USB camera problem
by Graham 28 Jun '04

28 Jun '04

I have two SuSE 9.1 setups; one on a desktop and the other a laptop. The laptop can see my Canon IXUS camera; the desktop can't, though it used to be able to last week on 9.0 before I installed the new version of the OS. USB printer is fine. Does anyone know how to debug this part of the system? -- GT

Re. SUSE NVIDIA driver install

Bryce Martin wrote: <snip> I hope you can help with a little problem I've got with my nvidia display driver. I used YOU to update my nvidia driver, but the next time I rebooted, the resolution had completely gone. I'm guessing that this means the driver is no longer properly loaded. I have looked into this a little bit and I think I need to boot into run level 3 or switch to it. How do I switch to run level 3? I then need to remove the nvidia driver with the command ("rmmod nvidia") and then somehow reload the driver. I know how to execute the rmmod nvidia command from a command line. Where is the nvidia driver installer kept on my system so I can run it? If you can answer these questions for me I would be most grateful. Kind regards, Bryce <snip> Hi Bryce, There is a linux nvidia installer called NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run that you need to run. If you don't have it or can't find it, then you can download it from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_1.0-5336.html . You will also find a link to A SUSE NVIDIA installer HOWTO document underneath the download link that explains what to do. I'm assuming that you aren't using a 64-bit processor. If you are, then go to http://www.nvidia.com and follow the relevant links. Whenever I've been in your current pedicament I've done the following - 1. Log on as root at the command line - enter su and then the root password when prompted 2. Change to runlevel 3 - enter init 3 3. Unload the nvidia module (it's never actually been loaded for me, but just in case) - enter rmmod nvidia <> 4. cd to directory that contains nvidia installer and enter sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run This will start the text-based install routine. Accept and say yes to all the questions. 5. Run Sax2 to configure your display - enter sax2 -m 0=nvidia (the 0 is a zero) Regards Chris

You don't have the option of pretty graphics on the menu but adding new kernel images is just a matter of editing a text file. I used to worry about the 1024 limit thing but when I went to grub I read something that suggested it shouldn't be a problem with newer PC hardware. So when I set up grub I deliberately went over the 1024 and it worked fine. Regards, Keith ____________ It's easier to go down the mountain than up, but the view is best from the top.

Remote Calendar
by Ben Francis 26 Jun '04

26 Jun '04

I'm looking for a way of keeping an up to date calendar on my Debian/Apache/PHP/MySQL web server which I can view and edit from Linux, Windows and Mac client machines over the Internet if possible. I quite like the idea of using the Mozilla Sunbird Calendar and setting up a WebDav server on Apache. Does anyone have experience of this? Google found me a tutorial here http://www.twilight-systems.com/flacco/mozcal/mozcal-webdav.html As a bonus, what I'd *really* like to be able to do is sync the calendar with the one in my mobile phone so I can access it when I'm on the move. This is the bit that may be difficult because I'm not sure how to go about it. The phone I'm talking about is a WAP and Java enabled Siemens SL45i and has a built in Calendar which can be synchronised with Outlook. I don't want to use Outlook for obvious reasons but perhaps someone knows of a Java app for phones which can sync with Calendar software on the PC or preferably the calendar stored on my WebDav server? However, I'd rather not have to use the WAP on the mobile phone too often because it's expensive on my tarriff so perhaps I could sync that locally with one of the client machines? I suppose a more ideal solution would be buying a Zaurus to give me more options, but I don't have that kind of money :) Any ideas? Or am I going to have to stick with my current dead wood device? :P -- Ben "tola" Francis http://hippygeek.co.uk ---------------------------------------------------- COMPUTER SUPPORT for small businesses and home users http://tolatech.co.uk ----------------------------------------------------

problem installing jbuilder on SuSE 9.1
by Bryce Martin 25 Jun '04

25 Jun '04

I get this output ./install_linux: line 930: file.lax: Read-only file system Can't load library "/media/cdrecorder/setup/jre/linux/lib/i386/libjava.so", because /media/cdrecorder/setup/jre/linux/lib/i386/libjava.so: symbol __libc_wait, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference Could not create the Java virtual machine. when running ./install_linux which is the installer script. The strange thing is that I successfully installed this thing on SuSE 9.0 without the slightest hitch. I don't understand why it doesn't work for 9.1 Can I do something about this? Also, I have installed the javaSDK on the system but this is probably irrelevant. Cheers for any help you may be able to give. Booting multiple Linux versions
by Chris Green 24 Jun '04

24 Jun '04

OK, so to wake up the list a bit, here's a nice simple question. I have a Slackware 9.1 system running and would like to install the (brand new!) Slackware 10.0 as well. The hard disk has a 30Gb partition with 9.1 on it and 30Gb spare on which I can install the new 10.0. So far so good. Installing the Slackware 10.0 should be fairly straightforward I think, I haven't had any big problems with previous versions. However I'm not quite sure how I get the boot menu to present me with the alternative versions. Can anyone give me any guidance. Will I have a problem because of the second (new, 10.0) version being beyond cylinder 1024 or whatever the limitation is? -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk)
