debian upgrade woes
by Ricardo Campos 23 May '02

23 May '02

Oh, it's hard to say where to start on this one.... I upgraded from Debian 2.2r3 to testing (woody) and am having the following problems since my apt-get dist-upgrade. 1st off, it's screwed my keymap, so I cannot seem to find a combination to produce the pipe symobol | (very annoying!) 2nd, it (rather predictably) screwed my X configuration. It seems that X4.1.0 no longer supports the S3 server. (mine's a S3 trio 64+ to be exact). However, dpkg -l shows that I have two xserver-common packages, one 3.3.6, one 4.1.0 . the xserver-s3 package is still version 3.3.6, as is xserver -vga. There may be others, since I cannot dpkg -l | more ! XF86Config brings no joy- it appears to produce a 3.3.6 style config, and XF86Setup segfaults immediately. I'm new to the debian packaging system, so erm... help???? My first choice is to fix the console's keymap. Then I probably want to uninstall X completely and grab Xfree86 3.3.6 of my install CD's again, and then resolving the conflicts this will cause is another question entirely.... *eep* Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Unfortunatly, stable softwares are way behind the latest. So the path goes like this: Stable > Testing > Unstable As you know already you switched to Testing ;) To update to the latest packages, do: $ apt-get update then $ apt-get upgrade (most people do apt-get dist-upgrade, it is sometimes well known to screw up big time..) > My first choice is to fix the console's keymap. I made an attempt to transfer my archive to a larger partition, somewhere in the process of which partition was which, I managed to reformat the wrong partition and lost all my data, (luckily my address book was in the process of being sent back to me by Email). Having through incompetance messed things up, I reinstalled tidying up my partitions at the same time. Having got everything back to normal I went through the same process of setting up Apsfilter that I used succesfully last time, but on trying to produce a test page, or print from it I get `deamon not present' . I need to restart the process but despite searching with Google, and reading the manual I can't find a way to do this that I understand, Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- John Seago

Re: crappy ide for /boot and swap

'by putting in a crappy old IDE disk that contained /boot and the swap partition, and used the raid for everything else. It's been running 3 weeks without problems (well no ones asked me to mend it!)' --------------- you may find that using a crappy old IDE may slow the system down considerably if it starts paging a lot. You might find it interesting to make a swap partition on your big disk and then try doing something that swaps a lot to test which swap is faster - worth an afternoons playing as it can make a hell of a difference! I have a Jabber server, with MSN Messenger transport, running at darlow.co.uk which I would be happy for LUG members to use. The server name is: darlow.co.uk and it accepts plaintext connects on port 5222 and SSL-encrypted connects on port 5223. There are a number of Jabber clients for Linux of which gabber seems to be the most popular but I have had some success using the gaim multi-protocol IM client also. You'll need either a Hotmail/MSN e-mail account or an ordinary e-mail account registered with Microsoft Passport to use the MSN Messenger Transport but for general Jabber IM or use of the chatrooms you only need to create an account on the server. Please feel free to pass this offer on to your LUG members. Red Hat 7.0 is mad about the number "40"

Hi all, I've just installed RedHat 7.0 On my 256MB-RAM 1200MHZ-AMD-ATHLON-TBIRD 38.9GB-HDD. When I rebooted, 40 cept on flashing across the screen. Nothing happened after 20mins, so I installed SuSE 8.0 over it. Anybody know how to stop those 40s? (They came up as soon as LILO started). --- DougT

Video editing with Linux
by Jamie French 20 May '02

20 May '02

Hi Guys, I have a DV camera and looking to edit recorded material via the PC. I have seen many packages within my price range, for instance Pinnacle, though it appears only to be Windoze based. This is ok, but I would really like the option to utilise Linux as well. Software doesn't seem to be a problem under Linux but the hardware does. If anyone has any experience or references I would really appreciate the help. I just don't need any more dependencies on Windoze, especially XP :) Take Care, J

I just put 2 tips in the ALUG website, some stuff on disk usage using du and df (cos everyone should have em as opposed to Gnome/KDE specific progs), and also getting a USB CD-Writer to work. I also cleaned up the events page, putting the last two in the "past events section", and indeed the future events part seems a bit sparse! This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.openprojects.net in the #alug channel, you can take a look at www.openprojects.net to get more info on the openprojects network. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server uk.openprojects.net" or "/server eu.openprojects.net" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. >THE LENDING LIBRARY We have one?! >PUBLICITY COORDINATION >It would be nice to formalise these arrangements a bit more. >I'll give it a crack with PLUG. "I'll link yours if you link mine" A nice easy step is to link each other's websites, so users in east anglia can check events at PLUG, CAMLUG or ALUG and then deciding which event is nearest/most convenient/most possible to attend. >MEETING FORMATS >Following on from that, what format do we want meetings to take? Well, perhaps a timetable structure is in order if we are to have talks or discussions. Perhaps we could do a WIKI that has suggested topics, people could put *'s next to the topic if they are interested, and anyone willing could put their name against it to volunteer. i.e. 5 votes for the subject "The transistion from Windows to Linux ain't all that scary" (a talk for newbies), and the volunteer is me, might look like: NEWBIE: The Transition from Windows to Linux: ***** R.Campos (June 9th) That way we could gauge interest and have a single reference point as to who is offering to do what and when. >FREEBIES > pins, Pin the debian badge on the Beast of Redmond competition? Seriously, though, raffles? Perhaps one for the FSF or similar,or we could do it on a computer to save paper ;), or help out for server costs for the ALUG site or summink. >flame on! Diskspace usage-any good progs?
by Ricardo Campos 19 May '02

19 May '02

I'm looking for a nice program that displays how much diskspace is used, and how much is left on a particular hard-drive. Something like KDiskFree would be cool, except this is for a gnome-only system, and there's unlikely to be any room for KDE. du gives *slightly* useful results, but perhaps someone has a groovy set of command line parameters that would do this. Yes, I have RTFM. -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Please respect mail headers.
by Jonathan McDowell 19 May '02

19 May '02

Can people please respect mail headers when replying to posts to the list? My client (mutt) correctly inserts a Mail-Followup-To header that points to the list *and the list alone*, yet I've had at least 3 replies to mails I sent to the list this evening that were either to me alone or copied me and the list. Don't CC me on list posts. I read the list. It's my understanding that this should be default behaviour unless the poster explicitly requests otherwise and given that I explicitly request replies should go back to the list there seems to be no excuse. ADSL questions
by Chris Glover 19 May '02

19 May '02

Hi, I have decieded to take the plunge and get ADSL. What I want to know is , has anybody managed to get the PPPoATM module for PPPD to compile? I've tried and can't make the _______ (insert your own expletive here) work. I was wondering about getting the Zyxel Prestiege 645R ADSL router, as that supports PPPoE and I have software for that. Will this do PPPoE to PPPoATM translation? I couldn't find any usefull information on their website. I want to continue using my existing Linux machine as a firewall, as I also want to be able to access it from certain restricted site. What ADSL hardware do you use, and have you made it work with Linux, and how? Thanks in advance Chris Chris *************************************************************************** E Mail Chris(a)glovercc.clara.co.uk WWW http://www.glovercc.clara.co.uk Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject. -Anon
