September 1st Stalham Cancelled
by Keith Watson 27 Aug '02

27 Aug '02

Apologies to all but I'll have to cancel the meeting this Sunday. The management here at Stalham have asked me to pass on their apologies also. Apparently there's a problem with our public liability insurance, or to be more accurate the terms of it have changed since we last used the site for something like this a couple of years back. Very sorry about the late notice. Keith

Brother network printers
by Paul 27 Aug '02

27 Aug '02

Hi Folks Picked up a Brother HL1660 printer recently complete with a network interface.. Having no end of fun getting it to print anything. I have the IP address and the subnet mask set as 192.168.0.118 & 255.155.155.0 and can ping the thing from any machine, but it will not print! The print queue on the computer is set up for a remote printer, but any jobs are just held in the queue. Help. Regards, Paul.

Weekly IRC reminder

This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. IMAP server setup
by Ashley 25 Aug '02

25 Aug '02

I want to centralise the storing of my email for my 5 machine LAN. So, after a little online research, I found setting up an IMAP server appeared to be the answer. However, following further investigation, I can't find any tutorials to assist me in doing this. What I want to do is: * Collect email from multiple pop3 addresses * Check email for viruses and automatically bounce virus infected emails * Filter out junk mail into a 'checking' account * Filter email into different IMAP accounts based on to: from: subject:, etc * Further filter the email going into the IMAP account into certain directories (this is a client or server issue?) * Read email on several machines (using IMAP-compatible client) * Reply to, forward to different IMAP accounts, etc What the easiest way to achieve this? Furthermore, in contrasting POP3 and IMAP, I have the following issues: * Are outgoing messages for an IMAP account stored with the IMAP account, or on the local machine? * What method is used for sending the email to the outside world for IMAP? Currently I download from POP3 and send via my ISP's SMTP server. * As the email is stored centrally, I would assume global searching is straight forward. Are their tools available, or can I 'grep' the mailboxes? -- Ashley T. Howes Ph.D. http://www.ashleyhowes.com "When all the animals of this world are gone, man will die of loneliness"

java bug problem
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

Hi list, I've just installed j2re1.3 on a box running debian potato with 2.2.19 and it won't run, brings up the error code 4F530E43505002CC http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4512651.html I've installed the same package in the same way (apt-get) on a second box running the same software. This one runs the same files just fine. Google has many reports of this problem but no answers. I realise this is a feeble and flimsy posting from which I expect to have someone miraculously whisk up a solution, but can anyone shed any light? I can try to capture the output of the error report if it is useful. Thanks, Jenny.

The error was between chair and keyboard. I had not altered the $FILEPATH variable in one of the files for its new location, which was what was making it grumble. Sorry to waste time (specially mine). Round of biccies on me at next meeting. Jen.

Meeting facilities for members with disabilities
by Keith Watson 23 Aug '02

23 Aug '02

Would it be useful if we indicated the ease of access at the various meeting venues for any members with disabilities? For example at Stalham the meeting room is one the 1st floor but there is a stair lift. There are also suitable toilet facilities on the same floor as the meeting room. As far as I'm aware all the doors are standard width (some are double doors) so presumably should be able to accommodate wheelchairs. Something else that might be of help is a list of people who would be willing to provide transport (assuming ordinary cars etc are suitable) for people who might not normally be able to attend (perhaps a web page link off of the Meetings page?) meetings. Are there any graphic artist types out there who can put together some artwork for the labels and jewel cases for the Debian CDs (1 to 7) and for Knoppix? There are some samples on the Debian site for jewel cases for the 1st CD. It would be nice to have something on the labels that said the CDs were copied by an ALUG member. The date for your diaries is Saturday 14th September 2002, 12noon until 5pm. Doubtless to say, there will also be a session in some pub afterwards, should you not be able to make it during the day. We will be meeting in the New Cavendish Street campus of Westminster University, this is in the shadow of the BT Tower, nearest tube stations are Great Portland Street and Goodge Street. You will find a map at [ http://www.wmin.ac.uk/static/maps.asp ] For this meeting, and all the future meetings, we have the use of the Universities 'large' lecture theatre, the network lab and the Multimedia lab. For those that went last time, your comments and criticisms were justified about the smaller theatre being too small. We are still finalising the details of the talks, so these will be posted to the web site soon, <http://gllug.linux.co.uk>. The network lab - We will use the network lab, this month, for rolling demo installations. The multimedia room - This will be used as a chat area, away from the lectures. This means booking Nelson Court Common Room B (which doesn't even have net access) would cost £157 for a day. So, I'm afraid that's the 1st Sept shot in the b*ks. using the Xmono server
by Glen Tyler 21 Aug '02

21 Aug '02

I have a small i486 with a black and white screen. For obvious reasons I want to use the mono server in my xconfiguration, but I cannot seem to get it to work. The machine is running RH6.0 (thanks to who sent me the disc -Craig I think, but not sure), during install it always loads the SVGA server, due to the card definition (Cirrus Logic GD5422). However editing the X11 config file to remove all the screens that use the SVGA and VGA16 server result in the error - failure to connect to X server. I have Xmono installed. The reason I need the mono server is that under the lynx browser I cant see any of the links as the display is using a bpp depth of 8. any ideas? by the way I managed to get the LXF slackware 8.1 disc to install on my 486 with 16MB ram - now that is a distro!
