well, if you want to save a bit of cash I can tell you where to get free padded envelopes from the enemy! It's easy. Just goto the Microsoft website, and sign up for their free CD trials. A few days later you begin to receive packages in nice well padded A4 white envelopes. I have funded my ebay sellings to date through this practice so I can offer cheap P&P This method maybe a little off-hand, but still extremely handy to know... plus you get some nice looking holographic coasters & we're slowly bringing down the company... mwahah, mwahahahahh, mwahahahaahahhah (continues evil laughter) :- ) Tim Neobard ------------- w0037109 SYS3 MSN:fallscrape@hotmail.com ICQ:63488574 Tel:01603 492495 http://www.far2much.info

I am interested in Linux as I no longer wish to be fleeced by MS into constantly upgrading (unnecessarily, IMO) their expensive software. I welcome and endorse the idea of freedom of choice in computing (and anything else) and find myself fully allied to the Linux ideals. The internet has enabled like-minded people to communicate with each other no matter where in the world they are - and amazing things can happen when people get together in a spirit of co-operation. Linux is a superb example what a community can achieve. And all done in with wonderful open-handed generosity. Andrew Benn +44 (0)7798 526962 +44 (0)1263 761133

From my experience, ADSL is > bottom of the league table very slightly above 56k modem, > with wireless at > the top followed by cable modem. I disagree with this entirely :) I would put ADSL at the top as you can run servers and get static ip addresses, no port blocking etc, etc, and place cable modems and wireless far behind ADSL depending on what you dislike less (i.e. ntl and transparent webcaches (yuk), and wireless being unreliable in certain conditions but you can get static ips from some of the services and run servers) Adam

My exchange is about to be converted to broadband (yes!) and I've been advised that getting a router would be the easiest way of getting it to work with linux. In the estemed ALUG's opinion, is this so? The cost isn't really a problem, but I'm concerned about configuration (if any is needed. My knowledge of networks stops at being able to explain what a token ring is...and I have to use 'lord of the flies' as an example) thanks, BenE

Your redhat box should have the hosts-ip name resolutions in your /etc/hosts file, so if you type ssh zxr400 it will look for an entry zxr400 234.567.898.765 (for example) presuming the linux boxes you ssh to are on fixed IP addresses. Or do you mean that it is the actual internet connection you lose? Have you checked that your redhat box has the windows with the modem as its gateway? On debian this info is in a file /etc/network/interfaces. Or do you mean that you type, e.g. ssh www.google.com and the name can't be resolved, in which case you may need to add some name servers to your /etc/resolv.conf file on your redhat box? I may have misunderstood your problem. >I would set up the internet dialup on the linux box and connect the three XP >boxes in the house to it, but I only have a winmodem......... :-) My favourite subject.... At the end of the day it is probably more costly to arrange me getting cash for doing these CDs than just doing them. If I do send people a CD in future I think I may ask that they make an donation to a charity or something. A spindle of blank CD-Rs is so cheap now (works out to about 20p a disc, and you can get some as cheap as 10p a disc if you get overprinted discs) and if i post them it costs 42p to send 3CDs, that you are looking at a cost of around a quid to send the bits of Debian testing that people need(I recycle envelopes to send them out to people so they are free) and I do this so infrequently its not worth sorting out the cash. So from now on if i send people CDs then they can give a small donation to a local charity instead. If I end up doing lots of CDs then I will reconsider this point in the future. Adam

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Mr. C is downloading Knoppix to give it a try but it looks like we might be using RedHat for workstations and put a little bit of effort to get Debian installed for servers. We're also looking into other pieces of software mentioned that could be useful. The machines we'll be installing on are all pretty much identical, maybe a different chipset here and there so once we get one working the others shouldn't be too difficult. There's been a few individual offers of help which I'm sure we'll be taking up as we're bound to come stuck at some point. Now if you'll excuse me while I start to make my banners saying "Microsoft Free Zone" and some giant penguins to decorate the walls with! The machines that we want to install on should become available around June/July time, so watch this space! Plus I hope to make it to some LUG meetings after my exams. Thanks again Ben Francis

[Alug]Introduction of GNU/Linux to Bourne School
by Ben Francis 14 May '03

14 May '03

Dear LUGers I'm been on the ALUG and PLUG mailing lists for some time now (watching and listening) and I'm a sixth form student at Bourne Grammar School. The school is seriously considering setting up a room of around 10 dedicated linux machines in our IT suite which will be a welcome addition to our current NT/2000 network of around 200 PCs. The Director, Mr C. has tried to install Debian at home but has come across the same problems as I did, both of us being newbies to GNU/Linux. We've set up one box in the school with Redhat 8.0 which worked fine and can see the network, but at the moment is sitting there doing nothing (mainly due to my exams). The primary aim is to introduce Open Source to the school on some old 233Mhz PIIs that will be available to use when we (eventually) get a new batch of PCs before the end of the academic year. But if we're going to be able to justify removing the "friendly world of microsoft" from an entire IT room the machines will have to be usable by everyone in the school for at least some things. They'll ideally need to access their existing Windows home directories, shared printers etc. and at the least be able to use them for word processing with Open Office and web browsing. We're also looking at the possibility of using GNU/Linux for file servers, print servers or even an internal web server running Apache (so I can do PHP programming! yey!) We're still looking at lots of different distros but it's currently looking like we'll either be going for RedHat or Debian. I'm open to either but really want to get to know Debian which seems the geekier of the two :-) Firstly I was considering buying a book, either for me or through the school to get me/us started, and wondered if you had any recommendations. I liked the look of "Learning Debian GNU/Linux" [http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1565927052/qid%3D1052832905/026-24 92735-5301226] but the reviews on Amazon seem rather negative. It comes with and is written for Debian 2.1 - should we be using Debian 3.0? Secondly I'd like to ask if anyone in either ALUG or PLUG would be willing to give us any help. We'd LOVE to have someone come in and help us out and if someone would be willing to do a workshop style session for a group of students on either how to install Linux or the basics of using it that could also be an option. There's always the possibility of trying to arrange holding an actual LUG meeting with the school as the venue (?), I've seen requests for a LUG meeting in Bourne on the lists before.- (At school, we have power sockets, a LAN and a dedicated 2 meg internet connection to play with. And round the corner from a few pubs if you are so inclined, what more could we ask for?) If I can prove that Linux can easily be set up to run side by side with our Micro$oft dominated network with no real problems, then there's a real possibility of the Linux liberation to spread to other parts of the school, and in the longrun saving the school a LOT of money on software licences. I'm open to any ideas and support in my quest for Open Source in school would be greatly appreciated! They also charge a fairly hefty connection fee but the good sides are they made BT fix our phone line that was not suitable for ADSL (BT said we could never have adsl as we were too far from the exchange and other lies), replied to my one and only tech query in record time (i.e. out of hours!) and setup the reverse DNS I asked for about 2 minutes afterwards, gave me an ipv6 connection along with the ipv4, got us online in 3 days (from initial order to connection!), support linux (and any OS you like if it has an tcp/ip stack and can connect to adsl then they will endeavor to help you out), they also gave us a useful setup book with all of our connection details in which will be most useful when something goes wrong and we can't remember our password or server names or something. In all, I can't fault them. This is definetly a case of "you get what you pay for" I will definetly be buying adsl connection services from them in the future. Adam

If you visit http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-mfgs.html#HEWLETT-PACKARD (the SANE website supported-hardware list) if you scroll down a bit it says the 5300C uses the sane-avision backend, not the "sane-hp" (which is what I am guessing you have looked for hence you saying "hp-backend") There is a couple of links from that page also. [Alug]HP scanner 5300C
by F J Brooks 07 May '03

07 May '03

I am a complete newbie and have recently installed SuSE 8.1. Has anyone been able to make an HP Scanjet 5300C scanner work with SuSE 8.1? I've been all round SANE - and out the other side. I've tried the articles in the April 2003 issue of Linux Journal, and in the December 2002 issue of Linux Format. I've downloaded the Yolux tutorial : Scanners and Linux, and the FAQs about SANE hp-backend. I've consulted several Sane pages from the SuSE manual. I can make none of them work - at least partly because they do not give step-by-step instructions. They're all so varied and inconsistent: one moment giving actual commands, the next speaking in generalities, such as: 'To build the backends package, it's a simple case of unpacking the tarball and performing the usual configure/make incantation.' and: '...it's time to choose the backend driver. For most scanners you can make educated guesses from the SANE website supported-hardware list.' [As our American cousins say: 'Excuse me!? Come again!?] As a newbie, such 'instructions leave me, not only cold, but fumingly frustrated. Can anyone help, please? BTW it seems to be de rigeur to add a sign-off. Perhaps I could run this up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes it: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana Fred

[Alug]Councils and Linux
by Tarquin Mills 07 May '03

07 May '03

Hello, sometime appear on the IRC meetings as Shadowtlx and have just rejoined this mailing list. Below is a question I asked Norwich City Council. Question. In this time of council cuts and cash shortages, how much money is the council spending on Microsoft software (e.g. MS Windows, MS Office etc)? Including the cost of Windows when bought as part of new systems. As an alternative, the council could use free software. Free operating systems could be used instead of MS Windows such as Linux, NetBSD etc. These OSes are of a commercial standard and because they are open source are available on a large number of hardware platforms. This means they could remove windows from their computers without needing to change the computers, in fact Linux is more efficient so old computers can be used for longer. Linux (the third most popular PC OS and second most popular server OS) is more secure than Windows, OpenBSD is a version of BSD with security a top concern. All these OS are immune to Windows viruses. Linux is a clone of Unix (an OS that has been in existence since 1969). The open system Unix (is produced by several manufacturers) and along with Windows are the 2 main OS in use. Using Linux instead of Windows and commercial Unix will unite computers leading to standardisation. For web browsing there is Mozilla (an open source version of Netscape). For office software there is OpenOffice.org 1, KDEoffice etc. You get all this for no cost, what is more the software has a licence that stops people charging for it in the future e.g. the GPL. Supplemental Question. Are free OSes and there apps being trialled by the council? By adopting Linux the council would be helping to put Norwich and Norfolk into a more modern outlook when it comes to IT. If the council insists on using commercial operating systems then why not have local OS such as the one developed in East Anglia. RISC OS computers are more enviromently friendly. "Office software is a problem for local authorities because of the expense", says Socitm national secretary Bob Griffith. Unilever is migrating its IT infrastructure to Linux. The move will contribute to a cost saving of 66 million pounds. "Everytime we put in Linux, we are amazed and surprised at it's speed and the reliability with which we can run it." said Unilever. In answer to the main question they said they will pass my suggests on the companies running the councils IT in a 15 year outsourceing contract. During the asking of the supplemental question I tried to press them into giving a figure on M$ costs, but all they would say is that there contractors said the cost of finding out was disproportionate. So Norwich City Council does not know the costs of services of one of it's major suppliers. I intended to ask Norfolk County Council the same questions. -- Tarquin Mills Reboot Movement (An Anti-Wintel Campaign) http://www.planet14.sonow4u.co.uk/comp/reboot/
