I was at the meeting venue today, where was everyone else?
by Ashley 17 Mar '03

17 Mar '03

I was at UEA today, in Union House, in the correct room, at 2:20pm. However, no-one else was around. In fact, there was no indication that the ALUG meeting was ever going to happen, i.e. no signs, no notices in the room, etc. What happened? I waited a few minutes, assumed the meeting had been cancelled and went back home. Is this the start of the Cambridge CLUG experience, i.e. the meeting is at this specific venue, but you have to 'use the force' to find the other members! -- Ashley T. ODBC on RH8
by Tony Dietrich 16 Mar '03

16 Mar '03

I've just started try to do some programming on a Linux based system, after years of working in WinDoze. One of the first hurdles I'm facing is that the current project requires accessing a remote MySql server (remote, but on the same LAN). I'm assuming its possible to set up some sort of ODBC service, but for the life of me I can't find out the right way to do this. Has anyone got any hints please? I'm using NetBeans or KDevelop, as my programming environment, it that affects anything :P -- Tony Dietrich Transoft Computer Consultants 07769710115

Gnome 1.4 Startup Program Problem
by Keith Watson 14 Mar '03

14 Mar '03

Any ideas on this one? My system is based on Debian Woody, I'm using Gnome 1.4 with Enlightenment 0.16.5 with Nautilus as my desktop manager (so I can drop icons on the desktop - works a treat! :o) ). I'm using 'chbg' to randomly change my desktop background and that works fine too Problem is I've set chbg as an application to startup with Gnome when I log in, trouble with that is that each time I log out and then back in another copy of chbg starts up. How do I prevent multiple copies of chbg starting up? Keith ____________ Courage does not always roar, sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying; 'Sod it! Changing file owners
by Edenyard 13 Mar '03

13 Mar '03

Dear All, I'd be grateful for some guidance on this. As a Linux novice, I set up my system and used it with gay abandon as root (I know, I know...), gathering all sorts of useful data on the disk. Now I know better (!), I have different user accounts, but the problem is that I have entire directories with subdirectories under them and files in all those, all of which belong to root/root. WHen I want to move them as an ordinary user, of course I'm denied access. My question is: is there a command that I can issue (as root, presumably) that will go through an entire directory (including all the subs and files in each), changing the ownership of everything to what I specify (e.g., root/users or gerald/users, perhaps)? Any clues most welcome! Gerald.

How do I low level format a hard disk?
by Ian Douglas 11 Mar '03

11 Mar '03

Hi Folks, I was happily using my dual-boot Windows/Linux hard disk this morning when the PC suddenly locked up. If I now try to boot it I get the error message "Missing Operating System". If I boot from a Knoppix CD and do fdisk the confused entries in my partition table suggest my hard disk is about 70GB (when it is actually only 6GB). I am not sure what Linux repair tools would be any use, but if I run my Windows Norton's Utilities Disk Doctor program from CD it instantly comes back saying "Norton Disk Doctor cannot continue testing this disk. Only a low-level format will correct the error found". Searching back through my brain I seem to recall that many years ago I performed a low-level format on a hard disk using a facility within the PC's BIOS but cannot find this facility on my current PC (Compaq Deskpro 4000). Is anyone aware of any Linux progs which will perform a low level format of a hard disk? Thanks, Ian. PS: Don't know if it is relevant but the hard disk is a Quantum Fireball CR64A013

RE: [Alug] Re: wireless WANS
by Michael Sage 02 Mar '03

Tristan, I have just printed off a map for having Freethorpe as the broadcast centre. I think within 2.5 miles should be easy enough to do (bit of hardware cost involved for each thou). It would then cover: Beighton Halvergate Freethorpe Cantley Reedham I suspect within this area we should be able to get enough interest to make it viable. We can always have a line bigger than a meg put in here, although to be honest most people will be happy to have a perminant connection let alone more bandwidth, I know I would be, I have even looked at 64kbps leased lines, I want it more for the IP and the hosting stuff at home more than anything. If we just do the maths quickly. 1mb = 1024kb 1024 / 64 (the minium people would want) = 16 16 / 8000 (yearly cost) = 41.67per month To get down to the 64Kbps all people would have to be connected at once, BT have a 50:1 contention ratio on 512kbp ADSL pipes in a worst case this means people will only get 20Kbps so maybe we should let a couple more in?? Great new plans for alug library afoot!
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 28 Feb '03

28 Feb '03

Hullo All, Adam, Kirsty and I have agreed to share the job of setting up and running the alug library. We are hoping that one or the other of us can take the books to each meeting for members to browse through and borrow. We will even keep overdue fines low - say, two chocolate biscuits per book per week late? ;-) Our first job will be to try and gather together all the books we currently have, then have a think about how to get some more donations or freebies. Any ideas please mail us offlist, and if anyone currently has any alug books, could they do the same so we can start catalogueing them? I hold my hands up to having had Cathedral and Bazaar for at least three months, that is about ten packets of chocolate hobnobs I need to bring to the next meeting by now. Whilst I'm here: I'm currently working on some extremely exciting stuff here at work, and spend all day doing R&D with linux. It occurred to me recently that two years ago I was doing a very different job using very different software, and although I still ask ridiculous questions from time to time of the list, I would like to thank everyone for the help I got when I first joined and my ridiculous questions averaged three a day - your help and patient answers have stood me in good stead. Thanks! :-) Jenny.

Wireless WANS (i.e. Norfolk)

26 Feb '03

To Fellow ALUGers, I would like to make an appeal to all of you without broadband in the area, how would you feel about setting up a wireless wan (they are doing it all over the country and in other regions (Suffolk, Cambridge)). As I live in the middle of no where I am not commercially viable, but I believe with the power of the penguin I can jump onto someone else's wireless network, with their permission and do things that way. Check out http://locustworld.com for the meshAP kit, which we can build cheaper, also www.invisible.net.uk for other stuff. Let me know what u think! Linux, Java, etc tutorials
by Keith Watson 26 Feb '03

26 Feb '03

A colleague has just pointed me in the direction of the IBM DeveloperWorks site <www.ibm.com/developerworks>. They have a number of areas which they call "Technology Zones" one of which is Linux, if you go to a zone and then select Education from the left hand menu there are a number of tutorials that look interesting e.g. Introduction to XFree86 4.X, Configuring TCP/IP under Linux, Backing up your Linux machines, CVS for the developer or amateur, Getting to know GRUB, Compiling and installing software from sources, to name but a few. You can view them online or download zipped HTML or a PDF. You'll need to register (but what the heck, on the internet no one know you're a dog ;-) ) I've skimmed through a couple and my 1st impression is that they're useful introductory material but tend to lack a bit of detail. Probably a good starting point for someone new to a topic before getting into the more detailed stuff. Keith ____________ BAROMETER, n.
