lm_sensors, sensord and temperatures
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 19 Aug '02

19 Aug '02

I have, at last, managed to get lm_sensors working on my Tyan Thunder K7 dual processor board and I am monitoring the results with Gkrellm. This gives me two levels of warning. (1) Chips are getting hot - sound the alarm and (2) Turn the thing off before it cooks. Can anyone tell me what temperature values I should set for these and ditto for the chassis temperature? As I have also managed to get this machine to turn itself off after shutting down (shutdown -h now) I can also set Gkrellm to activate this at the higher temperature of the two levels. I can also run sensord to log temperature levels but have had to disable it because it keeps logging a chassis intrusion detection alarm. Although the board has a header for this it is not connected. Anyone know a way of disabling this? Many thanks Barry Samuels

Any old harddrives?

I'm putting together a scratch system for a friend of mine with somewhat limited means. To date I've got everything but a hard drive. Has anyone got an old 2Gb, 3Gb or similar sized hard drive going spare? QEmacs, a surprising editor
by MJ Ray 16 Aug '02

16 Aug '02

I just downloaded and installed the qemacs editor. (Debian: apt-get install qemacs.) If you open an HTML file with it, it renders it and lets you edit the rendered version a bit. You can get at the source for more serious changes with M-x xml-mode, but it surprised me that a sub-200k editor contains an CSS-based HTML renderer. Amazing, eh? It also can edit utf-8 (multilingual) with a variety of input methods taken from Yudit. It's still early days for this editor (and I've filed some bugs against it), but it's quite promising and I thought I'd let you all know. QEmacs is at http://fabrice.bellard.free.fr/qemacs/ Yudit is at http://www.yudit.org/

Can't start Gnome-terminal with non-root user.
by Keith Watson 14 Aug '02

14 Aug '02

I finally got round to setting up another user account (other than root) on my scratch built system. Most things are working except for Gnome-terminal. It starts fine for root but crashes with a message about changes to the 2.2.x kernel and checking ptys. Given that it works fine for root I think this is a red-herring. I think this is a file permissions problem. I've scanned round the web and found a couple of hits that suggested some file permissions that need to be set. I've checked these and they are ok. Any suggestions for how I might go about tracking this down (and yes I know I could cure this by installing a 'proper' distro, but what will I learn from that? - don't answer that, it's rhetorical :o) ) ____________ BAROMETER, n. To: gllug(a)linux.co.uk Yes, I know it's short notice... For a couple of years, there have been discussions of a possible GLLUG picnic at Bletchley Park, a genuine geek pilgrimage site - all credit to John Hearnes, who's proposed and pushed the idea in the past... I'm proposing that if you're not doing anything else next Sunday (the 18th), we get together there for the GLLUG picnic '02. Why that date? Three reasons come to mind: They're having an Airbourne Forces weekend that weekend, which means paratrooper and commando displays, and a WWII overflight on the Sunday; It's the same weekend as the Picn*x11 Linux picnic (www.linuxpicnic.org) in California - if we decide on that date quickly, we should be able to get some publicity out of that; No time like the present - the weather is pretty variable at the moment, so thats no help in picking a date, and I know people will be on holiday, but at least if we pick a date, it might actually *happen* this year! Apparently there might be engineering works which would affect the trains, but barring that, I propose those who want to take the train meet at Euston at maybe 11ish on the Sunday, and those who want to go under their own steam aim to meet us there at around 12? I've called and provisionally booked us in - I can call and cancel if no-one else can make it, or if it's a silly idea, or I can call and confirm if there's going to be 10-15 people or more there. I'd want to know by, say, Tuesday next week... We can discuss it on-list, or on my Wiki (@wiki.vmlinuz.org) - if you're a confirmed yes, add your name to the BletchleyParkInterestList there. For what it's worth, I'd say families are welcome - trying to make it *slightly* less geeky :-) For anyone who doesn't know about Bletchley Park (shame on you!) there's oodles of info at www.bletchleypark.org.uk - yes, it's a pretty crappy-looking site, but remember to hold your complaining off until we get there... There would be an entrace fee of £6 (£5 concessions) and they don't do group prices :-( Let's make it happen this year! :-) Cheers Richard - -- Gllug mailing list - Gllug(a)linux.co.uk http://list.ftech.net/mailman/listinfo/gllug - ----- End forwarded message ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------- The UK Lugmaster Mailing List http://www.lug.org.uk/lugmasters/lugmaster.php - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ------- End of Forwarded Message --__--__-- Message: 2 Reply-To: <keith.watson(a)kewill.com> From: "Keith Watson" <keith.watson(a)kewill.com> To: "ALUG Announce \(E-mail\)" <announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk> Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 13:15:27 +0100 Subject: [Alug Announce] In memoriam, Edsger W. Need advice for laptop install
by kmweb 12 Aug '02

12 Aug '02

Hello, I have a laptop with windows Home-XP (Which I find the most irritating of all the Windows OS's that I've ever used), the laptop has a 18 Gig disk drive. I want to repartition the drive, to keep the XP in a half the drive and install Linux on the other half. I'm not a Linux expert but want to use the laptop to get further Linux experience. In the past I have purchased various partition software manager's each time Microsoft changed something but having done that 3 times now I wonder if there is any alternative (My latest version was partition magic 4.0 which won't handle the new format NTFS that XP has been loaded with). Can anyone suggest any free software or any techniques for safely repartitioning the Laptop without reformating the existing XP partition? Thanks Karl Middleton

I probably need something with a web based front end, otherwise this would have been ideal (plus debian has a package for it). Thanks, Jenny.

Debian CDs

Here's one for the Debian buffs out there (starter for 10 :o) ) Is it worth me downloading a set of the Debian (woody?) CD images (via the fast link here at work) or will it be easier to copy someone else's set? Follow-up questions; if (a) download, how do I get a jigdo image onto a CD? (straight copy or is there a special utility?) if (b) copy CDs, where and when? Regards, Keith ____________ 'I can see nobody on the road.' said Alice.
