I noticed the following being thrown out of the office adjacent to ours and, whilst I don't have use for them myself, figured I could find a worthy home for them. All are boxed and un-opened, and most appear to contain manuals. 5 x ProSuite edition 8.2 (8 CD's + 1 DVD) 3 x Standard edition 8.2 (3 CD's) 2 x Standard edition 8.1 (3 CD's) 1 x ProSuite edition 8.1 (9 CD's + 1 DVD) 1 x Power pack edition 8.1 (7 CD's) 1 x Standard edition 8.0 (3 CD's) If anyone would like to collect these from me near Sudbury and distribute them at the next meeting, or if anyone can suggest another worthy cause in the region, please let me know. I'm using vnc on windows box to view linux screen: had to install xvncserver, then access it using "run vncviewer" from windows, entering port [ipaddress]:1 - am prompted for password then it brings up screen using blackbox. How it works is a mystery to me, as I haven't done anything to the /etc/vnc.conf file at all. Doubt this helps, as always! Jenny.

using the Xmono server

I have a small i486 with a black and white screen. For obvious reasons I want to use the mono server in my xconfiguration, but I cannot seem to get it to work. The machine is running RH6.0 (thanks to who sent me the disc -Craig I think, but not sure), during install it always loads the SVGA server, due to the card definition (Cirrus Logic GD5422). However editing the X11 config file to remove all the screens that use the SVGA and VGA16 server result in the error - failure to connect to X server. I have Xmono installed. The reason I need the mono server is that under the lynx browser I cant see any of the links as the display is using a bpp depth of 8. any ideas? by the way I managed to get the LXF slackware 8.1 disc to install on my 486 with 16MB ram - now that is a distro! Although it's not strictly GPL, an interesting bit of software if only because they're trying to break out of the Windows/Mac model. I'm not that sure they've succeeded. lm_sensors, sensord and temperatures

I have, at last, managed to get lm_sensors working on my Tyan Thunder K7 dual processor board and I am monitoring the results with Gkrellm. This gives me two levels of warning. (1) Chips are getting hot - sound the alarm and (2) Turn the thing off before it cooks. Can anyone tell me what temperature values I should set for these and ditto for the chassis temperature? As I have also managed to get this machine to turn itself off after shutting down (shutdown -h now) I can also set Gkrellm to activate this at the higher temperature of the two levels. I can also run sensord to log temperature levels but have had to disable it because it keeps logging a chassis intrusion detection alarm. Although the board has a header for this it is not connected. Anyone know a way of disabling this? Many thanks Barry Samuels

Any old harddrives?

I'm putting together a scratch system for a friend of mine with somewhat limited means. To date I've got everything but a hard drive. Has anyone got an old 2Gb, 3Gb or similar sized hard drive going spare? QEmacs, a surprising editor

I just downloaded and installed the qemacs editor. (Debian: apt-get install qemacs.) If you open an HTML file with it, it renders it and lets you edit the rendered version a bit. You can get at the source for more serious changes with M-x xml-mode, but it surprised me that a sub-200k editor contains an CSS-based HTML renderer. Amazing, eh? It also can edit utf-8 (multilingual) with a variety of input methods taken from Yudit. It's still early days for this editor (and I've filed some bugs against it), but it's quite promising and I thought I'd let you all know. Can't start Gnome-terminal with non-root user.

I finally got round to setting up another user account (other than root) on my scratch built system. Most things are working except for Gnome-terminal. It starts fine for root but crashes with a message about changes to the 2.2.x kernel and checking ptys. Given that it works fine for root I think this is a red-herring. I think this is a file permissions problem. I've scanned round the web and found a couple of hits that suggested some file permissions that need to be set. I've checked these and they are ok. Any suggestions for how I might go about tracking this down (and yes I know I could cure this by installing a 'proper' distro, but what will I learn from that? - don't answer that, it's rhetorical :o) ) ____________ BAROMETER, n.
