Hi, I need to make a wireless connection in 7 miles distance but between the two point it is a hill ? can some one help me with suggestion about what type of wireless bridge to use ( brand etc ?) or if this is possible ? Cheers Vasko

Just been lurking for a while as we have been mega busy at work coping with the aftershocks from a major product release. However I have been following the discussions :o) Just a quick note to say that I haven't forgotten a whole list of things I put my name to, e.g. - T-Shirts/Sweatshirts - Contacting someone at The Forum about use of exhibition/demo spaces - Taking ownership of the graphics web page - Distro survey page - Name badges I'm off on my hols for the next couple of weeks but I will start addressing these once I get back.. promise... honest! Will definitely be there on the 28th in the audience only, sorry my knowledge is far too scanty to try and BS anyone else on this list! As I live round the corner it's not likely that I can offer any lifts but I'm happy to ferry people back and forth from the train station or bus stops. Just e-mail me off list if I can help in any way. And following on from the discussion about meetings, my general view is that I will try and get along to any meeting I can where my time isn't preempted by other commitments. So the point about what's a reasonable distance really breaks down into how long it takes to travel there and back. My gut feel is that anything over an hour is probably too long. But then if it's something like a Debian install and config. workshop.... Hasta Lavista! Keith

Hi all, If the development of the school tools in not started yet.. Please take a look on http://www.avalonschools.com/servlet/avaloncalc This is a fully featured student course calculator and management system written in full from me... the current version have: -- public part ---------- 1. Student course calculator( with all needed visual elements) 2. Student allaying online form with automatically database insertion in MySQL and possibilities to connect with MSSQL 3. Automatic invoice generation 4. Automatic e-mail notification to the student ( agent if it have) and the school staff --private part --- (accusable only from the intranet) 1. Login/authorization page 2. Automatic generation and printing of the Registration letters (Enrolment, Welcome, Receipt/for the payments made/, ..... etc) If the group who plane to develop the school tools is happy to base the new stuff on this system I can arrange to make the current available modules full open source The technologies used for this system are : Apache, Tomcat (or JServ), MySQL, IBM JDK (or any other jdk), (and jtds if you need connection to MSSQL) - the system is fully build in java servlets The system is tested for around 6 month in the real situation and any bugs are fixed. I think the point of that was that they offer a rebate for low usage - possibly it came down to £10 a month if you didn't want gigabytes of transfer per week. [Alug]Ely: Let's do it again

This is very late, but at least it's here now. On 21 August, a small and hardy band of ALUGgers started a new chapter in the group's history with the first meeting in Ely. Daniel, Rob, MJR, Kirsty, Adam and Steven (or, if you prefer, Kinnison, rjek(?), slef, wildduck, quinophex and, erm, Steven) met up at the Cutter on Ely's waterside, chatted, scoped out the place, ate, drank and were merry, then walked up the hill to the Fountain, chatted, drank and were merry (who needs food?). Then I had to run back for a train so I'd be up in time for work the following morning (and maybe someone can tell me if I missed anything worth posting). I enjoyed it and (as predicted) preferred the Fountain to the Cutter for bber. So, I suggest we meet up again and maybe gather more adherants. When's good for others? Evening of the 17th or afternoon of the 20th? Can someone else try their luck at getting info on the old dispensory as a meeting venue for late-ish October, please? This has happened only since I changed inetd for xinetd and lsof -i :600 gives me: xinetd 16112 root 6u IPv4 318948149 UDP *:600 which I understand means that xinetd is using port 600. AFAIK, in windows there is a separate root directory for each disk so when windows tries to resolve a path which refers back to the root directory but doesn't specify a drive letter it will assume the current drive. So, for example, if your CD drive was E: /fred/somepage.htm would resolve to E:/fred/somepage.htm Of course, Unix-like OSes are different and have a single root directory so this doesn't work. You could work round this by creating symbolic links in the real root directory for each top-level directory on the CD. You could so this automatically like: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "ln -s /mnt/cdrom/" $8 " /" $8;}' | sh When you've finished browsing the CD you can remove the links: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "rm -f /" $8;}' | sh This is a little ugly but it's all I can think of ATM. [Alug]Browsing files on CD

Please could someone shed some light on this: I received a CD-rom from the USA this morning, which contains a load of directories, in each of which is a selection of HTML files and related .JPG and .GIF images. There is also a front page .HTML file in the root directory and that file has links to all of the other pages scattered about the CD. I can start up Opera/Mozilla and open the front page without any difficulty, but all links are unreachable. When I move the cursor over a link, I find that its address is shown as (for example) 'file:///fred/somepage.htm', whereas I would have expected it to be '/mnt/cdrom/fred/somepage.htm'.... On the CD jewel case it says that the CD is for Doze and that 'other browsers may not work properly'. Is there a solution to this? It seems as though all the files are separately accessible - I can open any .HTM file manually in Opera, but the links don't work. Thanks for any help! Gerald.

[Alug]"From Boot to Halt" talk, Norwich sunday 28th September.

At the last meeting it was suggested that we have the 'From Boot to Halt' talk at the next Norwich sunday meeting (2pm Sunday 28th September, Nelson Room, The Billy Bluelight, Hall road) MJR has offered to start it off: " I'm happy to give an overview/introduction talk (kernel startup, hand-off to init, types of init, runlevels, common tasks, that sort of thing) and present a poster on some aspect no-one else wants to do." It would be great if there are one or two other people who are willing to join in with information on other aspects of the boot process, especially anyone involved in development or doing any other "fun stuff with start-up and shutdown". An A3 or 2xA4 poster would be helpful too. Some useful and interesting topics would include ways to handle power management/UPS, particularly as more people move to using laptops. Something on APM/ACPI for example? Anyone who is interested, please respond either to the list or privately to either myself and/or Mark. In any event, the introductory talk on the boot process will take place at this meeting - further details and announcement to follow. Syd

Hi The Do Different Computer Show that was discussed on IRC has been cancelled. However as a replacement a Spectrum and SAM Coupé computer Show called ORSAM 2003 is to be held in Norwich. At the show I would like to have a computer (Linux?) with a webcam and irc server running so that people in North America and others who could not turn up could take part in the show. Maybe a Spectrum or SAM could be connected to it take part in the IRC chat. I could provided a broadband connect only a few metres from the venue, a webcam, a computer and a spectrum. What I do not have is Wireless hardware, knowledge or much time on the day, though I will give what I can. All, I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150. I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al. I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB. Couple of questions! 1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow? I guess the ITX box needs to do the following! 1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that! err, I think thats it. Any how, let me know what you think. Regards, Michael

My local telephone exchange is becoming broadband enabled at the end of September and I am working on the assumption that I will be able to use it (BT's site says I MAY). I have a firewall running (Endoshield - very easy to set up) and have just changed it to Bastille which seems to be working (grc.com). Bastille recommends 'psad' which is also now installed. I had Snort and Samhain installed but do I need these? Do I need Packet Mangling enabled in the Kernel which it isn't at present?
