[Alug]Chkrootkit says Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 600)
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

This has happened only since I changed inetd for xinetd and lsof -i :600 gives me: xinetd 16112 root 6u IPv4 318948149 UDP *:600 which I understand means that xinetd is using port 600. So why should chkrootkit think the port's infected? Barry Samuels http://www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk The Unofficial Guide to Great Britain

I had the same situation and was told I couldn't recieve it but I've now got connected with the Extended Reach trial that BT are doing. Basically if you are just too far for ADSL then you may be able to get connected with the Extended Reach trial (using normal ADSL equipment). AFAIK, in windows there is a separate root directory for each disk so when windows tries to resolve a path which refers back to the root directory but doesn't specify a drive letter it will assume the current drive. So, for example, if your CD drive was E: /fred/somepage.htm would resolve to E:/fred/somepage.htm Of course, Unix-like OSes are different and have a single root directory so this doesn't work. You could work round this by creating symbolic links in the real root directory for each top-level directory on the CD. You could so this automatically like: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "ln -s /mnt/cdrom/" $8 " /" $8;}' | sh When you've finished browsing the CD you can remove the links: cd /mnt/cdrom ls -l | grep ^d | awk '{print "rm -f /" $8;}' | sh This is a little ugly but it's all I can think of ATM. [Alug]Browsing files on CD
by Edenyard 03 Sep '03

03 Sep '03

Please could someone shed some light on this: I received a CD-rom from the USA this morning, which contains a load of directories, in each of which is a selection of HTML files and related .JPG and .GIF images. There is also a front page .HTML file in the root directory and that file has links to all of the other pages scattered about the CD. I can start up Opera/Mozilla and open the front page without any difficulty, but all links are unreachable. When I move the cursor over a link, I find that its address is shown as (for example) 'file:///fred/somepage.htm', whereas I would have expected it to be '/mnt/cdrom/fred/somepage.htm'.... On the CD jewel case it says that the CD is for Doze and that 'other browsers may not work properly'. Is there a solution to this? It seems as though all the files are separately accessible - I can open any .HTM file manually in Opera, but the links don't work. Thanks for any help! Gerald.

To quote the Anglia Linux User Group the free software movement is against copyright and the GPL is just an anti-copyright copyright (quinophex). [Alug]"From Boot to Halt" talk, Norwich sunday 28th September.
by Syd Hancock 02 Sep '03

02 Sep '03

At the last meeting it was suggested that we have the 'From Boot to Halt' talk at the next Norwich sunday meeting (2pm Sunday 28th September, Nelson Room, The Billy Bluelight, Hall road) MJR has offered to start it off: " I'm happy to give an overview/introduction talk (kernel startup, hand-off to init, types of init, runlevels, common tasks, that sort of thing) and present a poster on some aspect no-one else wants to do." It would be great if there are one or two other people who are willing to join in with information on other aspects of the boot process, especially anyone involved in development or doing any other "fun stuff with start-up and shutdown". An A3 or 2xA4 poster would be helpful too. Some useful and interesting topics would include ways to handle power management/UPS, particularly as more people move to using laptops. Something on APM/ACPI for example? Anyone who is interested, please respond either to the list or privately to either myself and/or Mark. In any event, the introductory talk on the boot process will take place at this meeting - further details and announcement to follow. Syd

[Alug]Do Different Computer Show
by Tarquin Mills 01 Sep '03

01 Sep '03

Hi The Do Different Computer Show that was discussed on IRC has been cancelled. However as a replacement a Spectrum and SAM Coupé computer Show called ORSAM 2003 is to be held in Norwich. For details see: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/speccyverse/orsam.htm You are all warmly invited to come. At the show I would like to have a computer (Linux?) with a webcam and irc server running so that people in North America and others who could not turn up could take part in the show. Maybe a Spectrum or SAM could be connected to it take part in the IRC chat. I could provided a broadband connect only a few metres from the venue, a webcam, a computer and a spectrum. What I do not have is Wireless hardware, knowledge or much time on the day, though I will give what I can. Any help would be much appreciated. -- Tarquin Mills Bring back YS (Then you can ZIP to the Stars with YS, hurrah. Ed) http://www.planet14.sonow4u.co.uk/

[Alug]Linux IP Camera... Ideas on a postcard
by Michael Sage 31 Aug '03

31 Aug '03

All, I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150. I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al. I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB. Couple of questions! 1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow? I guess the ITX box needs to do the following! 1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that! err, I think thats it. Any how, let me know what you think. Regards, Michael

My local telephone exchange is becoming broadband enabled at the end of September and I am working on the assumption that I will be able to use it (BT's site says I MAY). I have a firewall running (Endoshield - very easy to set up) and have just changed it to Bastille which seems to be working (grc.com) Bastille recommends 'psad' which is also now installed. I had Snort and Samhain installed but do I need these? Do I need Packet Mangling enabled in the Kernel which it isn't at present? That'll be a 25 way serial port then not a parallel port. That's what they all used to look like until recently when they tend to all be 9 pin ones. Most of the pins in the 25 pin ones aren't used any more (or ever really especially for RS232). [Alug]Browser URL question
by Edenyard 26 Aug '03

26 Aug '03

Because I often use my browser (Opera, Mozilla) for viewing pages that are stored locally, I set the URL of the home page to be file://localhost/home/gerald/ so that I get a display of that directory whenever the browser starts up. That works well enough for me, except that all of the hidden directories and files are shown at the top of the list and there are lots of them, which means that I have to scroll down quite a way to get to the things that I actually want to click at. Is there some sort of command or environmental variable that can be adjusted (in Opera/Mozilla or somewhere else) that keeps hidden things hidden in the browser's display of my home directory? Any ideas, please, anyone? Cheers, Gerald.

Have a look at apt-zip. You run apt-zip on the slow machine and it writes a script to download the required packages which you then take to the fast machine. After downloading the packages you take them to the slow machine and run apt-zip again to install them. It was originally written to use zip disks but you can now specify any storage location you want AFAIK.
