QEmacs, a surprising editor

I just downloaded and installed the qemacs editor. (Debian: apt-get install qemacs.) If you open an HTML file with it, it renders it and lets you edit the rendered version a bit. You can get at the source for more serious changes with M-x xml-mode, but it surprised me that a sub-200k editor contains an CSS-based HTML renderer. Amazing, eh? It also can edit utf-8 (multilingual) with a variety of input methods taken from Yudit. It's still early days for this editor (and I've filed some bugs against it), but it's quite promising and I thought I'd let you all know. Can't start Gnome-terminal with non-root user.

I finally got round to setting up another user account (other than root) on my scratch built system. Most things are working except for Gnome-terminal. It starts fine for root but crashes with a message about changes to the 2.2.x kernel and checking ptys. Given that it works fine for root I think this is a red-herring. I think this is a file permissions problem. I've scanned round the web and found a couple of hits that suggested some file permissions that need to be set. I've checked these and they are ok. Any suggestions for how I might go about tracking this down (and yes I know I could cure this by installing a 'proper' distro, but what will I learn from that? - don't answer that, it's rhetorical :o) ) ____________ BAROMETER, n. Need advice for laptop install

Hello, I have a laptop with windows Home-XP (Which I find the most irritating of all the Windows OS's that I've ever used), the laptop has a 18 Gig disk drive. I want to repartition the drive, to keep the XP in a half the drive and install Linux on the other half. I'm not a Linux expert but want to use the laptop to get further Linux experience. In the past I have purchased various partition software manager's each time Microsoft changed something but having done that 3 times now I wonder if there is any alternative (My latest version was partition magic 4.0 which won't handle the new format NTFS that XP has been loaded with). Can anyone suggest any free software or any techniques for safely repartitioning the Laptop without reformating the existing XP partition? Thanks Karl Middleton

Netcraft has a survey of which http servers are being used (i.e. IIS or Apache). Does anyone know of a site that breaks down webservers by the OS??? Linux Boot Scripts

While browsing Mr.Gooch's website for devfs info. I noticed that he has developed a replacement set of boot scripts. <http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/linux/boot-scripts/index.html> I'm currently using the SysV format scripts as I prefer it to the BSD format (mainly because the SysV seems to be better structured and organised), does anyone have any strong views on SysV vs. BSD? postgresql problems

Hullo all, I just installed postgres, and when I try to run it it is looking for /usr/lib/postgresql/bin/psql to execute the program. The path it should be looking for is /usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql. I presume that: psql points to /usr/bin/psql which is a link to pg_wrapper, which is a binary file, which presumably has the full path. How would I alter this? Thanks. Jenny.

Debian CDs

Here's one for the Debian buffs out there (starter for 10 :o) ) Is it worth me downloading a set of the Debian (woody?) CD images (via the fast link here at work) or will it be easier to copy someone else's set? Follow-up questions; if (a) download, how do I get a jigdo image onto a CD? Hi All, Has anyone any experience with "touxdoux" project manager - still in beta stages but by all accounts sort of usable? Can anyone recommend any other web-based free project management packages for linux? Thanks, Jenny.

I suspect it means the path to the actual files on the sever, or maybe an index of the files contained on the server. i.e. the index to tell your computer *Where* to look for them. (actually, by RTFM'ing I see that they do indeed have index files that end in .cz on the servers). So, recap: If you want to find rpm's on the net, then use these 2 links. i.e. go to these links in your web browser, find the rpm on the web site, and download it through the web browser. www.freshrpms.net (these may/may not work with mandrake very well) www.rpmfind.net Secondly, there is the mandrake software manager, which can automatically download a list of mirror sites from which you can find RPM's. This is probably your best option. I haven't used Mandrake for almost a year now, I don't remember the exact buttons to press, but I'm sure a little time spent on it will help you find it. If not, there is excellent documentation on the Mandrake website, you may have missed the section on installing packages in the User Guide the 1st time round. e.g. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/x11454.html#AEN11465 I think all I did was to add a security update source, and that had the other rpms on it as well. Try it, it's not going to hurt! http://www.mandrakeuser.org has lots of documentation that is worth reading. Once you read the manual and understand it, all you need to do is find some mirrors with rpm packages on, although IIRC, the security update did that for me. Most of my little network uses old 10BaseT network cards however I recently purchased a 10/100 hub and notice that the latest network cards I have ordered are also rated 10/100. I was therefore wondering a few things: Firstly, are 10MHz and 100MHz (on a 10/100 NIC) two discrete speeds or could the NIC/hub pair negotiate an intermediate speed if that is all my dodgey D.I.Y network cabling can handle? (i.e. is it possible for a 10/100 link to run at say 50MHz?) If so then is this intermediate speed negotiated only when the link is first made or will it dynamically drift higher and lower from minute to minute? Secondly, to satisfy my curiosity, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any little Linux programs which I can run in the background to dynamically monitor the speed at which my PC's network card is actually running. Thirdly I notice a couple of the latest NIC's I have ordered (3Com905CX-TX-M) are "managed" and "offer complete PC management". This has captured my imagination as I had always considered network cards to be pretty dumb, boring things. Could anyone guide me to something which could give me a crash course in remote NIC/Hub interrogation as (to me at least)(and yes, I know I need to meet more people and get a life!) this sounds quite an interesting and exciting concept. Finally, does using "managed" network cards within a network mean that my network's security is about to become non-existent? (i.e. if a hacker managed to gain access to my network but couldn't hack into my PC could he, for example, in frustration, remotely configure all my "managed" NIC's to do silly things making my network unusable?)
