Loaded the cpia module, made the video devices... says no such device /dev/video0 (altho it IS there). Anyone else got a Creative Webcam (USB) to work? :( I wanted to use gnomemeeting to talk to my sis in Canada... looks like I'll have to boot into Winblows to use it.. *boohoo* Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

When I start xawtv it says that /dev/video0 does not exist. This is true, but does anyone know how to make that device (with mknod) and make sure it is pointing to the webcam (it's a USB one)? Redhat 7.x RPMs : CDRs anyone?
by James - listmail 07 Sep '02

07 Sep '02

I'll be at CB2, Cambridge on Sunday. Have some spare time to burn CDRs for interested parties on Saturday, probably. Intel architecture and sub arch types only. Happy to hand stuff over to folk willing to collect in person. I don't have packaging materials to operate a postal service, and don't particularly want to spend money and time doing that. One Good Thing [tm] about all the disk archiving that I've done for the first week of September is to collate all the Redhat 7.x Update RPMS, and other goodies that I've built recently. For folks wanting to update a system from a new install using the original RedHat install CDs, but no ( or slow ) internet access - better to use a CD update archive. The binary update rpms (just) fit on one 700M CDR. Too early for the Redhat 7.2 backport rpms of KDE 3.0.3 that I'm still trying to build and resolve dependancies upon, BUT some other rpm packaged goodies available are: 1) selinux SELDI binary rpms for the 2002082308 release that can be rpm installed in a standard RedHat 7.2 system includes big archive of email from the NSA listserver, and documents / saved articles. 2) postgresql 7.2.2 built for RedHat 7.2 i586 and i686 3) snort IDS with a recent ruleset ( 31st Aug ) I can burn CDRs for anyone willing to compensate me for doing so ( 700M / 80min ) email me privately if interested, please. ( Within reason ) I am willing to mix n' match components to squeeze the number of CDs needed. Sizes of components: ( first column current packages; second column are obsoleted packages, MegaBytes ) RH7.2 Update RPMS: i386 469 426 i586 21 61 i686 50 179 athlon 21 81 noarch 90 0 SRPMS 546 316 images 7 - RH7.3 Update RPMS: i386 180 171 i586 25 37 i686 57 112 athlon 25 49 SRPMS 190 102 selinux : 462 snort : 11 postgres: 24 nmap: 14 Just the stuff that I have to hand. I can probably collate all the KDE 3.0.3 SRPMS from a RedHat 7.2 backporting site, but I haven't had time to resolve dependancy issues and build binaries successfully. Some way to go before all that is operational, and fit to install. These weigh in at about 83 MBytes AFAIR. Anyone else been working on RedHat 7.2 KDE 3.0.3 RPMS by any chance? If you have, and know exactly how to resolve all the missing deps, do tell! -- James To reply by private email DONT delete the "nospam" in Reply To or From header addresses!

Webalizer and stdin problem
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 04 Sep '02

04 Sep '02

I want Webalizer to take its input from STDIN by using something like cat various*.log|webalizer -c /path/to/webalizer.conf I find that if I enable DNS lookups, which I want, Webalizer does all the lookups and then stops, displaying the number of addresses resolved, but does not produce any output. If I disable the DNS lookups it produces all the expected output but, of course, no resolved addresses. If I cat the log files to another single file, which I don't want to do, Webalizer will do DNS lookups and produce the expected output if this file is specified as the log file. Does anyone know how I can get Webalizer to do both using STDIN? Regards Barry Samuels

Linux wins!
by Kelly Ash 02 Sep '02

02 Sep '02

Once again (can't count the times in the past 6 months alone) Bills creation has taken a dive and I'm done. What I'd like to know now is how differently an install is if it's going to be a Linux only machine? I didn't do any partitioning for the current installation (dual with Win98se - each having their own hd) and let Linux go about it's business. I want to wipe both hd's and start again from scratch with NO Win anything on here. Due to Malcolms kind offer, I'll be installing the ProSuite edition of Mandrake 8.2 and was curious as to how Linux will see/use 2 empty hd's. As always, any pointers and tips thankfully accepted!!

There is interest in someone updating fastforward to support SSLing a port forward. There's already SSL support in its stream library, so shouldn't be too hard. MySQL Installation
by David Crease 01 Sep '02

01 Sep '02

I installed the binary of MySQL 3.23.51 according to the recipe, I believe. However, when I attempted to start the mysql daemon it gives the message that the daemon is starting immediately followed by a timed message "mysqld ended". Checking that the daemon is not, in fact, running with mysqladmin -p ping gives error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/tmp/mysql.sock' exists! ls shows the socket is there. Another look for the daemon with ps -aux |grep mysql did not show mysqld to be running. Suggestions, please. Memories of Religious Instruction lessons many decades ago seem to indicate that some people were trouble with plagues of daemons. I do not recall anyone being bothered by the absence of daemons. Perhaps this is a rich vein for theological research. With suitable funding from the Vatican, Canterbury, etc there might be a career opportunity for someone. Dave Crease

normal user access to pppd
by Ricardo Campos 30 Aug '02

30 Aug '02

At the moment I have to su and then run the pon script to go online. That's fine for me, but my machine will soon be multi-user, and I don't want the others to have root's password! What permissions would I need to do to so that normal users could simply type pon to connect? On a similar note, my digital camera downloads pics via the serial port /dev/ttyS0. Unfortunately I have to be root to do this. I have changed the permissions on that device before, but it keeps changing it back???? Weird! What's my best option to solve these probs? permissions on the port/pppd/pon? or set up something with sudo? TIA Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Re: [Alug] Mandrake install worked!
by Syd Hancock 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Hi Russell Congratulations - have fun. I'm just a dabbler, by contrast with most people on the list who seem to be IT professionals. I had a similar experience to you - I was astonished to find a desktop after doing my first install! Not at all what I had expected from the recommended Linux books. All the same, the command line is essential - especially being able to switch to a different console when things go a bit wonky... Some things are easiest done with a GUI - like file copying etc, as you mention - many things can really only be done, or are best done, at the command line. Basically there are a huge number of things to learn and you will just have to pick them up as you go along. Mandrake tries to make it easy and approachable for the inexperienced user - the more experienced find it frustrating for that reason but for many people a lot of hand-holding and being able to do fun things right from the start is a good place to begin. But at some point we all have to start reading and studying and trying things out and breaking them and then trying to find out how to fix them <grin>. I do suggest that you look at the Mandrake support sites, especially <http://www.mandrakeuser.org> which has a lot of helpful, detailed, easy to understand information in the document section. They are useful for any inexperienced linux user, not just MDK users, as are the Suse and Redhat online support. The mandrake user and refrence guides are also invaluable. Best wishes, ask away when you need help - as long as you're making some effort to work things out for yourself then people will be very glad to help. Regards Syd

Stalham Venue : Hope Remains
by Keith Watson 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Just had some more feedback from the powers that be. 1stly they asked me to pass on their apologies once more (I think they are a bit embarrassed they didn't check sooner) for the cancellation at short notice. They are keen to show support for the open source movement, as much of our next generation systems are based on open source Apache/Java/XML technologies(s) (or commercial variants of, where necessary). We're currently are looking at our 3rd party insurance to see if and how the conditions can be varied. Funnily enough one step that will help is if we restrict access to some parts of the site (at the moment once you're in you're in). This will mean putting some internal locks on some of the doors and reviewing the zoning of the alarm system so we can selectively isolate those areas we want to be accessible. Presumably the insurers feel that if an area is inaccessible then the liability for any accidents is eliminated! So, don't give up hope just yet! Mandrake install worked!
by Russell Ward 28 Aug '02

28 Aug '02

Hi there, again. Just to tell you that I appear to have a working Linux system now, after previous postings regarding problems with the install. Briefly, I did replace my computer with a newer one, 64MB RAM and 4GB HD. Then just put in the CD and boot floppy, under Win98, and it worked at the second attempt, with a neat GUI install. A couple of things I found offputting as a Linux newbie: No-one explains the partitioning process, you seem to have to know about that already. The 'auto-partition' offers several partitions under Linux, why is that? I wanted, and got, just one, mount point '/', alongside a Win98 partition. Also, it is so much easier to learn Linux using a GUI rather than commandline/console, such as browsing the file structure as well as opening various apps. Sounds obvious, but this doesn't seem to be emphasised in the literature, where commandlines and editing config files abound. I'm glad I persisted, though productivity so far has gone down (damn 'Asteroids'!). I may eventually have some questions regarding C++ possibilities. Until then, thanks to everyone again for your earlier help. However, I couldn't disagree more with the GUI thing. For a newbie, the command line stuff is a far steeper learning curve but once you are even halfway up the cliff you have a much better understanding of what is actually going on in your linux system. I'm renowned for doing things the hard way, however. Jenny.
