Mandrake install
by Russell Ward 25 Jul '02

25 Jul '02

During my latest attempt to install Mandrake Linux, I mistakenly opted for KDE, which my old system doesn't seem to handle (lots of harddrive noises and takes ages for anything to show). It automatically tries to load a GUI when I login, and I can't see how to revert to a command-line to try and edit some config file. Ctrl-Alt-Bckspc eventually closes the GUI but it then loads up again before I can key in anything else. I would like to use IceWM or Sawfish (less resource demanding? and WMaker didn't appear to be offered during the install). Any ideas please? (The GUI never loads fully so I can't access any config tools that way.) I would prefer not to reinstall (about 5 times now), and feel I am getting somewhere, at least in terms of basic Linux knowledge(ie noway am I going to revert to a previous OS). Fuller report on my experiences as a newbie when I get the machine to do some work! Trying again... I'm not entirely clear on how the file/folder system works in here. Keeping in mind I'm used to using the OTHER OS, is it the same sort of structure? Where are the best/worst places to create folders so that I can remember where things are? Looks like user and home but I'd rather ask before I start trying to add folders etc... #2 - I see some programs (in a brochure that came with the user guide) that I supposedly have available to me but apparently I didn't load during the install. Can I put the install CD back in and load them now without going through the whole install again? Don't know if they'd be on the first CD or the Comm. Apps CD....hmmm......... #3 - In anticipation of installing Linux I began buying Linux Format mag and The Linux Magazine. The cover CD's, (and this more than likely has to do with my first question to some point) if I pop in the CD, then what? Will it automatically put things where they're supposed to go? From what I can gather not having tried it yet, there will be some other 'work' to do to get some of them installed too and they seem to give good directions. #4 - While reading through the user guide that came with my 'boxed set' and also a book called Teach Yourself Linux in 24 hours (yeah right! *g*). When they go through different steps on how to do things it tells me different commands to type but not where or what I should be in to type them!! It seemed a stupid question so I had my fiance try finding out in the books with no luck, so I'm asking. #5 - Have you dozed off yet? lol. There's way too much "space" around my windows. Is there some way to fix this within Linux so that I don't have to keep changing my monitor settings as I go back and forth with Bills product? OK, guess that's if for today. Hope they aren't silly questions......honestly I am researching but can't get to the answers fast enough, could be just a bit excited and impatient. Maybe. Right click on the applet, left click on "Remove from Panel". Gnome and KDE work a lot like windows interface-wise. Also, please tell us exactly which desktop manager you are using. i.e. KDE or Gnome. The answers may be slightly different. There are LOADS of window managers and they all work slightly differently. (Sometimes VERY differently). > And I don't think my last post got through so will send it off again, as an > addition to it; I asked about loading software from a coverdisc (how and to > where), also how would downloading from the internet work? As far as files > being places where they need to go or is that manual? I've received it 4 times now. Perhaps you have the option to see your own posts turned off in your mailing list settings? If you look in the archives (on the website), several people posted their suggestions. (I did I know) Downloading from the internet works the same way as it does in windows, only a little faster (I've noticed). In regards to the coverdiscs, my opinion on that was covered in a previous post. When installing programs, you can download rpm's anywhere. rpm -ivh packagename.rpm will install it and put all the packages in the right places,no matter where you downloaded the rpm files. (you need to be root to do this) You may find this handy: in a terminal type kelly@computer$ su it will ask for a password (the root password) type it in, hit enter You will get the prompt: root@computer# That's how you temporarily log in as root using a terminal. When you have finished doing whatever (i.e. installing rpm's), type exit to exit back to your normal user. If you ever need help on a command, type: man <program name> i.e. man rpm it will give you it's manual page. If you need to exit the man page, just press q (i.e. for quit). That took me ages to work out!!!! Trying Mandrakes software manager (see BJ's post) is recommended, it will download the rpms automatically, and install them too. i.e. learn to crawl before you try to run. Other than all the other suggestions people have made, I would say that maybe you just need to play a bit more, and be a little bit bolder. i.e. try these things out. If you are not logged in as root, then you can't do any *Serious* damage, and if you do, so what? Most people reinstall linux a few times when they start out- you learn from your mistakes (and I make a lot of them). Also, perhaps read one of those "Linux for Dummies" books from the library (or buy one). I always read up using those kinds of books when doing something new and then move on to more complicated books when I get the basics sorted in my head. Hi all, just got back from work to find out that my jigdo download of Debian Woody CD1 has failed it says :- Aaargh - 1 files could not be downloaded. This should not happen! Depending on the problem, it may help to retry downloading the missing files. which it seems to keep trying to download the file driver-4.bin now this is a tad annoying as i can't burn the first CD, I have tried using 4 mirrors now so i feel that if the file is corrupt then somebody would have fixed it by now... Any ideas? /me wishes they would just offer normal .iso images :( Adam -- "Step away from the Cathedral, This Bazaar is loaded" jabberid = quinophex(a)jabber.earth.li

Setting up nVidia GeForce 2 MX400
by Ian Douglas 23 Jul '02

23 Jul '02

Now that I have been running Linux on my new PC for a few days I would like to try to set it up to use XWindows. When I installed Debian I remember it saying it couldn't recognise my video card (nVidia GeForce 2 MX400) and although I have sussed out I can now run XF86Setup to try and set up XWindows all the different selections of Card/Monitor combinations I have entered have failed, even the basic VGA. The only XWindows I can get to run looks like part of a 320 x 200 screen. If there are any ALUG members on the mailing list who have managed to get an nVidia GeForce 2 MX400 video card working with Debian 2.2r4 could they please let me know what settings they used for XF86Setup. The monitor I am using is an AOC Spectrum 7V which should be able to easily handle at least 1024 x 768. Thanks, Ian.

> If there are any ALUG members on the > mailing list who have managed to get an nVidia GeForce 2 MX400 video card > working with Debian 2.2r4 could they please let me know what settings they > used for XF86Setup. I could never get it to work with that version of X. (I think it's 3.3.6). However, Debian 3.0 has been released and it just works fine with X4.1.0. I'd highly recommend an upgrade to Debian 3.0, I could then send you my XF86Config-4 file. (I have the exact same card). The driver you want is "nv", although you can get proprietary drivers from nvidias website (although debian 3 has apt-gettable versions), which uses the "nvidia" driver, and also (regrettably) patches the kernel (so you need your kernel source handy). I upgraded over the weekend from 2.2r3 to 3.0 using a dialup. (took friday night until I came home from pub, and sat morning). For the debian release details, www.debianplanet.org has a good collection of links and mentions new X setup tools. (I haven't used them, though). Hullo List, I installed php-4.2.1 last week by downloading and configuring the tarball, using the - - with - options. The system is still using the old version, however: php-4.0.6. Because I've upgraded postgresql using apt-get to v7.2.1 I needed to recompile php, you see, and so thought I may as well grab the latest version whilst I was at it. How does the system know which of the php's to use? If I brutally remove the v4.0.6 directory I assume php won't work at all. I feel like I've gone back a year in time, all this newbie fumbling about. Does my question make any sense at all? Thanks, Jenny.
