XFree 4, Matrox G400 & graphics acceleration

I have a Matrox Millenium G400 in my machine which is running Debian 'Testing' which means XFree 4.1.0 I believe. I notice that in the kernel configuration there is an AGP support option which is not enabled. If I enable this a number of other options become selectable none of which match my mainboard's chipset AMD 760MP. Further down the DRI option if enabled (which it currently isn't) then a Matrox G200/G400/G450 option becomes available. Do I need any of this? That is to say would it make normal graphics use any faster? I don't play games or use any particularly graphics intensive software. Any advice *may* make me less confused - but then again ... Hello List, Anyone out there creating PDF files with Linux? If so, with what software? Basically I have a bunch of stuff to scan and convert into PDF and jpg files. Jpg is easy but I'm not so sure about PDF.... SCA-2 to 68pin converters.

OK clever peeps, I'm tearing my hair out at the mo. I have an 80 pin LVD SCSI HD and a pci LVD SCSI card that has 68 pin and 50 pin interfaces. I have a 68pin terminated cable. I know you can get 80 pin to 68 pin converters, but it seems to have female connectors on both sides. So not sure if there would be any suitable converters for attaching to 68pin cable. We always had to send them back to the supplier as the salesman who sold it didn't know the difference. Mail MTA and mySQL

Hi everyone, Recommendation time...... I'm trying to find the best MTA to meet my requirements,and these are... 1. mySQL integration, alias, virtual users, security, authentication, local domains (maybe even the mailboxes themselves) 2. Easy administration, in relation to Sendmail, with web based admin as standard. 3. Spam controls. 4. AV integration.. I realise that there is a way to do this on just about every MTA, but I'm looking for one that can be recommended, ease of use, installation and configuration... The main thing is the mySQL integration, I've been looking at it with Sendmail and although it's possible, it looks a nightmare. and to top things off I've got to do this on a live system!!! BUT... I'm building a new server soon and want to get an action plan and application list together before I start (will also give me some time to RTFM).. tia Simon

In selling a product to someone (in this case Linux), you need to reduce the number of times you say no to your potential customer (in this case business users), e.g: Customer: Wow, free, what's the catch? Customer: Where can I get new applications? Customer: How do I get support? Customer: Who is my business relationship with? Customer: Who do I sue when the product can't deliver the expected functionality? Customer: How do I train my people to use this new software? The linux community appears to be answering some of the above questions, particularly for the "server" market. But still lacks in the desktop space, e.g: * How many training companies are offering courses now in using office suites for linux? * How many training companies show users how to use Mozilla for web browsing? For us technical people, the above two questions are mute issues. But remember, the average computer user (not nerd) is a technical idiot (this is not meant to be a putdown: they have other things which concern them more). Without getting some of this desktop support in place, the average users of the Linux desktop PC won't be able to use it correctly. Hence, this still makes it a difficult job for an IT manager to change the desktop over to free software. Firstly they have to justify the change with clear and concise answers (remember, some people view free items as having no value). Secondly, if an IT manager does change the business over to free desktop software, he/she does not want to carry the burden to retraining all the users who only have limited experiece of Word, Excel and Powerpoint. My 2 cents worth. Ashley I think Ashley hit the proverbial nail squarely here. Think of an avarage business and telephones. They don't want to know about the complexities of exchanges etc. they just want a phone on everyone's desk and a bunch of optional extras like call forwarding, voice-mail etc. It makes good commercial sense to pay some provider a monthly, quarterly or yearly rental rather than get into the hassle of a setting it all up in-house (although I know many do :o) ). How about satellite or cable TV? Why pay a monthly subscription for something you can (mostly :o) ) get for free as broadcast to air? Yet many people do. Presumably because they regard it as something they want and are prepared to pay for. I wouldn't be surprised if computing goes down this road. Think how attractive it would be for a company if they could just rent a bunch of Windows terminals that connected to their own private virtual network. They would presumably just pick the applications off some pre-configured shoping list and pay a monthly/quarterly/yearly charge. New person joining? just order a new terminal and plug it in. Need more disk space, just rent it. New release of software? overnight upgrade. Of course this doesn't mean all the old support problems go away (just one word (ok acronym! :o) ) - BT). But you dump the lot on someone else. You have someone outside the company to blame and hassle. You only have to read some of Scott Adam's Dilbert books to get an idea of how attractive this idea will be to many managers. Of course the big showstopper at present is the lack of any effective widely available broadband circuits, but that's just technology, it'll get there. The question is will these services all be MS based? For example BT doesn't have all the PBX business in the UK by a long chalk. There a quite a few smaller providers doing very well thank you. opengl in mandrake8.1

Hi, I have a 64MB Geforce2 Pro graphics card and 256MB RAM with an AMD Athlon 1.2Ghz processor. OpenGL is superfast in Windows, but in Linux everything that uses it is very slow (Tuxracer 0.61 is less than 2fps, GLTron is rather slow when you are near a wall [15fps] and so is ArmageTron). My OS is Mandrake 8.1. Maybe it'll be better in 8.2... Anyway, does somebody know how to fix this? DougT dougie(a)retallackthompson.freeserve.co.uk

You know when you have installed the drivers, since you get an Nvidia splashscreen when you frst boot up, or if you restart the X server with a ctrl+alt+backspace. Enjoy! I havent tried it in Linux but under some unix (AIX for certain) the adduser command is 'flushed' to help prevent this happening i.e. if you pipe into the command the whole stream is dumped before the username is prompted for so using scripts wont work! The reason for this is its an obvious security risk to allow people to create users from files easily. Like all bad security ideas you can get round this by pretending youre a modem! i.e. use an stream reading 'client' like chat as a 'buffer' that only sends the username/password/group etc when requested by the adduser program. Help with a script :)

Greetings people, I need some help or suggestion for a script (actually for my girlfriend who is doing a degree in Comp. Sci in USA). She has a subject on Sys Admin. on Linux :) and on my last trip to USA I installed her a RedHat box at home since they use RH at Uni. , helped her a lot with some other exams on basic sys admin in Linux, inst. etc but I am nowhere with scripting. So here we go the assignment in full : 1. Write the AUFF (Add User From File) script. 2. This script should take a filename as a command line parameter. 3. This file should contain all of the "standard" options for the add user command. 4. You get to decide the format. 5. You get to document the script. 6. You get to write a "man" document supporting your script. 7. Submit a printout of the script, a test file, and your "man" document. 8. Implementing any advanced parsing features will earn you bonus points. (optional) Sorry for the long list and any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm back to College now in Ipswich and again as always if someone needs some Linux ISO's and lacks a broadband conn. I am more then happy to burn some fresh ones for any user in the group (for free of course:). I will try to make some of our meetings as I do miss them :) thanks for your time and hope to see you all again later. Bamir.

ADSL ethernet modems

Hi, Now that ClaraNet are offering an affordable "Wires-Only" ADSL package, I am thinking abou changing over to it. I'm getting fed up with a 56k modem download speed. I want to use my linux machine as a firewall/router, as I currently do with the modem. Themachine has two network cards in it. The first is a 100Mb Linksys card which has the private network. The second is a 10Mb NE2K-PCI card which is currently unused. I have been considering getting the Alcatel Speedtouch Home Ethernet ADSL modem. From reading the manual I beleive I can set it up so that my linux machine has the correct IP address for the outside world (using PPTP and PPP). I want the Linux machine to do the NATing, and not the ADSL modem. I do not want to use USB devices as they are too processor intensive, and I have had problems with USB on both Windows and Linux machines, I don't trust it as far as I could throw it. Has anybody had any experience with setting up Ethernet ADSL modems? Can you recommend any other devices than the one I've named? M$ to release db based filesystem

OK, I'm a bit slow on the uptake (I refer to this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23852.html ) But doesn't this have rather strong implications for interoperability? BASICALLY, the article is about the next version of Windows and how M$ are said to be planning a filesystem that is basically one big database- effectively shipping out a copy of M$ SQL server with the OS. I guess that when you request some information, it will form a Transact-SQL (TM) query... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Another interesting article, btw is http://www.namesys.com/whitepaper.html Do you think it'll really make a big difference to Linux? Meetings! next one Elmswell Sunday 21st April

Hi all, I just realised that we have a meeting next weekend at Elmswell, can somebody either email me the venue info as i can't find it or edit the Wiki so that the info is there? Also does somebody want to spam^Hinform other linux groups in the area and do the newsgroup thang? Also is the UEA meeting confirmed yet for June? If so should we start trying to publicise it this week, I guess most print magazines will be past the submissions date for this (linux format etc.) but we can concentrate on the papers and local Radio etc. etc....
