This is a Sixth Form College (16 plus students and some adults) We mostly teach this stuff to the BTEC students. I like the BTEC programmes. Verifying CDs

Hi. While thinking about making some free CDs to give out to people, it occurred to me that I'm suggesting people but CDRs of dubious provenance into their PCs and boot from them, which is probably not a good thing to be suggesting. I was wondering if there was any way people could verify their CD's md5sum against the 'official' one from the distro site. The two hurdles that immediately present themselves are: 1) I don't know how to get an md5sum from a CD once it's been burnt, or whether it would generate the same md5sum as the iso anyway and 2) The target users won't have a Gnu/Linux system with the relevant utilities on. Export Outlook contacts to LDAP

Hi, Bit of a long one this... pay attention at the back :-) I've got he address book in my phone now syncronised with Outlook, what I want to do now, is convert Outlook contacts into something usefull... LDAP! I really don't like using Outlook at the best of times. Does anyone know a way of converting Outlook exported data, .pst. .csv etc into an ldif file. Ultimately I want to run Openldap on my linux machine, import the data, and hopefully do something fancy with Asterisk PBX. I'm currently bidding for a Cisco 7960 which can use LDAP. Phew, after taking three weeks to learn how to install and set up cygwin the first time round I managed it in under an hour today - suspect I forgot something important. But have tested it internally and it works, just waiting for firewall guys to adjust port forwarding and then hey presto watch the world arrive on my NT4 laptop. Suspicions are that SSH is eating NT4 memory and I cant afford to reboot the current ssh hosting machine every day as it also runs our teletext inserter equipment/software. Ahhh! It's not just our NT server that's having a nervous breakdown then! (Well, ours is having a little more of a strop than it really should be... it *CAN'T* see the outside world *except* through a local proxy, but there's no reason that it shouldn't be able to that we can see... It randomly decides to put all web sites in the stop state when ever it feels like it, *and* it won't install a critical update :/) Very very glad that my side of work is mostly on our nux boxen, much *much* easier to cope with :) Cheers, -- Brett Parker

Took me about three weeks and the added patience of a saint in respect of help from an IT guy who does our web site stuff for us. In itself it proves to be pretty stable but the NT machine it is running on is in the process of a nervous breakdown. We run a Pervasive database tool on that machine as well as standard FTP server .. Console switching stopped working - update (No replies anyway :-(

Original message =============================================================================== I have just upgraded my Debian Sarge/Testing system which included a number of X related packages and console switching (Ctrl-Alt-Fn) has stopped working when running X. Even Ctrl-Alt-Backspace won't drop me back to the command line even though X was started using '/etc/init.d/kdm start' from the command line on console 1 which is what I have always done. It just restarts X/kdm. ============================================================================== I have traced this to the /etc/X11/xkb/rules files. Reverting to the old one has cured the problem. I have tried comparing both files but they appear to be so different as to make this impossible for me! Could someone, with appropriate knowledge, have a look at the new file and see if they can point to the bit that stops console switching from working? Dumpster Diving for hardware

One of my favorite pastimes when i was living in the US was stopping at piles of junk by the side of the road and picking up other peoples cast off equipment for free. Many a systems has been picked up dusted off, given a new life by tux and sold on at a profit. Since i moved backto the Yarmouth though the pickings have been decidely slim. Anyone know anywhere in the region where equipment is reguarly dumped? Any stories of great finds?
