Kernel 2.4.18 Power Off

I was using the 2.4.18 kernel and had managed to compile it so that it switched of the machine when the shutdown process reached its end. I re-insalled my Slackware 8 system and re-compiled the 2.4.18 Kernel, however I cannot seem to get the permutations back to the way they were during my previous use of the 2.4.18 kernel, and now I cannot get it to shut down my machine, despite some 32 attempts. I made enquiries at yesterday's meeting at Elmswell, (thank you Rob), and it appears that this problem affects others as well. Mark did give me some information as to how I could overcome this problem, unfortunately I did not write it down, and my latest attempts have yet to produce a kernel which will shut down the Computer at the end of the shutdown process. Any help anyone can offer on this subject will be gratefully received. -- John Seago

Sending ASCII to a Serial port?

What would be the best way to send char's and strings to a serial port? My problem is that i would like to send commands to a robotic arm that ive played about with a few months ago. At the moment the electronics teacher is using QBASIC to work it... I used to love QBASIC but I don't have a Linux equivalent and to be really honest I don't want one (BASIC == S...L...O...O...O...W...W...). In his current program he's opening the serial port and then using the print statement to send the strings to the robotic arm. How would I do this on Linux in c? Would I use the file handling commands and open /dev/S0 (what ever the Comm ports are called under Linux) and then use fprintf(serial_port, "command")??? Would i have any problems doing this f5rom a normal user account on my system or would I need to be root? It would be nice if anyone could give me some example code or give me the address of a good web site on the subject:). I'm Not so hot on file handling in c so even some examples of this would be nice. Whoops/HELP!/Promotion & Marketing ALUG

I finally did something I've been meaning to do for a few days and gave the people at bestevent.co.uk a call. They run computer fairs around the ALUG region (eg, King's Lynn tomorrow, Thetford Sunday, BSE & Norwich the following weekend), so I thought putting a few leaflets out at their event in exchange for some leaflets at ours would be mutually beneficial. However, I seem to have been offered stand space at tomorrow's King's Lynn event. Foolishly, I accepted. Erm, help. Is anyone else in the King's Lynn area able to come along to Lynnsport tomorrow and man the stand for a bit? I'll do the first hour or two (10-12ish), but I really need to get repairing my car and sorting out the house too. Even if you don't want to man it, I'd like to meet any other ALUGgers in this area. If no-one can, it's not a dead loss, as I'll leave the leaflets and posters which I'm hastily preparing for people to post back to us, or come along to one of the next few events. If anyone can email me ideas (or even whole lumps of text) for leaflets, that is also good. At the moment, I'm ripping through the ALUG site. I'll chip in a few quid for printing, but any more help would be welcome. I also don't have any giveaway CDs any more... anyone able to obtain some of those, either now or for later? More generally, is promotion at some of these fairs a good idea? I guess tomorrow will tell... -- MJR

Why should I get an 'Illegal request'?

I've just noticed this in my logs: kernel: sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST. It appears to have happened after I played a CDROM although everything seems to work. Can anyone explain why this should occur and will I be arrested for it? Barry Samuels

Introduction

Just a quick hello from someone who's just joined. Backgound: Married 49 year old male (no kids) currently living in Norwich. I've been working with computers (mostly commercial software development plus some system admin. and support) for nearly all of my working life. Most of that has been with IBM mainframes and PC Windows networks of various kinds. I currently work at the Stalham office of an outfit called Kewill (www.kewill.com) My wife thinks I've totally lost it because I come home and relax by doing what I've been doing at work all day! I've had a home computer since the days of the good ol' BCC Micro. I was lucky enough to work on a Unix based system (Sun) about 10 years ago and ended up as the sys. admin. (oh! happy days! :o) ). I've been a Unix fan ever since. Reason for joining: After many years of saying "This year I'm going to install an Intel version of Unix on my PC" I finally got round to putting Mandrake 7.0 on early last year. I immediately started to try and customise it to suit my hardware and ran into all sorts of problems. I'm now in the midst of trying to install my own flavour of Linux from the Linux From Scratch project <http://www.linuxfromscratch.org> and having moderate success. I hope to learn enough from this to have a bit more success tailoring Linux for my own use. It would be nice to link up with other Linux afficianados in the area and swap war stories, experiences etc. and perhaps be able to help others out where possible.
