exim

I'm about two steps from abandoning my SuSE linux install to my whizzy linuxfromscratch setup but I've hit a dead end. Exim just won't deliver mail properly... Everytime it gets mail it moans about not being able to get a lock on /var/mail/<whatever> (where I *plan* to store my messages), because of the 'permissions' and defers them. When installing exim I set up an 'exim' user and group and chown/chgrp 'ed /var/mail to that user (and the subdirectories) and in a fit of desparation did a chmod 666 without any success (that is the chmod worked but exim still didn't ::grin::) So....arrrggghhh! I've tried disabling locking altogether with no luck and I'm desperate. Can anyone help me pretty please? Cheers, BenE (also pine moans about /var/mail/<whatever> not being a 'selectable folder'. kppp gateway problem

Hi, I normally access the internet via a gateway on my network via my ethernet card, however, I have recently had a few occasions when I needed to temporarily access an alternative ISP using a modem. To keep things simple I thought I would use kppp to setup the dial-up connection. The modem connects to the dial-up ISP ok, establishes a ppp link, and correctly modifies /etc/resolv.conf to point at the dial-up ISP nameservers, however I cannot ping, or reach anything over the link. If I run tcpdump I instead see that the data is still being routed through my ethernet card rather than now going through the modem. i.e: [ian@swan ian]$ ping 80.225.253.50 PING 80.225.253.50 (80.225.253.50) from 192.168.1.232 : 56(84) bytes of data. --- 80.225.253.50 ping statistics --- 90 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss If I run netstat I see: [ian@swan ian]$ netstat -rn Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 80.225.252.38 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 40 0 0 ppp0 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 40 0 0 eth0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 U 40 0 0 lo 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 40 0 0 eth0 192.168.1.1 is my ethernet network's internet gateway machine. I have set this to "Default Gateway" rather than "Static Gateway" and have also selected "Assign the default route to this gateway". Question: What silly thing am I doing wrong (or have misconfigured) to prevent kppp changing the default gateway route from the ethernet card to the modem? Thanks, Ian. Linux Standards Base

In compiling my report about Linux for uni, I have merely skirted around the topic of LSB. I notice, for example, that there are only a few distros that have LSB compliance. I guess that the LSB is a good idea (in theory), since Linux has gone the way UNIX did by diversifying (perhaps too much)... Does anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems, also, that compliance means that RPM needs to be used? (That's insane IMHO, but I haven't tried APT-RPM). Any thoughts oh wise ones? ;)

Some extra information which, I think, may answer one of my own questions. I have just connected my laptop to the network and tried to print to the same remote printer. This works perfectly well. I also see in lpr.log: machine1 lpd[28252]: machine3.mynetwork requests recvjob timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading df file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: reading cf file for timicrol machine1 lpd[28252]: finished reading cf file for timicrol I don't see this when trying to print from the Mandrake machine (Machine2) so I suspect there is nothing going to the remote host (Machine1). Anything I could try on the Mandrake machine to try and sort this? (Anyone have a steam roller ?) Barry Samuels

My problem is still there. Everything I have tried hasn't worked. The machine from which I am trying to print (Mandrake 9.0) says that the remote host refused to accept the control file but the remote host (Debian Testing) doesn't show any signs of access or attempted access in the logs. Stopping the firewall on the remote host makes no difference. Is there any way that I can find out on which machine the problem lies? All other network functions perform properly. I think that the Mandrake machine is lying to me but I can't prove it. Barry Samuels

Problem No. 347 - Remote printing

Well - it feels like that sometimes. I have two machines networked. Machine1 (Debian Testing) has two printers - one on the parallel port and one on a USB port. I want to be able to print from Machine2 (Mandrake 9) to Machine1 but when I try I see a message in the logs 'Remote host did not accept the control file'. I see this whichever printer I try and use so I assume the problem is on Machine1 but I don't know how to correct it. Machine1 does have an /etc/hosts.lpd with the following entry: machine2.mynetwork There is an iptables firewall running (Endoshield) but I have tried after shutting down the firewall to no avail. All other networking functions correctly. Any advice would be appreciated. Barry Samuels

Problem installin Videolan Client

Hi all, I'm having trouble installing Videolan Client. I'm using Redhat 8.0 (2.4.18-19). I've installed packages for libdvdcss,libdvdread and libdvbpsi but when I try to install the vlc packages with the command 'rpm -Uvh vlc-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-mad-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm vlc-gnome-0.4.6-1.i586.rpm' I get the following error message :- error: failed dependencies: liba52.so.0 is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libavcodec.so is needed by vlc-0.4.6-1 libmad.so.0 is needed by vlc-mad-0.4.6-1 Can anyone help me out ?

Its superb but theres a few hitches Linux wise.. 1) You can only register using a windows box and IE5/5.5 and no firewall running! Once up and running turn off the modem for an hour or two and then you can DHCP on using Linux but make sure your firewalls tight and you passwords are shadowed - I left mine unsecure to see what happened and got hacked pretty quickly one an attempted takeover and once sendmail was so busy I had to cold boot! 2) I get 1.5M UDP (mainly who-has) on my port per week so watch out what you do with a tcpdump output on a small router. 3) I had to have the engineers round 3 times to get it sorted properly. Warning: With 600k you can browse everything useful in about a week! And those nasty sites with splash screens everywhere can download too fast for you to stop them so be ready to CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? wireless networking

Thanks to everyone who replied to my wireless network questions the card is up and running. I brought a DLink DWL-500 which has the prism2 chipset which seems to be the most supported chipset. Here's somethings I found useful. There is a RedHat RPM for setting up wireless network cards which was handy it can be found at prism2.unixguru.raleigh.nc.us and includes all the documentation as well. http://jgo.local.net/LinuxGuide/linux-ethernet.html for the basics of which scripts to edit to get your network going. Knoppix problem

I seem to be having problems with the ALUG mailing list. The message that I last sent wasn't returned to me as it usually is and I have received no mail from ALUG since. I see on the ALUG site archives that my message is there together with two replies for which I thank the people concerned. As far as the SCSI modules go I really can't remember if the module offered was ncr53c8xx.or sym53c8xx.o but it was the only one offered. SCSI adapters in both machines are Symbios adapters. Linux Anti-virus software.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced anti-virus product for Linux? Ideally we would want incoming and outgoing mail scanned and if possible HTTP/FTP downloads. This is for Red Hat 7.3 to protect PCs that will be using it as a mail/proxy server. Regards, Rob.

Knoppix problem

I have recently acquired a Knoppix CD. Neither of my two computers will boot from a CD so I made a boot floppy from the knoppix image provided. Booting from machine 1, a dual CPU with 512MB ram and all SCSI devices produces the message 'Can't find KNOPPIX file system, sorry' and I find I'm dumped into a *very* restrictive shell which, although it includes 'insmod', doesn't include 'ls' which is not very helpful. Insmoding the correct SCSI module gets me precisely nowhere and 'lsmod' produces nothing. Trying the 'expert' boot gives me a list of SCSI modules and having selected the appropriate module I get the same result. Booting from machine 2 with 128MB ram and also all SCSI gets me into the full Knoppix system without any problems. Although both machines use the same SCSI module, ncr53c8xx, one of the differences is that Machine 1 has a dual channel SCSI adapter which is fairly modern and Machine 2 has a single channel adapter which is some years old. Anyone have any experience of this? Regards Barry Samuels

Realplayer plugin for Mozilla uses 98% CPU!

I use Mozilla 1.0 on Debian Woody. I have installed RealPlayer8, and can run realplay fine. However, when I visit a website (such as the Radio 1 site, which is WHY I installed it, having used Windows for a project, I got rather addicted to John Peel's show again ;) ), realplay uses up to 98% of the CPU, meaning I have to kill the process. Typing about:plugins in the address bar gives: <snip> File name: /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/rpnp.so Mime Type Description Suffixes Enabled audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin RealPlayer Plugin Metafile rpm Yes <snip> So it seems to be installed OK. Anyone else found this? Anyone had any luck with RealOne (the newer one?) I can't seem to find ANY plugin bundled with it. It's quite irritating. Specially cos my housemate oversaw both install processes... "so it took u about 3 minutes in Windows, and a whole night and it still doesn't work in Linux..." RH8 - ISDN

Hello, I am using an ISDN terminal from BT that they provided when I signed up gor their home highway service. It is connected to my pc via USB. I have discovered that this ISDN terminal is based on the ST-5481 chipset, wich when I was using Suse 8.1 was easy enough to configure as I just had to select the generic ST-5481 driver. I have only just started using RH8 and am unable to work out how to get my ISDN working. Obviously I would like to stick with RH8 but with no net connection its going to be hard. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

First off: thanks for the replies! Wow! ALUG'ers do it again! :) Second: I'm investigating this problem for a uni project (for my MSc), so I guess the ALUG archives are going into my bibliography! ;) so, umm... these units are *fictional* lol, sorry! :) Third: I kinda thought on scrapping the RS-232 thing, since I'm fairly comfortable with ethernet and TCP/IP, but since these units have rs-232 (and they were duly mentioned by my tutors) I thought "maybe there's a reason ppl still linger with it". My first idea was to have two ipcop (www.ipcop.org) servers(firewalls) at either end of the connection to sort out a vpn over the POTS. Luckily we are dealing with temperature ranges of 5-30, so there's no real safety issue that can't wait the time it takes to dial up! Fourth: 'tis my job to write the programs to handle this, so that's all cool. Well... of to do some planning and decide whether SSH tunnels or a VPN would be better in this case. Thanks! Ricardo

Rs-232 and terminal servers

I'm investigating a solution. Basically I have a unit that must be remotely monitored. The unit itself has an rs-232 connection and ethernet too. However, for the tiny amount of data transfer needed (it sends temperatures), the rs-232 should suffice. I was thinking that I could attach this device to some sort of terminal server and then attach the server to the internet via a free dial-up, or perhaps a 64k leased line (it needs to be constantly monitored). Has anyone done such a thing? If so, any tips as to what to use as a terminal server? I realise this might be old hat to the rest of you, but I have no experience of this! TIA Ricardo
