I let it set up all my X server, gadgets, games etc. and installed all the server stuff from source. Since I sometimes play about with stuff at home for work I find that Mandrake's default installation locations are pants, not to mention the fact that it installs Apache with *everything* turned on. In fact I hardly ever install from packages. I don't find that Mandrake complains at all. If I need to install something from the CDs then I use the source RPM and build it from there. That way I don't have to worry about missing dependencies etc. All in all, a great distro - and this comes from a "hardcore" Unix user who plays with Solaris at work. Matt

Hi chaps and chappesses.. It's probably possible and really easy, but I don't know how... I want to dump a file in a directory and as soon as it appears to be executed then removed... i.e ftp a file onto a server in a particular directory, once uploaded, the file gets executed immediately... Possible yes/no? I'm sure I've heard that this can be done, just can't remember.. TIA Simon

Sounds brilliant to me - Sun 21st April, 2-6? We ought to check most people can make that so you have a nice roomful of geek-types this time. I can bring all my computers and everyone can laugh at my fetchmail config files. Last night I decided that I needed to tell fetchmail that it had to use procmail to deliver mail locally, and I then wrote what I considered to be a basic procmail file. I then expectantly fetched my mail, and sat back in joy and delight as the mail plopped into the right boxes. Two minutes later, after wondering why the computer was still scrunching , I did a ps aux, and realised exim was undergoing a new process every second or so, then on opening a groaning heaving mutt I realised I had unwittingly set up a mail loop and my mail was replicating and sending itself back to me, so i now have four copies of every message in my mailbox, great. About 4,000 mails. Back to the drawing board on that one, eh! (Mark is now going to post a message asking why on earth I was tryng to use procmail in the first place....;-) ) Jenny.

Lynn meeting?

Well when and where will it be in kings lynn? sorry i dont know if any of this has been decided yet and was just wondering what was happening(if anything)? Also just a note for the install days i think that games are a big selling point about any operating system. If your going to try and convert people then maybe you should show the average user that its posible to play games on linux. Have quake 1, 2 or 3 playing would be nice and maybe an emulator or two(xmame runing metal slug is quite nice). Darkest Kent is probably further than I would travel. There may be halls etc in Burwell, if anyone would be willing to travel my way, but they won't be free, so we'd need to know folk were definitely turning up to cover costs. Then again, if you come to Burwell, we may as well set up at my building site/ house, as long as allowances are made for the loud GP racing on telly in the corner of the living room. Unresolved symbol iopl

Hi Folks Just started writing a new driver for an on going project - The user space test program works fine (up to a point). It reads and writes to the correct IO ports as expected, but the user interface is a bit naff. Now the fun begins - Converting this thing to a module, I have all the usual header includes (lifted from an existing driver), and have hacked the basic initialization routines. It compiles without any errors which in it's self might be worrying, but when I load the module, I get an unresolved symbol "iopl" - I thought this thing was a requirement before any IO access could take place. Has anyone come across this before ? Regards, Paul.

exim conf request

Hi all, I meant to ask on IRC last night (but was too occupied with talking about food and motorbikes)....is there anyone out there who could send me a copy of their exim.config file, so I can try and see where i am going wrong? I'm trying to set up my home network so that my windows-using family go through my linux box for mail as well as web access.....I've now got as far as windows sending the mail to linux box and it being passed on out of the door correctly, but mail coming in for $user(a)trx850.uklinux.net all gets sent to /var/spool/mail/jenny rather than /var/spool/mail/$user. Which would be fine if I want to sit by my box forwarding mail to the correct owner all day after spying on their conversations, but I don't. I did get my web proxy server to do caching last night - it hadn't hitherto worked because i needed to change the owner of the cache directory to web-user. Simple when you know how, *sigh*. Thanks! All seems to have gone well, with lilo happy to give me a choice of kernels to boot into....2.4.18 seems ok so far. Let's see if it cures the "do_try_to_free_pages_update" problem! Cheers, all! new kernel install

Happy spring, all! I've celebrated by doing my first kernel upgrade. Now, I have gone through all the make stuff, and ended up at make bzimage, with the intention of sticking the image on a floppy for testing. However I've come up with the message "warning: kernel is too large for standalone boot from floppy". How advisable is it to just go ahead and "make install" at this stage? I have copied vmlinz-2.2.18 and config-2.2.18 to vmlinuxOLD and configOLD. Also, is "make bzlilo" like "make install" but also tells lilo about the new kernel image? Thanks! Jen.

I expect other LUGs participating would like to use such a thing. I'm more than happy to do the artwork and documentation, so who can compile the CD image? Shall we talk about this on IRC on Monday? I expect I can arrange distribution too if required, but hopefully it won't be a full 650Mb (reduce download and burn times... let's not fill the disc with crap just to make up the numbers, but having (for example) key starter docs from the LDP on there is probably a good idea). -- MJR

Evil, huh? ;-) I tried Zipslack and Phatlinux before any other- the only real bonus is that you don't have to get confused with partitions etc. I didn't really find them more accessable than a normal distro that sets X up for you (or helps you along!). You need to have the documentation handy too-it's probably harder for us to print that out than it is to do CD's. I think one thing that puts newbies off is: I've got this command line- now what? Anyone got one of those SUSE live evaluation CD's? I've never used one, but the concept of playing around in a Linux distro purely off a CD (without having to play with your HD) makes trying it out a lot easier.
