Help with a script :)
by CEPi 14 Apr '02

14 Apr '02

Greetings people, I need some help or suggestion for a script (actually for my girlfriend who is doing a degree in Comp. Sci in USA). She has a subject on Sys Admin. on Linux :) and on my last trip to USA I installed her a RedHat box at home since they use RH at Uni. , helped her a lot with some other exams on basic sys admin in Linux, inst. etc but I am nowhere with scripting. So here we go the assignment in full : 1. Write the AUFF (Add User From File) script. 2. This script should take a filename as a command line parameter. 3. This file should contain all of the "standard" options for the add user command. 4. You get to decide the format. 5. You get to document the script. 6. You get to write a "man" document supporting your script. 7. Submit a printout of the script, a test file, and your "man" document. 8. Implementing any advanced parsing features will earn you bonus points. (optional) Sorry for the long list and any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm back to College now in Ipswich and again as always if someone needs some Linux ISO's and lacks a broadband conn. I am more then happy to burn some fresh ones for any user in the group (for free of course:). I will try to make some of our meetings as I do miss them :) thanks for your time and hope to see you all again later. Bamir.

ADSL ethernet modems
by Chris Glover 14 Apr '02

14 Apr '02

Hi, Now that ClaraNet are offering an affordable "Wires-Only" ADSL package, I am thinking abou changing over to it. I'm getting fed up with a 56k modem download speed. I want to use my linux machine as a firewall/router, as I currently do with the modem. Themachine has two network cards in it. The first is a 100Mb Linksys card which has the private network. The second is a 10Mb NE2K-PCI card which is currently unused. I have been considering getting the Alcatel Speedtouch Home Ethernet ADSL modem. From reading the manual I beleive I can set it up so that my linux machine has the correct IP address for the outside world (using PPTP and PPP). I want the Linux machine to do the NATing, and not the ADSL modem. I do not want to use USB devices as they are too processor intensive, and I have had problems with USB on both Windows and Linux machines, I don't trust it as far as I could throw it. Has anybody had any experience with setting up Ethernet ADSL modems? Can you recommend any other devices than the one I've named? Many Thanks Chris Chris *************************************************************************** E Mail Chris(a)glovercc.clara.co.uk WWW http://www.glovercc.clara.co.uk ICQ 18054759 Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject. -Anon

M$ to release db based filesystem
by Ricardo Campos 14 Apr '02

14 Apr '02

OK, I'm a bit slow on the uptake (I refer to this article: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/23852.html ) But doesn't this have rather strong implications for interoperability? BASICALLY, the article is about the next version of Windows and how M$ are said to be planning a filesystem that is basically one big database- effectively shipping out a copy of M$ SQL server with the OS. I guess that when you request some information, it will form a Transact-SQL (TM) query... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Another interesting article, btw is http://www.namesys.com/whitepaper.html Do you think it'll really make a big difference to Linux? Meetings! next one Elmswell Sunday 21st April
by Adam Bower 14 Apr '02

14 Apr '02

Hi all, I just realised that we have a meeting next weekend at Elmswell, can somebody either email me the venue info as i can't find it or edit the Wiki so that the info is there? Also does somebody want to spam^Hinform other linux groups in the area and do the newsgroup thang? Also is the UEA meeting confirmed yet for June? If so should we start trying to publicise it this week, I guess most print magazines will be past the submissions date for this (linux format etc.) but we can concentrate on the papers and local Radio etc. etc.... Thanks Adam -- Adam Bower "a funny thing about regret is, that it's better to regret something you have done, than to regret something you haven't done"

Looking for a low-end Linux server
by Chris Allen 14 Apr '02

14 Apr '02

I'm looking for a low-end linux box - preferably rack-mount to act as a secondary disk mirror for a large web site. Spec should be: - 512MB RAM - 750MHZ - 1GHz - processor not too important - at least 400-500GB hard disk space Does anybody have any idea where I can buy such a beast? I'm happy to do the linux install myself, as long as the box is linux-capable. Many thanks...

Even this would struggle with the traffic that most large sites get today - particularly if the site application designers don't understand how web servers work, which seems to be too often the case.

Their maximum storage (internal) is only 365GB of U160 SCSI (10k rpm). But the cost- for that kinda spec you're talking 4K minimum. http://www.euro.dell.com/countries/uk/enu/pad/products/series_appli_servers… I'd be interested in where you *could* get such a beast too! To do list for ALUG's Linux Install Days 2002
by Ashley 13 Apr '02

13 Apr '02

I have added a new section to the Wiki on ALUG's website to help coordinate effort in planning for ALUG's participation in Linux Install Day 2002. The to do list can be found at: http://www.alug.org.uk/contrib/?LinuxInstallDay2002 Please assist ALUG by reviewing the list and helping in any way you can. This is for a good cause and should help both Linux and ALUG to grow. -- Ashley T. Howes, Ph.D. http://www.ashleyhowes.com "when all the animals of this world are gone, man will die of loneliness"

A KDE2 mystery
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 13 Apr '02

13 Apr '02

After upgrading Debian Potato/KDE1 to Debian Testing/KDE2 an icon on the KDE desktop which should run Word Perfect now doesn't. I have seen in the .xsession-errors file a line which says: cannot find path to /usr/local/WordPerfect/wpbin/xwp This used to work under KDE1 but the mystery is that if I copy the command line from the icon properties and paste it into a shell window Word Perfect runs without problems. If I enable the icon property 'Run in terminal' then it will run. Can anyone explain this please? Barry Samuels

I'm quite > happy to allow them to cosset me in the land of sound, X, and such > stuff. However, servers are another matter entirely. [SNIP] I run Mandrake on my machine. I let it set up all my X server, gadgets, games etc. and installed all the server stuff from source. Since I sometimes play about with stuff at home for work I find that Mandrake's default installation locations are pants, not to mention the fact that it installs Apache with *everything* turned on. In fact I hardly ever install from packages. I don't find that Mandrake complains at all. If I need to install something from the CDs then I use the source RPM and build it from there. That way I don't have to worry about missing dependencies etc. All in all, a great distro - and this comes from a "hardcore" Unix user who plays with Solaris at work. Matt

Not sure what the subject should be!!!

Hi chaps and chappesses.. It's probably possible and really easy, but I don't know how... I want to dump a file in a directory and as soon as it appears to be executed then removed... i.e ftp a file onto a server in a particular directory, once uploaded, the file gets executed immediately... Possible yes/no? I'm sure I've heard that this can be done, just can't remember.. TIA Simon

Sounds brilliant to me - Sun 21st April, 2-6? We ought to check most people can make that so you have a nice roomful of geek-types this time. I can bring all my computers and everyone can laugh at my fetchmail config files. Last night I decided that I needed to tell fetchmail that it had to use procmail to deliver mail locally, and I then wrote what I considered to be a basic procmail file. I then expectantly fetched my mail, and sat back in joy and delight as the mail plopped into the right boxes. Two minutes later, after wondering why the computer was still scrunching , I did a ps aux, and realised exim was undergoing a new process every second or so, then on opening a groaning heaving mutt I realised I had unwittingly set up a mail loop and my mail was replicating and sending itself back to me, so i now have four copies of every message in my mailbox, great. About 4,000 mails. Back to the drawing board on that one, eh! (Mark is now going to post a message asking why on earth I was tryng to use procmail in the first place....;-) ) Jenny.

Well when and where will it be in kings lynn? sorry i dont know if any of this has been decided yet and was just wondering what was happening(if anything)? Also just a note for the install days i think that games are a big selling point about any operating system. If your going to try and convert people then maybe you should show the average user that its posible to play games on linux. Have quake 1, 2 or 3 playing would be nice and maybe an emulator or two(xmame runing metal slug is quite nice). There may be halls etc in Burwell, if anyone would be willing to travel my way, but they won't be free, so we'd need to know folk were definitely turning up to cover costs. Then again, if you come to Burwell, we may as well set up at my building site/ house, as long as allowances are made for the loud GP racing on telly in the corner of the living room. It's not palacial like Simon's cinema, but I have a kettle :-) The offer is there if we are completely venue-less, anyway, although I wouldn't have deemed it ideal. Jen.
