Mono monitor and xd640
by Glen Tyler 17 Feb '03

17 Feb '03

Hi I'm trying to use a b+w monitor with the new xd640 desktop. This desktop uses the fvwm2 window manager and is built with FLTK. I was using an X configuration with 1bpp as the default colour depth which is OK for fvwm2, but not for FLTK. I now have set the colour depth to 4bpp, but need to change the colour assignments in fvwm2rc so that I can see what is going on. I think that I can use a greyscale palette, or shades of grey/black and white. I know that white is rgb:ffff/ffff/ffff and black rgb:0/0/0, but does anyone know where I'd get info on shades of grey and how to set them? I've had a look around the man pages at setpalette etc but this doesn't seem to have what I'm looking for. thanks Glen

Hard Disk Problems
by Ian Douglas 12 Feb '03

12 Feb '03

Hi, When I booted my PC this morning it would not start XWindows. Looking more closely at the boot messages I can see, the following errors mingled in amongst the normal messages: /etc/init.d/rcS: line 9: /dev/null: Read-only filesystem /etc/init.d/rcS: line 28: /dev/null: Read-only filesystem ERROR: Could not open /dev/null (Read-Only file system) Setting up IP spoofing protection: FAILED Configuring network interfaces... modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-11 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-18 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-9 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-11 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-18 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-9 SIOCSIFADDR: No such device eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device SIOCSFBRDADDR: No such device Starting portmap daemon. portmapstart-stop-daemon: nothing in /proc - not mounted? grep: /proc/filesystems: No such file or directory. Starting system log daemon:syslogstart-stop-daemon: nothing in /proc - not mounted? Starting system log daemon:syslogstart-stop-daemon: nothing in /proc - not mounted? Starting mail transport agent: smailstart-stop-daemon:.... When I ran fsck it immediately came back saying the disks had been unmounted cleanly so no check was made. I then tried running e2fsck with the "force check" option and have supposedly fixed all the errors it found but the above errors are still mingled in with the other boot messages when I reboot. If I look in /dev I can see null as -rw-r--r-- If I look in / I can see /proc as dr-xr-xr-x Question: Can the above errors be fixed manually or is it reinstall time? I am running Knoppix 3.1 (installed on my hard disk rather than running off a CD) Ian.

X11 and broadband limits
by tom potts 12 Feb '03

12 Feb '03

Thanks for the X11 stuff everyone! Re the broadband limit - I'm sorry it wasnt on the contract I signed - if someone sold me a car and then it arrived without the engine 'to preserve profitability' no-one would think me extreeme in returning it for a full refund. They offered a service to get market share and they may be able to impose restrictions on NEW users but they've made their bed and they can bloody well sleep in it! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [Alug] Linux & DOS peer-to-peer network
by Edenyard 12 Feb '03

12 Feb '03

Grateful thanks to MJR and Steve for pointing me in the right direction over my DOS <-> Linux ethernet link. After some Googling, I found something called XFS for DOS V1.86, which appears to provide the DOS end of NFS, so presumably if I can get that to work then I can use NFS at the Linux end. XFS seems quite old (c. 1994) and the documentation leaves a huge amount to be desired, but if it does the job, I suppose I can't complain! For now, I'm trying desperately hard to learn about networking on the Linux end. (Not trivial for a Bear of Little Brain....) The plan is to get the two machines to respond to the 'ping' function first and then (hopefully) progress from there. If anyone's interested, I could report back when I've finally got it to go. Thanks again for the pointers! Gerald.

Oops, I meant to send the below to the list... On Tue, 11 Feb 2003 08:44:57 +0000 (GMT) tom potts <madtom1999(a)yahoo.com> wrote: > I was just wondering if its possible to 'spoof' VNC > screen sizes? > ie I install a 'remote' PC with X11 on a minimal > graphics card and then, while connecting in with VNC I > pretend its as good as the graphics card/screen on the > machine I'm using as 'monitor'. > Tom If the remote PC is running the X11 version of VNC as you describe then yes, because the way VNC works with X11 is that the VNC server is a proper X server with a virtual screen which is distinct from the monitor screen. The virtual screen can be a different resolution and different colour depth than the real one. Steve.

I was just wondering if its possible to 'spoof' VNC screen sizes? ie I install a 'remote' PC with X11 on a minimal graphics card and then, while connecting in with VNC I pretend its as good as the graphics card/screen on the machine I'm using as 'monitor'. You really want to hurt a small British company designing and making remarkably innovative British goods (as far as this is possible nowadays) in competition with the overwhelming Microsoft market? This company needs your support, not your boycott. > A. be encouraged to GPL *all* of the code in question. Agreed: it seems to me the code is useless to anyone else, it will only run on Castle hardware anyway. It would therefore seem that releasing the source would be an easy solution to the problem. Unfortunately it probably includes sections licensed from elsewhere and those people would complain. Maybe they can isolate the sections. > B. be encouraged to remove all disputed code and rewrite using BSD > style/licensed sources. Yes, it sounds (I know nothing of what has actually happened) as if this is what they ought to have done in the first place, and it would have been as easy and much better. Sounds as if they have made a mistake. Sounds as if correcting this will cost a small innovative British company a good bit of money and produce no winners, except that it will make a point (to use BSD and not Linux). Their mistake (to have used Linux source and not BSD) does not seem to me to have many victims. Except themselves, if the GPL community takes action. Conclusion: BSD is the only software that is really free in every sense of the word. -- Christopher Dawkins, Felsted School, Dunmow, Essex CM6 3JG 01371-822698, mobile 07816 821659 cchd(a)felsted.essex.sch.uk

Hard disks - how to tell if one (which one) is about to fail?
by Steve Fosdick 08 Feb '03

08 Feb '03

Over the last day or so I have found that occasionaly things wait for disk I/O longer than I would normally expect and before the data is returned there is a noticable click coming from one (or both) of the hard disks, presumably as the head is retruned to track 0. Sometimes this click goes hand in hand with a kernel message like: hdb: timeout waiting for DMA ide_dmaproc: chipset supported ide_dma_timeout func only: 14 Sometimes the above messages are acompanied by one saying the kernel has reset the IDE bus and sometimes there is no message from the kernel at all sugesting that the drive itself is attempting some kind of recovery. I am guessing from this that one of the disks is on its way out, but the question is which one? The hdb mentioned above isn't a guide as the kernel also logs DMA timeouts for hda too. When booting the BIOS reports both drives as S.M.A.R.T. capable and status OK so I tied installing some Linux S.M.A.R.T software - smartsuite. Linux & DOS peer-to-peer network
by Edenyard 08 Feb '03

08 Feb '03

Dear List, Please could anyone shed light on this for me? I have two PCs, one a dual-boot Linux/DOS Athlon and one a DOS-only 586. When both are running DOS, I use Invisible-LAN to connect them so that I can transfer files quickly and easily via their Ethernet adapters (one 3Com 3C509 and one with DEC 21041 chip, connected via UTP). I can't find anything that will enable me to connect them when one is running DOS and the other is running Linux (Slack 8.1, 2.4.18). I can't get Invisible-LAN to run in DOSEMU, either, so I seem to be stuck. Can anyone suggest what I could run at the DOS end and what to do at the Linux end so that both will talk to each other on the Ethernet? Thanks in advance! Gerald.

IMAP problems with Kmail
by Ian Douglas 06 Feb '03

06 Feb '03

Hi Folks, I store all my incoming email on my home network's central mail server. When in my Living Room I read this email via Kmail on my laptop using IMAP. Unfortunately, recently, when starting Kmail it occasionally throws up an error message saying: "Error: The process for imap://hedgehog.noahsark.the-zub.net died unexpectedly" followed immediately by an error message saying: "The application KMail crashed and caused a signal 11 SIGSEGV. An application mostly receives the SIGSEGV signal due to a bug in the application. The application was asked to save its documents. Starting backtrace... No debugging symbols found" Arrrggghhh! memories of the Blue Screen Of Death coming flooding back from my experiences with another operating system! My laptop is quite old and slow (100MHz) and takes 1 minute 49 seconds to start up Kmail once the kmail icon has been clicked and I have noticed that this error occurs most frequently when I run the laptop using it's battery where it runs slightly (but noticeably) slower than when running off the mains power pack. I am therefore wondering if I have hit some kind of handshake timeout problem during the Kmail startup process. Do I, for example, need to somewhere extend a timeout period variable relating to the response time between Kmail and the IMAP server while the laptops processor is busy thrashing around trying to start Kmail? Has anyone else come across this error or can suggest a way to get round it? As a temporary fix I have started using Sylpheed (which I am growing to like) but Eye kneed aye spell chequer. Ian.

Co-lo Server Advice Needed (CC'd to list)
by Michael Sage 06 Feb '03

James, I work for a company in Norwich that does colocation, if you are still after some advice and/or a quote then drop me a line tomorrow on 0845 345 455!! Hope this helps Regards, Michael Sage -----Original Message----- From: main-admin(a)lists.alug.org.uk [mailto:main-admin@lists.alug.org.uk]On Behalf Of James Green Sent: 03 February 2003 23:30 To: main(a)lists.alug.org.uk Subject: [Alug] Co-lo Server Advice Needed Hi all, Long time since I've posted here - long time since I've actually been subscribed for one reason or another... Anyway, the company I work for is investigating the purchase of floorspace in a facility in London. We have a quote for space in Level3, which we look to be taking up. I am told that part of the setup fee includes the installation of a 42U cabinet with various shelves. Into this we are struggling to identify hardware. We are already in webserving and voice applications, and we are looking to expand by having our own hardware. Now - does anyone have any experience in identifying kit and what gotchers we can expect along the way. We've been advised that the sort of requirements we have are pretty rare and thus expertise may have to be gained from multiple sources, fingers crossed that they happen to work together. Can anyone provide some advice (I know specifics would be helpful here) or perhaps phone numbers of contacts that would be used (we could be willing to pay for consultancy at this level). I'm probably the most technical at the company and thus am dealing with this matter, but I'm out of my depth here. Help! Advice! Shine a torch and let me see with at least moderate clue! We're looking at: * RAS box with E1 terminating into it supporting traditional PC plus mobile phone connections * WAP Gateway server * 2x Webservers * 1x WAP content platform * 1x dialup billing system * 1x possible IVR with E1 terminating into it. Sadly some of the products we're bringing in as ASP/MSSQL based, and thus the hardware costs x, the Microsoft licensing costs x more :(. The servers that will host our company created bits will be *nix though. My Mozilla no longer does DNS lookups
by Ian Douglas 06 Feb '03

06 Feb '03

Hi Folks, My Mozilla browser has suddenly, for no apparent reason, stopped doing DNS lookups. I was using Mozilla quite happily doing some web browsing yesterday evening then temporarily exited it to check my emails using Kmail. I then restarted Mozilla and, frustratingly, discovered that I could no longer browse the web with it. Every time I type in a URL it immediately comes back saying page not found. If however I do a ping to suss out the websites IP Address and type this IP Address directly into Mozilla then it finds the webpage and loads it ok. The problem still exists this morning, even though I have rebooted my PC several times in the mean time. I can of course still check my emails and ping using URLs, I can even use the Opera browser without problems; it is just the DNS lookup part of Mozilla which has stopped working. Has anyone else come across this problem? If so how did you solve it? Confused and bewildered... Ian.

chroot jail for ftp
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 05 Feb '03

05 Feb '03

Hi, I'm setting up an ftp server that I wanted to run in a chroot jail. I've created /home/ftp and created the basic etc, bin, lib, pub, dev, usr directory structure with the necessary files and correct permissions on them. Now what I'm unsure of is how I tell ftp that is where it has to run from. Do I need to modify the inetd.conf line ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.ftpd to something like ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /home/ftp/usr/sbin/in.ftpd Then create the sbin directory in /home/ftp/usr and copy in the in.ftpd program? Or do I leave inetd.conf as it is and create a wrapper script. If anyone has any experience of setting ftp up in a chroot jail, I'd be grateful of any pointers to web sites, or hints..the info I've found is always somehow missing parts I need to know. Thanks, Jenny.

Best way to play .MOV files under GNU/Linux
by Keith Watson 05 Feb '03

Any trekkies out there might be interested to know about a bunch of Minnesota fans who have made their own Star Trek look-alike episode using the original Star Trek look and feel, see <http://www.StarshipExeter.com> The episode is offered as a series of QuickTime .mov files, can anyone suggest the best way I can view these on a Debian Woody based system? I would have thought anywhere was cheaper than London - you could probably fly one round in a helicopter and save money - and it would be more accessible than London on slightly snowy day. Price yourself out of the market - move to London and knacker your staff! Computers and computer staff should never be in London! Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? nfs connection - CD umount problem/ WMs /Booting CDs
by Glen Tyler 04 Feb '03

Now that I have a working crossover connection between two computers everything is great, the client can see the CDRom and Home directory of the server and install etc works fine. The only difficulty that I seem to have is getting the CDRom to unmount from the server. I boot the server and mount the cd, then mount the nfs directory on the client, transfer required files and unmount the nfs. If I want to change CD then I have to umount it to open the draw, but unmount always replies with 'device is busy'. The man page suggest 'a lazy unmount - "umount -l /mnt/cdrom" gets round this, but it still doesn't allow me to open the draw. Forcing it causes complaints. I had a look at Top to see what is running but cant find the cultprit there - anyone know what is likely to cause this problem and how to fix it? Also did anyone get the WindowManagers to compile from this months LXF cover CD? I have tried fluxbox and IceWm, but neither got through make - fluxbox with a 'memory exhausted' message and IceWm with a huge list of warnings and errors about the taskbar etc. I was only looking for a lighter manager than XFce..... On the subject of bootable CD linux's I was impressed with the Knoppix based Freeduc one - it is in French by default but press F2 on boot and you can choose anyone of about 10 languages - including English. Shouldn't give the CS students too much difficulty. Glen .....from Britains most remote inhabited island......

Co-lo Server Advice Needed
by James Green 04 Feb '03

Hi all, Long time since I've posted here - long time since I've actually been subscribed for one reason or another... Many thanks in advance, James

A belated hello world!

As always, I've got ahead of myself. Posting to a mailing list before introducing myself... Sorry ;-) Anyway, I'm allegedly an IT professional (hehe), mainly dealing in enterprise java developments. I've had an interest in GNU/Linux mainly Debian for a couple of years, and have installed and run it on many different boxes. i386 (SMP), laptops, powerpc, sparc, sparc64. I've mainly used it as a personal OS, not much server related stuff apart from the usual home network with the usual diald, nfs, samba, apache, php, python etc...... I have a passing interest in the BSD's (sorry) and am getting to know OpenBSD at the moment. Not sure if I can be of much help to many people, but I'll stick my oar in when I can. Looking forward to contributing... (hopefully) Andrew
