Grub issues

I have a 750 pIII with Gentoo on it, got the system cheap cos i work in a computer shop. built OS, kernel and so on, but im having trouble with grub.... now, the help file said to : # grub grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) grub> quit # nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf nano> default 0 nano> timeout 30 nano> # there is a splash image here, but i cant remember the path, and commenting nano> # it out doesnt change things nano> nano> title Mp3/web server nano> root (hd0,0) nano> kernel (hd0,0)/bzImage root=/dev/hda2 nano> when i run grub> setup (hd0), i get a messages about grub.conf - a positive message. copying it to manu.lst dosent work either. when i boot, i get grub screen, as if i had run grub from the command prompt. no sign of the splash screen. i assume this is a broken config? if i then type: grub> kernel (hd0,0)/bzImage grub> boot the system will boot as normal. BTW hda1 = /boot = 50mb hda2 = / = ~19.8GB hda3 = swap = 150mb ideally i want this booting, then ill build apache, mysql, php and all the other stuff. the 20gb is temporary, will buy an 80GB and serve streaming mp3s from a website over the local lan. How to remove an operating system

Can anyone advise on how to safely remove an operating system on a dual boot laptop? I have a laptop with a WIN XP partition and a Red Hat 7.2 partition, with GRUB as the boot manager. As I've now got a PC I can use as a dedicated Linux system I now need to put the laptop back to a single operating system Windoze XP. I have Partition Magic 7.0, but I'm concerned about just repartitioning/reformating the Linux partition. I don't want to end up with an unbootable laptop. Preferably I would end up with just one partition (Windows C:) and the laptop would boot straight into Windows without any boot manager program. Has anyone experience in this area got suggestions as to how to proceed safely? Thanks Karl Middleton

OK, I've never actually joined a LUG before, which is strange since I've been working with Linux now for 5 years and Unix since 1994, I don't know what to expect from the group, but hope I will be of some help to further the cause. Recommendations for Domain Name hosting?

Hi Folks, I am currently toying with the idea of registering a domain name. It is something I have never done before so would appreciate advice from more experienced ALUGers on which hosting company to choose. I do not currently have a webpage/website so, although I would like to choose a company which would allow this so as to keep my options open for the future, my main purpose for registering a domain name is to be able to quote it to people to use for sending me email. I would preferably like the hosting company to allow me an infinite number of username mailboxes for incoming emails for my domain name (i.e so I can use ian(a)mydomainname.com, usefullmail(a)mydomainname.com, unwantedspam(a)mydomainname.com, deleteonreciept(a)mydomainname.com etc). I am not bothered whether I need to collect incoming emails from the hosting company myself via POP or whether they simply automatically redirect my incoming emails to my existing email account with my existing ISP. Are there any particular domain name hosting companies more experienced ALUGers could recommend? Or, alternatively, any horror stories about experiences with other companies that people would like to share with me to warn me about them (though these negative comments may be best sent privately to me rather than posted on the public ALUG list)? I live in Ipswich. If I find any small, local, domain name hosting companies would ALUGers recommend I use them or should I choose one of the big companies based in America? Finally, a practical question about actually registering my domain name: I have noticed that some companies entries in the WHOIS database include their address and telephone number as well as a contact name. Obviously, as a private individual, I am not too keen on the entire world knowing my address and telephone number as I have enough problems with email spam and don't want this nuisance expanded with loads of unsolicited paper mail and telephone calls as well. Is the publication of address and telephone number information compulsory or is it possible to just register a contact name when registering a domain name? Recommendations for MP3 editor

I'm looking for a Debian package that provides a simple audio editor for some MP3's I have. Scanning the Debian site I've seen sweep, ecawave and audacity. Has anyone used any of these and, if so, what are your thoughts about them? Hi, My box had a problem with usb and hung. When I rebooted, it hung for ages on "cannot create /var/log/ksymoops/20030319.log. Read-only file system" then continued booting but brought up similar messages about not being able to create various files. Looking at 20030319.log, the permissions are 644 and it was created at the time of the reboot. It consists of lines such as 20030319 111648 start /sbin/modprobe -s -k -- usb0 safemode=1 20030319 111648 probe ended over and over. Commands such as "cp" and "rm" will no longer work, nor will vi, as I appear to be running a "read-only" file system. Flavour is debian, kernel 2.4.19. Can anybody help? I suppose that means it hadn't run on the previous boot even though it said it had. It seems okay now. My box has only crashed twice in the space of a year and both times has been a usb problem. Ta. Folks, A broadcast message (apologies to all who thereby receive cross-postings) to let you know that the excellent book "Unix Text Processing", originally by Dale Dougherty and Tim Reilly and published in 1987 by O'Reilly and Associates (increasingly famous for the outstanding series of "O'Reillys" on all sorts of aspects of Unix and Linux):-- -- having been released into the public domain by O'Reilly has been re-created as groff source code by a team of volunteers coordinated by Larry Kollar, and reformatted into PostScript and PDF. The result, now at "beta 2.1a", is available from http://www.alltel.net/~kollar/utp/ and is essentially complete. For those of you who may wonder what it's really about: -- it covers the use of Unix troff and friends, and the use of many of the general Unix utilities (vi, ex, sed, awk etc) in the coordinated way that Unix (and of course Linux) so readily permits, to produce high quality and sophisticated documents and books of almost arbitrary complexity, with the writer having control over the finest detail of layout and typesetting. Future planned developments will bring the book up to date with respect to the more recent devopments embodied in GNU groff, James Clark's re-creation of the Unix troff suite of programs. I was at the meeting venue today, where was everyone else?

I was at UEA today, in Union House, in the correct room, at 2:20pm. However, no-one else was around. In fact, there was no indication that the ALUG meeting was ever going to happen, i.e. no signs, no notices in the room, etc. What happened? I waited a few minutes, assumed the meeting had been cancelled and went back home. Is this the start of the Cambridge CLUG experience, i.e. the meeting is at this specific venue, but you have to 'use the force' to find the other members! -- Ashley T. ODBC on RH8

I've just started try to do some programming on a Linux based system, after years of working in WinDoze. One of the first hurdles I'm facing is that the current project requires accessing a remote MySql server (remote, but on the same LAN). I'm assuming its possible to set up some sort of ODBC service, but for the life of me I can't find out the right way to do this. Has anyone got any hints please? Gnome 1.4 Startup Program Problem

Any ideas on this one? My system is based on Debian Woody, I'm using Gnome 1.4 with Enlightenment 0.16.5 with Nautilus as my desktop manager (so I can drop icons on the desktop - works a treat! :o) ). I'm using 'chbg' to randomly change my desktop background and that works fine too Problem is I've set chbg as an application to startup with Gnome when I log in, trouble with that is that each time I log out and then back in another copy of chbg starts up. UEA meeting (16th March)

Hello ya'll. I havee been informed that there was a provisinal date for the UEA meeting of ALUG this weekend (Sunday 16th March). As opposed to the previous UEA meeting, this one will be ... semi organised!!!. I have booked a room in Union House for it, and will try to get there early enough to put up relevent penguin pictures pointing to room 1.33 which is the bigg room at the end of the corridor... the only problem with this room is that if we have more then sixty people turn up, then we will be forced to turn some away...
