Fwd: Draft rules for discussion on a LUG list
by MJ Ray 24 Oct '02

24 Oct '02

Would people consider these guidelines worth adopting for the ALUG lists? If so, we'll add them to the web site. Date: Wed, 16 Oct 2002 22:25:52 CST From: Frederick Noronha <fred(a)bytesforall.org> Subject: Draft rules for discussion on a LUG list Just thought of sharing with you'll some draft rules which we find useful to implement and maintain the peace on our LUG list. If you have suggestions/ feedback, please pass them on. These rules were suggested, polished and put together by ShankarD, ArvindY, Siddharth, B2, Yunus, AshleyD and FN. #1. Talk politely on-list. If you can't be polite, please consider unsubscribing. #2. Please don't post any off-topic mail (non-GNU/Linux) to this list. #3. In your reply, quote only minimum relevant portions of the earlier mail. #4. Once a 'thread' is declared closed by the moderators, please don't insist on discussing it. #5. Personal mail, meant for just 2-3 persons on-list, should not be posted to everybody on the list. #6. Signatures and mast-heads should be of reasonable size. LOST tips, being informative and 'on topic' here, are welcome. #7. If material is available on the web, post the URL with a small description of the same. #8. Don't post only URLs without giving at least a brief idea of what the site contains. Some of our readers might not have speedy Net access. #9. Don't repeat the same posting more than once to this list. #10 If you find a good GNU/Linux-related newsletter which can be subscribed-to via the web, send in a brief synopsis of the newsletter and directions on how to subscribe to the same. #11 If you find something that would be of interest in a newsletter, send across the excerpts of the relevant snippets. Eg. a snippet or two from Freshmeat newsletter, rather than the entire posting. #12 Try to condense information and post. This is needed in view of the growing number of members on this list. #13 Rather than curse the darkness, light a lamp. If you feel this list could be better off with more useful information circulated through it, please post something that others would learn from. #14 Commercial postings (in moderate length), must necessarily go with the [COMMERCIAL] tag on the subject-line. Such postings should preferably be occasional, and not too frequent. #15 If anyone violates these rules (i) lodge a protest, if any, *only* with the moderators, and not directly to the list as a whole (ii) preferably send a copy to the person who's behaviour you see as violative to the letter and spirit of these rules. ########################################################################## # Send submissions for comp.os.linux.announce to: cola(a)stump.algebra.com # # PLEASE remember a short description of the software and the LOCATION. # # This group is archived at http://stump.algebra.com/~cola/ # ##########################################################################

Processor: Athlon 1.3Ghz RAM: 256Mb Motherboard: Gigabyte something or other with 686? chipset (I'll check tonight). It has a promise raid/ATA100 controller chip on it (which is supported by the kernel). I've tried the CDRW on this and the main ide channels. Hard disk is 16Gb which does ATA33 I think but don't know what make as I've not looked for a while (because it's worked fine for ages). Several more plays yesterday showed that simulations always seem to work OK. Writing seems to stop at random points through the process and I get a message which includes something about media being bad? (I'll grab the logs tonight). I've been using cheap CD's that I've had for a while so maybe they are dodgy, I also tried a different brand which didn't work although they aren't a known brand either. I'm going to get some better CD's today and give them a go. I managed to write a whole CD yesterday after I swapped the drives around on the IDE channels and turned on the always use DMA setting in my kernel. Although it wasn't the first attempt with the new settings. I've coming to the conclusion that it's my media that's crap. After I wrote a cd (or some of a cd) I looked at the cd under the light and I couldn't see the difference between it and a new, blank one. I'm sure you can usually see the track! I did discover that I had more luck when using Kreatecd rather than xcdroast but I don't understand why as they both use cdrecord under the hood. An interesting thing that I've discoverd about my drive is that it appears to stop writing and change speed at about 25% and 50%. Seems to be OK doing that though, guesss the burn proof is working OK. Anyway, I've got a few more things to try (media, different OS, different computer) and we'll see. > Adam JD _____________________________________________________________________ This message has been checked for all known viruses by the MessageLabs Virus Scanning Service

My view on this topic is that a new subscriber should be pointed towards the FAQ, a link to a guide on netiquette, and perhaps one of those Newbie guides (i.e. don't expect an answer if you give no info). In regards to off-topicness, people seem to self-regulate and move things to social when things go too far off topic. Sometimes, someone sends a mail nudging them in that direction (let's take this to social guy/gals). I have only been on the list for a year or so, and self-regulation in general seems to have worked fine. And for headers, the FAQ sums it up. For newbies especially, their LUG is essential for them to start using Linux (how many times has a newbie said "I can't get my modem working????"), so perhaps their only recourse is to use work e-mail. Or perhaps they can't afford a landline/net connection. ALUG is the friendliest LUG I have seen so far since it (as a sort of egregoric entity) doesn't alienate people. Let's keep it that way! (And for those complaining about my linewrap- this is my last post from this (broken) e-mail addy :) ) My 2p.... Ricardo **Insert 10 line sig here** -- Powered by Outblaze

No. That's why *I* wrote "guidelines" not "rules". Please do not change my words. The idea is to add this somewhere because it costs us little effort and avoids the long boring "please don't do that"/"but no-one said I couldn't"/"but you shouldn't"/"OK, now I know, but why don't you tell people?" arguments that periodically break out. [...] > not agree, I think Unix and Unix/Linux like alternative OS should be > included, also this rule would mean GNU/Hurd would be rated off topic, I think AIX, Solaris et al can go buy their own mailing lists, but general GNU discussion would be allowed by that. And there's always social. [...] > *should be* yes, but if you can't do anything about it i.e. boilerplate > from your employers then there is not to much we can do about it, just > hope to embrace and educate. I disagree on this. Many of those huge meaningless pseudo-legalese footers really are horrendously long and the list has enough subscribers that it's a lot of rubbish if it goes to everyone. If we can "encourage" people to get their mail systems fixed, that's a good thing. I know a lot of these are "obvious" to you or me, but having them posted somewhere can't hurt, can it? -- MJR

Hi all, I have the opportunity to acquire an SGI Indigo (not an Indigo II) today for free with unknown specs (possibly an R4000 cpu) a quick search on google reveals that it will not run either Linux or NetBSD but will run Irix 6.5, can anybody think of any other uses for it? all reasonable suggestions welcome but will need them quick as it will most likely be dumped at some point tonight if I don't take it.... Linux advocacy (ish)
by Ricardo Campos 23 Oct '02

23 Oct '02

Well, by some strange chance I managed to get an assignment on Linux for my MSc course. ;) However, it is proving difficult to find reputable sources (i.e well known companies, academics). I've been explicitly told that "Bob's Linux page" won't be considered a reliable source of information! Does anyone know of any locations of good, critical whitepapers on Linux (such as the architecture of it, security, performance). There's plenty of good quality papers from people like M$ giving a very anti-linux view, but a desparate lack of reputable (for some reason they consider M$ reputable, but I can't change that!)sources for Linux. Any help would be appreciated, esp. sources that are relatively independent. TIA Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

HTTP header spoofing/NTL broadband
by tom potts 22 Oct '02

22 Oct '02

Thanks again for the help with NTL broadband - now working with a RH6.1/120MP5/32Mram - getting a lot of 'who is' from NTL but thats fun! On another similar note: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27698.html They are presumably reading the HTTP headers to get the operating system/browser info so does anyone know of an easy way of spoofing them - I know at work our proxy effectively does it so is there anything out there that can con the world that I'm running IE5.5 on a W2K box? RE: Returning unused copies of Wiindows
by Michael Sage 22 Oct '02

22 Oct '02

The problem is the software is considered as much a part of the package as the hardware. You don't buy a computer from Dell without a processor, so why should you be "competent" to install a processor or indeed an operating system. I also seem to remember M$ threatening OEMs a few months ago about shipping a PC without an OS, they called it an illegal machine and wanted all OEMs to report it too them immediately, with this kind of thing is it any wander OEMs wont refund anything on the OS. Unfortunately this is the way it is. I recommend buying a machine with Windows 98 rather than 2k/XP that way you can either give the license to a local school (although this too is deemed illegal by MS as they have decided that an OEM licence is bound to hardware, go one prove it! :o) ) or similar. Any way, that's the way I see it. Regards, Michael P.S I don't think I can make the 3rd.

Me!
by Michael Sage 22 Oct '02

22 Oct '02

As Requested in the joining mail here is a short piece about me. Interest in Linux started way back in 1997/98 when I worked for a small ISP. Worked there part time, then when I finished college went back full time, general basic Linux admin (apache, qmail, user management, support etc). Moved to a small software house in Norwich, lost my linuxy roots, although, during this time built and used Linux Firewalls (2.2 and 2.4 varitents) and web servers. 2002 moved to Pitman Training in Norwich, in the process of migrating a Novell network to Linux, also in process of maintaining Linux Firewalls (hardcore and Mandrake firewall edition) as well as setting up a DNS server for a local company in the near furture. As well as all of this in the process of getting Linux certification instated to Pitman, including RHE, Linux+ and LCA quailifications. Still under the impression that Linux isnt quite ready for the desktop, although it is nearly there. Fav Distro: Slackware. There thats me! :o) Kind Regards, Michael Sage Technical and Network Manager -- Pitman Norwich Tel: 01603 619769 2 Recorder Road Fax: 01603 619769 Norwich, NR1 1NR

Returning unused copies of Windows
by Andrew Bayliss 22 Oct '02

22 Oct '02

My girlfriend has just bougt an Acer laptop through Dabs and is planning to run Debian on it, and is fairly peeved that she has had to pay for a useless copy of Windows XP. I remember hearing a while ago about Linux users returning unused (i.e. never booted) copies of Windows (I think this was around the 95/98 time) that they had been forced to buy with computers, usually laptops. Does anyone know if this is still possible under the Windows XP EULA? -- Andrew

UKFSN is an Internet Service Provider with a difference - all of the profits from the operation will be donated to fund Free Software projects in the UK. Each month UKFSN will release a public statement clearly showing how much income was raised during the preceeding month and how much is cost to run the service. The surplus will then be paid to the Association for Free Software (http://www.affs.org.uk/) who have agreed to handle the distribution of the money raised. The UK Free Software Network offers all the standard services one expects from an ISP including 0845 dialup access, email, web hosting and usenet. These standard offerings are beefed up with the inclusion of perl, PHP and python and MySQL support for the web hosting and extensive SPAM control measures in the email service. The service is not just for geeks however. As well as subscription free Internet access and services UKFSN.ORG offers professional hosting options for businesses and domain registration services. Business users will especially appreciate the WorldPay payment system perl module that has been written to support ecommerce transactions by UKFSN hosted sites. UKFSN is being run by Jason Clifford, the person behind Definite Linux - the now defunct British Linux distribution. The UKFSN website is http://www.ukfsn.org/ info(a)ukfsn.org for more information. Hi, I need to compile a driver so that I can get the network to run on my laptop. Being a newbie when it comes to compiling (except for kernels), could somebody please explain what kernel headers are? The instructions say unpack the tarball and run make (you need kernel headers for this, with /usr/src/linux pointing to them). I understand the first bit but not the rest!! Any help would be appreciated!!! Thanks Simon

The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. .bashrc or .bash_profile? (poss gentoo specific?)
by Ricardo Campos 20 Oct '02

20 Oct '02

OK. Silly but annoying problem. In gentoo, all I get is sh-2.05a$ as my prompt in Eterm. Before I run X, I do get the familiar ricardo@hostname directory$ I want it back, since I'm a forgetful soul, and it would save me all that typing of pwd. But adding the suitable PS1 variable to .bash_profile doesn't help. Also, the ls alias that gives me different colours for directories, executables etc doesn't work in a terminal (not just eterm). The course is called "Computer Architecture and Communications", so I'm gonna use kernel.org for the fact that the kernel has been ported to Intel, SPARC, Alpha, etc. I found the SAMBA article (via samba.org) however, I haven't yet found proper figures yet. I've also found some stuff on the relative benefits of Linux's TCP/IP stacks performance, but again, summaries with no hard data. grrr. :-/ Thanks for the help! But not apparently if you are a private customer. To see my point go to dell.co.uk, configure and buy a Inspiron 8200 Laptop. XP Home and XP Pro are the only OS options FreeDOS no longer seems to be an option. Neither is the "No Operating system installed" that they offered a few years ago. In addition to this I have to select either Works, Office XP SBE or Office XP Pro. Again no option for none of the above.
