Any ssh experts around?

I'm trying to set up an ssh connection to a remote system where I have a shell login account and I can't get it to do RSA (or DSA) authentication and not askk me for a password. I have a number of other logins where the passwordless login works fine. For some reason I can't solve a problem I have with Kmail on my laptop which gives the following error every time I try to mail or reply someone. The server did not accept the sender address. The server responded: "Invalid extension (Martin) " The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder. Note: Other messages will also be blocked by this message, as long as it is in the 'outbox' folder The following transport protocol was used: ntlworld Can you help me resolve this problem? Firebird -> Firefox

I'm sure a lot of people already know about this, I may even have missed it being discussed already. Mozilla's stand alone browser, Firebird has recently been renamed... again. The name change is because of a clash with the open source database project of the same name and hopefully we'll get to stick with this one. Mozilla Firefox as it is now known is my browser of choice in both Windows and GNU/Linux so I just thought I'd make sure people were up to date with the latest news. Hi , I want to setuop a VPN but I don't know how to do this: So we have: mikes PCs on internal network --> mike's main pc --> second network card --> cable modem --> internet --> my ADSL modem --> my linux firewall. My modem has an external address but uses NAT to convert to internal address before arriving at my linux firewall. I can set up port forwarding. some ideas ? Cheers Vasko

SpamAssassin False Positives

Morning ALUGers! I've got an interesting one with false positives in SpamAssassin and I'm hoping someone here might have used or even had the same problem. I have a client who runs a precision instrument business for the scientific industry. They have a number of clients out in Japan and legitimate e-mails from them are being flagged as spam. Our default score for spam is 4 and these messages are coming in ranked at 4.495, hence they are being flagged as spam. I'd be happy to change the setting to mark all messages with a score higher than 5 as spam for this client, but that wouldn't stop a small number of spam messages (10) I've received today alone in my own Inbox. We have identified some phrases we believe might be causing the high ranking but I don't actually know how to train SA that these phrases are ok and shouldn't be marked as spam. Apart from increasing (or is it decreasing) the spam ranking for the clients domain to 5, I can't see a way around this. Any suggestions? KL Meeting Postponed

There will be no King's Lynn meeting this week, unless someone steps forward pronto to take it over. The planned speakers haven't time. Next month's King's Lynn meeting will be cancelled, unless someone tells me they can take it over. Backing Up and Restoring a Debian System

At the end of this next bit of inane rambling is a question. The inane rambling is there to try and put the question into some sort of context. <inane> By a somewhat circuitous route I've lately been thinking about the best ways to back up and restore my Debian based GNU/Linux system. It was prompted by a number of things one of which was showing someone at work how easy it was to set up a Debian system using Knoppix. I must admit even I was a bit impressed by how easy it was to boot from the CD, run the install to HD script, tweak the sources file, and then apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. Took about an hour to do the lot (including re-arranging the partitions of the existing disk so we could dual boot with Windows*). That included installing GRUB as a boot manager. But it got me thinking about how easy it would be to use Knoppix as a recovery tool if I should need to do a re-install from scratch. And that got me wondering about how I could get from the Knoppix configuration back to my preferred configuration. At the moment I just dump of whole chunks of various partitions using some pre-written backup scripts I got from somewhere (probably just Googled around the web and picked them up from there). But I've always thought that it was a bit of a sledgehammer approach and the there must be a more elegant way of doing this. There is some useful info about back-ups on the Linux documentation Project site (www.tldp.org); Linux Complete Backup and Recovery HOWTO, Ch.8 of Linux Administration Made Easy - Backup and Restore Procedures and Ch.12 of The Linux System Administrator's Guide - Backups. All together these give some pointers to which bits of the system you need to back up. </inane> <question> So say I have just done a complete re-install from Knoppix, and also recovered all the important config files into /etc (e.g. fstab, passwrd, XF86Config, etc). Could I then get enough info from the backed up apt config files to feed into apt and have it install any missing packages, remove any unwanted packages and update any out of date packages (and possibly downdate (is there such a word?) anything too recent)? Is this information something I'd need to generate via apt when I do my back-ups? </question> I you can do this there are some interesting possibilities, like taking regular snapshots of your setup and being able to roll-back to the earlier configurations. Has any one tried this? I've had a look with Google and can't find anything similar but it's entirely possible that I was using inappropriate search words. Regards, Keith * OK so I used PartitionMagic and not Parted but I couldn't find Parted on the Knoppix disk and we had a PM bootable CD to hand. But I've used Parted before and it worked just as well.

Meeting on the 12th Feb, Norwich

The new choice of venue - The City Gate, Dereham Road - was a great success and many thanks to Brett and Bryce for suggesting it. It has all the benefits of the Forum as well as a few more, which is pretty good going really. More comfortable, better beers and a good selection of food too. Although it is a large pub - a positive - it does not have the emptiness of the Forum which with its cavernous space feels almost like an airport or train station. There's even (unofficial) free parking next door. Kirsten, Adam, Jonathan, Bryce, Brett, Paul C., Ian, Graham and myself - not a bad turn out and chatter included the usual wide range of topics from programming environments to problems with playing DVDs to fine wine tasting. Xandros <> GPL

Does anybody know anything about Xandros, I am looking into it on request but I found this in the FAQ Will the desktop be based on KDE or GNOME? Xandros Desktop uses a Xandros enhanced version of KDE. My question is have they actually modified KDE itself, or just reconfigured it and perhaps completely replaced some of the KDE applications. I can't find mention of the source being available anywhere so I am hoping the latter.

Is it possible to save a pointer to a mail message on a Web page

Is there any simple way to have a web page with all the usual sorts of links etc. plus some links which point to mail messages? I want to collect together some E-Mail correspondence, some links to web sites and some pictures (and/or URLs of pictures). The meeting will be in the 'City Gate' pub which is on Dereham road, just off the inner ring road at the junction of Grapes Hill and Barn Road. Dereham Road is the A1074 - take the Costessey junction on the A47 if coming from west of Norwich. Groupware for the home

Hi everyone, My Wife and I both have seperate user accounts as she doesn't like me playing around with things and likes the fact that everytime she logs in it still looks the same!! Trouble is we only have one e-mail account and kmail is set-up the same for both log-ins. This has the annoying effect of received e-mails being split between the two log-ins. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a light-weight groupware package that would stop this? Or, we do have a partition "/shared" where we save common documents and I was wondering if I just copied the contents of the "mail" folders to a mail folder on this shared partition and then sym-linked to this from both home directories? Assuming read/write/group permissions were set up properly, would this work or would it thoroughly break my kmail set-up? Cheers. Martin

how is linux doing in anglia ?

(Sorry couldn't find a better subject for this mail.) Hello, I'm french, 22, studying computer science in an engineering school in France. I might have to move to Norwich in a not too far future (ok, I'm not a real geek since I have a girlfriend in Norwich and we haven't even met on the internet). My problem is I can't really imagine life without a GNU/Linux box close to me, so I was wondering what the status of GNU/Linux is in East Anglia. So, some questions : Is it possible to find linux-related jobs in east anglia, or is it a london-specific thing ? :) Is linux used in the CS department of UEA, or are there windows boxes everywhere ? what are the other universities in anglia with CS departments providing courses in networking and operating systems ? Are there companies in Anglia who work specifically with Free Software, providing services or developing software for other companies ? Thank a lot for having read me until the end ! Lucas

Hi, Does anybody know how to stop SuSE 9 from writing data to the hard disk of my laptop so very often. Basically, if you have done this already yourself, and are quite familiar with the set of things that need to be done and how to do them, please get in touch with me. I have changed a couple of settings that helped (I'm not usre if these changes were durable from one session to the next) that helped but I can't remember what I changed, so I probably need to re-visit this topic myself and post some more useful info to help with this query. I think I changed the percentage of a buffer that could be used up before it had to be written to disk, and another thing or two also, but I can't remember more now. realplayer 8.0.3.465-10 and bbc video files

Just noticed - you are typing the first letter as 'i' (I) - that should be 'l' (L) Regards Syd Thanks Syd, I had no idea the command was ldconfig. I got the command to run, but it didn't solve my problem. I'm using realplayer 8.0.3.465-10 that came with the SuSE 9 discs. I have uninstalled and installed again using yast, but unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem either. I always use the bbc world http://news.bbc.co.uk/default.stm website to play audio and video links because in the past they have always worked properly. Now, the video links don't play. The message is that the AV console is not yet supported for my system. This is strange because only two weeks ago I was playing video files of Prof Collin Pillinger about Beagle 2 that lasted for an hour, and Tony Blair's interview with Frost (also an hour long). The audio links still work though. Could it be that the bbc site has upgraded and my player is no longer supported? Can you play the files? -- Regards, Bryce.
