I've also just checked and it won't boot from discs which I know are bootable. So perhaps it is a hardware problem. Still, any ideas would be welcome! Richard

Dear ALUG, My DVD/CD-RW combined drive on my laptop has stopped working! I'm using Mandrake 9.1 (and Windows XP sometimes) on a PIII laptop system. Neither operating system will recognise the drive at all. The hardware itself is unlikely to be faulty as it makes all the usual noises and flashes when you put a disc in it. The sym link /dev/cdrom is missing as are the devices /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 (though the directory /dev/cdroms still exists) and /dev/scd0. (I also tried running cdrecord --scanbus out of interest and this reported that there were no suitable devices). The problem first occured when I went to put a CD in the drive and, as it opened, the machine just re-booted itself. I decided not to let it do an integrity check (Mandrake runs fsck) and it booted normally until init informed me that it had found a new device: /dev/scd0 and asked me if I wanted to run config tools for it, OK I said. It finished booting but it had made no difference. If anyone has any ideas then please let me know. Thanks very much, Richard

To All, I have been looking about a bit on the web and trying to read up on IDE Hardware raid cards for Linux. I am trying to build a small server for my website. I would really like hardware raid RAID 1 (mirroring) as software raid will be difficult to setup on the slackware install I am trying to do! Does any one know of a cheap IDE Raid card that is supported by linux? TIA. Regards, Michael

Can anyone tell me how I can get a boot.b file for Lilo? I'm running Debian Testing and there is no boot.b file in my /boot directory. I also have another machine running Debian Testing and that has no boot.b file either. The Lilo package doesn't contain a boot.b file and running Lilo doesn't create one. The Lilo documentation doesn't explain where it comes from. I'm trying to re-create some Mindi emergency boot discs and that appears to require this file. Just been lurking for a while as we have been mega busy at work coping with the aftershocks from a major product release. However I have been following the discussions :o) Just a quick note to say that I haven't forgotten a whole list of things I put my name to, e.g. - T-Shirts/Sweatshirts - Contacting someone at The Forum about use of exhibition/demo spaces - Taking ownership of the graphics web page - Distro survey page - Name badges I'm off on my hols for the next couple of weeks but I will start addressing these once I get back.. promise... honest! Will definitely be there on the 28th in the audience only, sorry my knowledge is far too scanty to try and BS anyone else on this list! As I live round the corner it's not likely that I can offer any lifts but I'm happy to ferry people back and forth from the train station or bus stops. Just e-mail me off list if I can help in any way. And following on from the discussion about meetings, my general view is that I will try and get along to any meeting I can where my time isn't preempted by other commitments. So the point about what's a reasonable distance really breaks down into how long it takes to travel there and back. My gut feel is that anything over an hour is probably too long. But then if it's something like a Debian install and config. workshop.... Hasta Lavista! Keith

Student course calculator( with all needed visual elements) 2. Student allaying online form with automatically database insertion in MySQL and possibilities to connect with MSSQL 3. Automatic invoice generation 4. Automatic e-mail notification to the student ( agent if it have) and the school staff --private part --- (accusable only from the intranet) 1. Login/authorization page 2. Automatic generation and printing of the Registration letters (Enrolment, Welcome, Receipt/for the payments made/, ..... etc) If the group who plane to develop the school tools is happy to base the new stuff on this system I can arrange to make the current available modules full open source The technologies used for this system are : Apache, Tomcat (or JServ), MySQL, IBM JDK (or any other jdk), (and jtds if you need connection to MSSQL) - the system is fully build in java servlets The system is tested for around 6 month in the real situation and any bugs are fixed. This is very late, but at least it's here now. On 21 August, a small and hardy band of ALUGgers started a new chapter in the group's history with the first meeting in Ely. Daniel, Rob, MJR, Kirsty, Adam and Steven (or, if you prefer, Kinnison, rjek(?), slef, wildduck, quinophex and, erm, Steven) met up at the Cutter on Ely's waterside, chatted, scoped out the place, ate, drank and were merry, then walked up the hill to the Fountain, chatted, drank and were merry (who needs food?). Then I had to run back for a train so I'd be up in time for work the following morning (and maybe someone can tell me if I missed anything worth posting). I enjoyed it and (as predicted) preferred the Fountain to the Cutter for bber. So, I suggest we meet up again and maybe gather more adherants. When's good for others? Evening of the 17th or afternoon of the 20th? Can someone else try their luck at getting info on the old dispensory as a meeting venue for late-ish October, please? This has happened only since I changed inetd for xinetd and lsof -i :600 gives me: xinetd 16112 root 6u IPv4 318948149 UDP *:600 which I understand means that xinetd is using port 600. AFAIK, in windows there is a separate root directory for each disk so when windows tries to resolve a path which refers back to the root directory but doesn't specify a drive letter it will assume the current drive. So, for example, if your CD drive was E: /fred/somepage.htm would resolve to E:/fred/somepage.htm Of course, Unix-like OSes are different and have a single root directory so this doesn't work. You could work round this by creating symbolic links in the real root directory for each top-level directory on the CD. You could so this automatically like: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "ln -s /mnt/cdrom/" $8 " /" $8;}' | sh When you've finished browsing the CD you can remove the links: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "rm -f /" $8;}' | sh This is a little ugly but it's all I can think of ATM. [Alug]Browsing files on CD

Please could someone shed some light on this: I received a CD-rom from the USA this morning, which contains a load of directories, in each of which is a selection of HTML files and related .JPG and .GIF images. There is also a front page .HTML file in the root directory and that file has links to all of the other pages scattered about the CD. I can start up Opera/Mozilla and open the front page without any difficulty, but all links are unreachable. When I move the cursor over a link, I find that its address is shown as (for example) 'file:///fred/somepage.htm', whereas I would have expected it to be '/mnt/cdrom/fred/somepage.htm'.... On the CD jewel case it says that the CD is for Doze and that 'other browsers may not work properly'. Is there a solution to this? It seems as though all the files are separately accessible - I can open any .HTM file manually in Opera, but the links don't work. Thanks for any help! Gerald.
