Speedtouch Modem

I have a rather odd problem using the Alcatel Speedtouch USB Modem with the sourceforge USB speedtouch drivers http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch/ Running SuSE 8.0 with the latest (and all previous versions of the drivers) I have a stable connection, until I try and listen to a shoutcast stream using xmms. In this instance the connection will usually drop within 3 hours and always within 5. Downloading large files (say an ISO) from a fast mirror presents no problems. After the connection fails there are no errors reported in any of the syslogs. I am unable to restart the connection until I reboot the machine (even after killing all relevant processes and unmounting USB etc) I have posted a message on the Speedtouch mailing list, but had no response. Has anyone experienced this, or got any ideas as to what may be the cause. The machine also dual boots XP, under XP I have no such problem so I know my DSL line/Service is ok. Any help you be greatly appreciated Wayne

Problems with CD-Writing

Hi guys, I'm having problems writting CD's (It is an IDE cd writer Acer 20 10 40 soemthing) under linux (debian3 kernel 2.4.18). I can't seem to write a CD without getting errors on it (i.e. a diff with the orginal show differences). What seems to be happening is that I'm getting buffer underrun on the drive as it stops writing momentarily. I can't see why as I have cdrecord's fifo set to 16Mb and it doesn't drop below 90%, the writer is on it's own channel and even if I did get under-run the drive is supposed to have BURN-Proof which according to cd-record is switched on. I've tried slowing down the writing from 20x to 8x and still got a bad write (although I didn't notice the drive stop writing but I didn't watch for the whole 10 mins). I've also tried turning DMA on and off by using hdparm on the /dev/hd* entires (which seems to work even though I'm using ide-scsi) and turning it off means I can't spool data quick enough for 20x anyway. I was hoping someone would have a suggestion as to what I could do to stop this happening (appart from buy scsi!). However, I can't seem to kill any of the processes or unmount the nfs mount. I've restarted nfs-server and portmap. I can't umount /mntpoint , it says : Cannot MOUNTPROG RPC: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to receive umount: /ducati: device is busy It would be a shame to reboot the box as it has sat there running reliably and happily since last May. browser spoofing

It looks as if IE.. can be set to spoof by modifying the registry under W$. A lot of the other browsers can be set to spoof by modifying their .cfg or .ini type files - either through the browser or editing the file itself. Opera doesnt as yet appear to have that facility so perhaps if anyone knows of an open source proxy it might be worth seing if that can be modified to spoof. On the downside.. http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/sniffer/browser_type.html seems to be able to work out you inside leg measurement! *big* gentoo problem

Hi all, was using gentoo last night and did a emerge clean which should not remove any packages critical for operation of the machine and had it remove portage..... This has resulted in one very poorly box, does anyone have any idea how i could fix this? Is rpm included by default on the system? I can't check anything now as I am at work but I just wanted to read the docs to make sure I hadn't done anything stupid and now feel vindicated that I was not at fault. Anyhow if rpm is included in the base system would somebody mind building me an rpm of portage-2.0.38 please? If it isn't has anybody else got any good ideas? Thanks Adam

After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track! I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood. An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK. My view on this topic is that a new subscriber should be pointed towards the FAQ, a link to a guide on netiquette, and perhaps one of those Newbie guides (i.e. don't expect an answer if you give no info). In regards to off-topicness, people seem to self-regulate and move things to social when things go too far off topic. Sometimes, someone sends a mail nudging them in that direction (let's take this to social guy/gals). I have only been on the list for a year or so, and self-regulation in general seems to have worked fine. And for headers, the FAQ sums it up. For newbies especially, their LUG is essential for them to start using Linux (how many times has a newbie said "I can't get my modem working????"), so perhaps their only recourse is to use work e-mail. Or perhaps they can't afford a landline/net connection. ALUG is the friendliest LUG I have seen so far since it (as a sort of egregoric entity) doesn't alienate people. Let's keep it that way! SGI Indigo

Hi all, I have the opportunity to acquire an SGI Indigo (not an Indigo II) today for free with unknown specs (possibly an R4000 cpu) a quick search on google reveals that it will not run either Linux or NetBSD but will run Irix 6.5, can anybody think of any other uses for it? all reasonable suggestions welcome but will need them quick as it will most likely be dumped at some point tonight if I don't take it.... Well, by some strange chance I managed to get an assignment on Linux for my MSc course. ;) However, it is proving difficult to find reputable sources (i.e well known companies, academics). I've been explicitly told that "Bob's Linux page" won't be considered a reliable source of information! Does anyone know of any locations of good, critical whitepapers on Linux (such as the architecture of it, security, performance). There's plenty of good quality papers from people like M$ giving a very anti-linux view, but a desparate lack of reputable (for some reason they consider M$ reputable, but I can't change that!)sources for Linux. HTTP header spoofing/NTL broadband

Thanks again for the help with NTL broadband - now working with a RH6.1/120MP5/32Mram - getting a lot of 'who is' from NTL but thats fun! On another similar note: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27698.html They are presumably reading the HTTP headers to get the operating system/browser info so does anyone know of an easy way of spoofing them - I know at work our proxy effectively does it so is there anything out there that can con the world that I'm running IE5.5 on a W2K box?
