SCSI Install probs

I'm trying to install Debian on a box with a SCSI HD. Unfortunately, I'm having a few problems... I'm having probs with the HD. I get these messages when I boot from the debian rescue floppy: (scsi0): detects card OK, then says:- scsi: <fdomain> Detection failed (no card) scsi0 <Adaptec AHA-294x Ultra2 SCSI host adapter> scsi : 1 host. (gives correct details of HD) scsi: detected 1 SCSI disk in total. sda: Spinning up disk... not responding sda: READ CAPACITY failed Partition check: sda:SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 28000002 [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current sd08:00: sense Key Not Ready Additional sense indicates Logical unit not ready cause not reportable scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0 unable to read partition table. I have a few jumpers I have not set (i.e off), but could if needed. uea meeting room

Hi all. Right, so I finally took a look at ARTS 2.08 (for the uea meeting). It isn't cluttered with terminals, but it is a bit out of the way, back in the teaching wing on the second floor. Lots of desks, not very big (maybe 20-25 people), projector, blackboard, etc. I could see at least a couple of network sockets. Doh, I'm not sure if it's just my browser or maybe my proxy, but now when I click on any of the links on the ALUG Contrib section of the site, it displays the ALUG Contrib index page again. I'm using Mozilla 0.96 and Internet Explorer 6 on WinNT (I'm at work). Happens on both. Dunno who sorts this out- Martyn? MJR? Linux in Visual Effects Talk update

Hi folks, I've been just been given approval by the director of engineering and the PR department of the company that I currently work for (The Moving Picture Company - see http://www.moving-picture.com) with regards to a talk about how we use Linux in our work (as well as painting an overall picture of how Linux is used in the post-production and visual effects industry). I'll hopefully will be bringing some goodies with me courtesy of PR, as well as a showreel of work that we've produced over the years. What's left to do now is to organise the time and place for me to give the talk ;) As I'm now living in Surrey - the UEA would be the best place for me to visit, but failing that Syleham is accessible as I remember doing that by taxi the last time I was there. Im Using Kmail to send out emails but Im finding sendmail is sending emails but they dont get recieved by the other user. Help! I'm a microsoft user

Hello, My names Dave, and I'm a microsoft user. I've joined the group because I need to be reformed. One of the reasons that it has taken me so long to make the decision to convert, is that I work for the government who use everything Microsoft. I quite often bring work home with me, and I need compatibility with Office 2000. I'm also using office to do my dissertation and research work for my MA, and the university use office as well. When I chat with our IT department about Linux, they seem to know nothing about it (except for one particularly knowledgeble person), even when I go into computer shops, there is a lot of ignorance. Still, I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty and playing with computers - I've been using computers since the early eighties at school and college, I just think that I've become lazy using a system that tries to do everything for you (badly most of the time!) In a way I really miss that hands-on computer work. So that's me introduced, I live in South West Suffolk (Cavendish if you know the area). I'm planning a dual system to start with, and then in the future, a complete conversion. I know very little about Linux at the moment, any suggestions for some introductory reading? Dave.

I can put up some posters and leave some leaflets around my collage... and maybe even get some ppl to go to one of them. I take it there is no lynn venue... sorry i cant even think of a room in hte collage that we could use... but then maybe i think we need to much. We need a room with tables and power sockets... not many of the rooms have alot of power sockets but we could use extension leads and stuff like that(i cany think of the write words... it is monday morning). HHHmmm ill have to see what i can do/find out. dont get your gopes up though. If anyone wants a copy of the poster sooner rather than later, I can send it to your e-mail address offlist. (I'm not likely to be able to FTP it or IRC tonight). The Computer Service Centre opposite Jarrolds in Norwich agreed to hold some leaflets for us, I'll go back tomorrow to give them some colour ones. The other shop (to remain nameless) basically acted as if I'd said "I enjoy killing babies" when I mentioned Linux, although they said they'd think about it, and maybe I did actually say "I enjoy killing babies", you never know. Linux install day....

Hi everyone.... Maybe I've missed something or am just plain dim (probably the latter) ..... The install day, what is supposed to happen, is it an exibition type venue where "the masses" are shown what linux can be installed on, how easy it is, setting up mail/web/news/samba and all that ? If this is the case I've got one of those monster hot swap, redundant everything IBM 4500's we can build and setup for an example of a Linux server in an enterprise environment.... I may also be able to get my hands on a Compaq DL380 with usual redunant stuff, plus a Compaq Remote Lights Out Card, which is quite funky in itself if you're interested in Out Of Band management... Or is it just a frenzy of installations without too much emphasis on anything in particluar ? Simon

E-Mail To /dev/null

Hi All, I get tons of spam in my mailbox, mostly from job sites who continue to send me job listings months after I found a job and I've supposedly unsubscribed from their "service". These e-mails can be anything up to 200k in size and since I'm on dial up I was looking for a better solution than just filtering and sending to trash in K-Mail since I still have to download the things currently. Is there any way I can get the mail headers first and then just trash the e-mail or do I really have to download these things? Ta, Matt

Sound problem

Hi, I am trying to get sound going on my IS 639 chip set based PC. I am running RH7.2 which detected my SIS accelerated audio and loaded the 'appropriate' modules. But no sound. Anyway, I have tried lots of things but basically I am stuck. The current situation is sndconfig detects the chips OK and the modules soundcore, trident and ac_97 have loaded OK. I tried cat /usr/local/sndconfig/sample.au >/dev/dsp but it just there doing nothing till I kill it. Yes, I have run up a mixer and made sure the volume controls are turned up. I was thinking maybe I needed to pass some parameters to the card but when I tried to add an options trident io=0x220 line to modules.conf I get an invalid option error. I even looked at the trident.c source from which it is apparent this module works for four different card types so maybe there is an option I need to select here. So what do I do next? Ian
