How do I low level format a hard disk?

Hi Folks, I was happily using my dual-boot Windows/Linux hard disk this morning when the PC suddenly locked up. If I now try to boot it I get the error message "Missing Operating System". If I boot from a Knoppix CD and do fdisk the confused entries in my partition table suggest my hard disk is about 70GB (when it is actually only 6GB). I am not sure what Linux repair tools would be any use, but if I run my Windows Norton's Utilities Disk Doctor program from CD it instantly comes back saying "Norton Disk Doctor cannot continue testing this disk. Only a low-level format will correct the error found". Searching back through my brain I seem to recall that many years ago I performed a low-level format on a hard disk using a facility within the PC's BIOS but cannot find this facility on my current PC (Compaq Deskpro 4000). Is anyone aware of any Linux progs which will perform a low level format of a hard disk? Thanks, Ian. PS: Don't know if it is relevant but the hard disk is a Quantum Fireball CR64A013

Digital Camera

I want to buy and inexpensive digital camera from which I can capture pictures on my PC via USB. 2 megapixels will do me but of course I want it to be linux friendly. Any recommendations? Ian P.S At a pinch, transferring images via flash memory would be OK too.

Tristan, I have just printed off a map for having Freethorpe as the broadcast centre. I think within 2.5 miles should be easy enough to do (bit of hardware cost involved for each thou). It would then cover: Beighton Halvergate Freethorpe Cantley Reedham I suspect within this area we should be able to get enough interest to make it viable. We can always have a line bigger than a meg put in here, although to be honest most people will be happy to have a perminant connection let alone more bandwidth, I know I would be, I have even looked at 64kbps leased lines, I want it more for the IP and the hosting stuff at home more than anything. If we just do the maths quickly. 1mb = 1024kb 1024 / 64 (the minium people would want) = 16 16 / 8000 (yearly cost) = 41.67per month To get down to the 64Kbps all people would have to be connected at once, BT have a 50:1 contention ratio on 512kbp ADSL pipes in a worst case this means people will only get 20Kbps so maybe we should let a couple more in?? Ideas please. Great new plans for alug library afoot!

Hullo All, Adam, Kirsty and I have agreed to share the job of setting up and running the alug library. We are hoping that one or the other of us can take the books to each meeting for members to browse through and borrow. We will even keep overdue fines low - say, two chocolate biscuits per book per week late? ;-) Our first job will be to try and gather together all the books we currently have, then have a think about how to get some more donations or freebies. Any ideas please mail us offlist, and if anyone currently has any alug books, could they do the same so we can start catalogueing them? I hold my hands up to having had Cathedral and Bazaar for at least three months, that is about ten packets of chocolate hobnobs I need to bring to the next meeting by now. Whilst I'm here: I'm currently working on some extremely exciting stuff here at work, and spend all day doing R&D with linux. It occurred to me recently that two years ago I was doing a very different job using very different software, and although I still ask ridiculous questions from time to time of the list, I would like to thank everyone for the help I got when I first joined and my ridiculous questions averaged three a day - your help and patient answers have stood me in good stead. desktop icons

I don't suppose anyone knows of a program that can put icons on the desktop pls? I'm using fluxbox, and although I've seen nautilus working with it, I'm not a fan. It's a bit too...I dunno...clunky? I haven't been able to google anything (which I'm ashamed at ::grin::) and I've been racking my brain, but I don't think I've ever heard of anything apart from nautilus that will do it (well, apart from kde, but I don't fancy hacking the code out ::grin::) cheers, BenE

Wireless WANS (i.e. Norfolk)

To Fellow ALUGers, I would like to make an appeal to all of you without broadband in the area, how would you feel about setting up a wireless wan (they are doing it all over the country and in other regions (Suffolk, Cambridge)). As I live in the middle of no where I am not commercially viable, but I believe with the power of the penguin I can jump onto someone else's wireless network, with their permission and do things that way. Linux, Java, etc tutorials

A colleague has just pointed me in the direction of the IBM DeveloperWorks site <www.ibm.com/developerworks>. They have a number of areas which they call "Technology Zones" one of which is Linux, if you go to a zone and then select Education from the left hand menu there are a number of tutorials that look interesting e.g. Introduction to XFree86 4.X, Configuring TCP/IP under Linux, Backing up your Linux machines, CVS for the developer or amateur, Getting to know GRUB, Compiling and installing software from sources, to name but a few. You can view them online or download zipped HTML or a PDF. You'll need to register (but what the heck, on the internet no one know you're a dog ;-) ) I've skimmed through a couple and my 1st impression is that they're useful introductory material but tend to lack a bit of detail. There is a £300 wireless router somewhere... If you wait for the current providers to do it they'l have everyone by the short and curlies and be charging us a lot for a little. If I was the headmaster, the "number of restrictions you need to be made aware of" would include "Connect anyone to this thing without my express permission and you're fired". In last year's UK Networking Industry Awards, of which I'm one of the judges, one of the entries was an educational establishment that was very proud of its new wireless LAN installation. Sadly, at no point did the entry blurb (which was many pages long) include terms like "security" or "encryption" - in fact the implementors were proud that you could surf outside the school buildings on your laptop. They didn't win. By way of a footnote, it's interesting to see how many companies don't turn on security by default. At the Networks Telecom Show at the NEC last June, a friend of mine who runs a super little security product dealership/consultancy was showing me his new toy - a wireless LAN analyser from Vernier Networks. We stood in the middle of the NEC identifying literally dozens of insecure servers on this thing, because the vast majority of exhibitors didn't have security turned on in their wireless installations. Not a problem at a trade show, you'd think, but you must remember that many stands have phone/ISDN links back to the main office, thus giving any old muppet with (in our case) an iPaq and a few hundred quid's worth of software a really nice route into their corporate networks.
