternating, middle pages will be 20-21. Also bear in mind that 1and 40 will need more space in the gutter, (the margin between the pages) = twice the margin at the outside edges plus an allowance for the fact that there will be 38 other sheets of paper between them, in my day that would have been about one > one and half leads. (Don't take this as gospel, I joined the Fire Service in 1974 and my memory is not what it was). I've still got my type scale some where if you need it, but, a lead was 3 points and a point was approximately one seventy-second of an inch, but not exactly one seventy-second. but I would have thought if you add half a mm to the gutter for every eight or so pages working out from the middle it will end up looking right. Of course Scribus or something similar may do that automatically for you. -- John Seago Linux User #219566 (http://counter.li.org) AFFS http://www.affs.org.uk/
