Re: EXT2 ->EXT3
by tom potts 25 Apr '02

25 Apr '02

I believe (but then I'm gullible) that ext3 is a sort of add-on to ext2 and is backward compatible! http://www.redhat.com/support/wpapers/redhat/ext3/why.html Your disk behaves like ext2 but with added bits. If your system doesnt crash then the disk is a valid ext2 disk as well as ext3 so can be mounted and read by ext2 only systems. Of course if you modify the ext2 data and then run ext3 there may be problems as the journaling will be 'out of whack'. I have a 120Gig RH7.2 ext3 drive and take delight in the fact I can power off at random and get back to working in under a minute! Administrivia: contrib and main list
by MJ Ray 23 Apr '02

23 Apr '02

In a fit of mental cruelty not seen for some time, I've connected the wiki templates up to the XML/XSL generation system that does the main site. The contrib pages now look more like the main site. Scary, eh? Also, in a fit of petty baby-eating, emails to the list with a subject line of "Re: main digest ..." etc will be bounced. It does ask you to edit the subject line on replies, after all, and it's hard to tell what its about before opening if the subject line is useless. Goodnight, cruel world.

Kernel 2.4.18 Power Off
by John Seago 23 Apr '02

23 Apr '02

I was using the 2.4.18 kernel and had managed to compile it so that it switched of the machine when the shutdown process reached its end. I re-insalled my Slackware 8 system and re-compiled the 2.4.18 Kernel, however I cannot seem to get the permutations back to the way they were during my previous use of the 2.4.18 kernel, and now I cannot get it to shut down my machine, despite some 32 attempts. I made enquiries at yesterday's meeting at Elmswell, (thank you Rob), and it appears that this problem affects others as well. Mark did give me some information as to how I could overcome this problem, unfortunately I did not write it down, and my latest attempts have yet to produce a kernel which will shut down the Computer at the end of the shutdown process. Any help anyone can offer on this subject will be gratefully received. -- John Seago

Re: [Alug] 3d hardware stuff(nvidia)
by Ricardo Campos 21 Apr '02

21 Apr '02

> Hi everyone, > I've just installed the nvidia drivers for linux, but the openGL > applications won't start. After installing the nvidia kernel patch, you need to change the driver from "nv" to "nvidia" in the XF86Config files. Before installing the NVIDIA_GLX package, you need to: cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions mv libGLcore.a libGLcore.a.mesa mv libglx.a libglx.a.mesa cd /usr/X11R6/lib mv libGL.so libGL.so.mesa mv libGL.so.1 libGL.so.1.mesa mv libGL.so.1.0 libGL.so.1.0.mesa mv libGL.so.1.2 libGL.so.1.2.mesa mv libGL.so.1.2.0 libGL.so.1.2.0.mesa THEN install the GLX package. Make sure the XF86Config files have a line saying: Load "glx" (this is probably commented out by default). You should get the NVIDIA symbol come up before you login if it's all installed A-OK. Restart the X-server (ctrl+alt+backspace) if in doubt. Hope that helps. Sending ASCII to a Serial port?
by Dryden 19 Apr '02

19 Apr '02

What would be the best way to send char's and strings to a serial port? My problem is that i would like to send commands to a robotic arm that ive played about with a few months ago. At the moment the electronics teacher is using QBASIC to work it... I used to love QBASIC but I don't have a Linux equivalent and to be really honest I don't want one (BASIC == S...L...O...O...O...W...W...). In his current program he's opening the serial port and then using the print statement to send the strings to the robotic arm. How would I do this on Linux in c? Would I use the file handling commands and open /dev/S0 (what ever the Comm ports are called under Linux) and then use fprintf(serial_port, "command")??? Would i have any problems doing this f5rom a normal user account on my system or would I need to be root? It would be nice if anyone could give me some example code or give me the address of a good web site on the subject:). I'm Not so hot on file handling in c so even some examples of this would be nice. Thanx for the help :) Dennis Dryden ********************************************************************** IMPORTANT: This email and its attachments are intended for the addressee only and may be confidential. Whoops/HELP!/Promotion & Marketing ALUG
by MJ Ray 19 Apr '02

19 Apr '02

I finally did something I've been meaning to do for a few days and gave the people at bestevent.co.uk a call. They run computer fairs around the ALUG region (eg, King's Lynn tomorrow, Thetford Sunday, BSE & Norwich the following weekend), so I thought putting a few leaflets out at their event in exchange for some leaflets at ours would be mutually beneficial. However, I seem to have been offered stand space at tomorrow's King's Lynn event. Foolishly, I accepted. Erm, help. Is anyone else in the King's Lynn area able to come along to Lynnsport tomorrow and man the stand for a bit? I'll do the first hour or two (10-12ish), but I really need to get repairing my car and sorting out the house too. Even if you don't want to man it, I'd like to meet any other ALUGgers in this area. If no-one can, it's not a dead loss, as I'll leave the leaflets and posters which I'm hastily preparing for people to post back to us, or come along to one of the next few events. If anyone can email me ideas (or even whole lumps of text) for leaflets, that is also good. At the moment, I'm ripping through the ALUG site. I'll chip in a few quid for printing, but any more help would be welcome. I also don't have any giveaway CDs any more... anyone able to obtain some of those, either now or for later? More generally, is promotion at some of these fairs a good idea? I guess tomorrow will tell... -- MJR

XFree86-4 and AGP

I have a Tyan Thunder K7 MP board with a Matrox G400. I have recently enabled AGP & DRI support in my kernel. I chose the AMD Irongate, 761 and 762 support as being the only option remotely resembling my mainboard's chip set: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]: Unknown device 700c (rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD]: Unknown device 700d 00:07.0 ISA bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-765 [Viper] ISA (rev 02) 00:07.1 IDE interface: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-765 [Viper] IDE (rev 01)00:07.3 Bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-765 [Viper] ACPI (rev 01) 00:07.4 USB Controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] AMD-765 [Viper] USB (rev 07 It would appear that this isn't an appropriate match as I see in my log: Apr 19 10:41:15 DATAMAN1 kernel: [drm:drm_init] *ERROR* Cannot initialize the agpgart module. Does this mean AGP & DRI aren't going to work for me? Barry Samuels
