Unresolved symbol iopl
by Paul 09 Apr '02

09 Apr '02

Hi Folks Just started writing a new driver for an on going project - The user space test program works fine (up to a point). It reads and writes to the correct IO ports as expected, but the user interface is a bit naff. Now the fun begins - Converting this thing to a module, I have all the usual header includes (lifted from an existing driver), and have hacked the basic initialization routines. It compiles without any errors which in it's self might be worrying, but when I load the module, I get an unresolved symbol "iopl" - I thought this thing was a requirement before any IO access could take place. Has anyone come across this before ? Regards, Paul.

exim conf request
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 09 Apr '02

09 Apr '02

Hi all, I meant to ask on IRC last night (but was too occupied with talking about food and motorbikes)....is there anyone out there who could send me a copy of their exim.config file, so I can try and see where i am going wrong? I'm trying to set up my home network so that my windows-using family go through my linux box for mail as well as web access.....I've now got as far as windows sending the mail to linux box and it being passed on out of the door correctly, but mail coming in for $user(a)trx850.uklinux.net all gets sent to /var/spool/mail/jenny rather than /var/spool/mail/$user. Which would be fine if I want to sit by my box forwarding mail to the correct owner all day after spying on their conversations, but I don't. I did get my web proxy server to do caching last night - it hadn't hitherto worked because i needed to change the owner of the cache directory to web-user. Simple when you know how, *sigh*. Thanks! Jen.

All seems to have gone well, with lilo happy to give me a choice of kernels to boot into....2.4.18 seems ok so far. Let's see if it cures the "do_try_to_free_pages_update" problem! Cheers, all! This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.openprojects.net in the #alug channel, you can take a look at www.openprojects.net to get more info on the openprojects network. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server uk.openprojects.net" or "/server eu.openprojects.net" and "/join #alug". Popular IRC clients include tkirc, bitchx, xchat and EPIC on Unix, and Mirc under windows. Here are some links to help you get started with irc. new kernel install
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 07 Apr '02

07 Apr '02

Happy spring, all! I've celebrated by doing my first kernel upgrade. Now, I have gone through all the make stuff, and ended up at make bzimage, with the intention of sticking the image on a floppy for testing. However I've come up with the message "warning: kernel is too large for standalone boot from floppy". How advisable is it to just go ahead and "make install" at this stage? I have copied vmlinz-2.2.18 and config-2.2.18 to vmlinuxOLD and configOLD. Also, is "make bzlilo" like "make install" but also tells lilo about the new kernel image? Thanks! Jen.

I meant to post this to the list (which I have now done) but I think that I sent to Mark's address by mistake. I deleted the kernel source code directory and re-unpacked the source code. Reloaded my saved configuration and re-compiled. Now I'm even more mystified. I get an even longer list which includes some network drivers( 3c59x) which appeared to be ok before: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/8390.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/dummy.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_async.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_generic.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/fs/smbfs/smbfs.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_MASQUERADE.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_nat.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/ipv6.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/netfilter/ip6_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv6/netfilter/ip6table_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/netlink/netlink_dev.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.o I can't help feeling that I'm doing (not doing) something very obvious. Ricardo suggested: > Anyone got one of those SUSE live evaluation CD's? Actually, a CD with one of the live Linux demo systems on, a copy of something like zipslack for the Windows/DOS users and copies of network install images for Debian and any others is probably a very good idea for the Install Day. I expect other LUGs participating would like to use such a thing. I'm more than happy to do the artwork and documentation, so who can compile the CD image? Shall we talk about this on IRC on Monday? I expect I can arrange distribution too if required, but hopefully it won't be a full 650Mb (reduce download and burn times... let's not fill the disc with crap just to make up the numbers, but having (for example) key starter docs from the LDP on there is probably a good idea). -- MJR

> Is Zipslack any good for a starter? It may be that we can do one bootable CD with three or more distributions on. Evil, huh? ;-) I tried Zipslack and Phatlinux before any other- the only real bonus is that you don't have to get confused with partitions etc. I didn't really find them more accessable than a normal distro that sets X up for you (or helps you along!). You need to have the documentation handy too-it's probably harder for us to print that out than it is to do CD's. I think one thing that puts newbies off is: I've got this command line- now what? Anyone got one of those SUSE live evaluation CD's? I've never used one, but the concept of playing around in a Linux distro purely off a CD (without having to play with your HD) makes trying it out a lot easier. Worth a go, I guess, just incase you had stuff hanging about from previous comps. > bang head against wall > bang head against wall again I know that feeling too well! As a related point, I suspect if people turn up, some may not bring their computers (they *are* a pain to lug around), so maybe we could have some install discs on offer? Plenty of us could put the first CD of (insert distro's name here) on a CD-R, and there's plenty of Debians CD's bandying about. Perhaps we could do a 3 disc pack for a small fee- like 1 Debian, 1 Redhat, 1 Slackware, just so that we present an offer of several distros so people can try them out. (I'm all for choice rather than forcing 1 distro on a newbie) I know Martyn had some on offer for cheap a while back (in rather spiffy cases, might I add). With regard to the above which was refered to in thursday's main digest, the following was posted in the Freebsd-users digest, of todays date: > Message: 1 > Subject: FreeBSD 4.4 DVDs available to a good home > From: Paul Richards <paul(a)freebsd-services.com> > To: freebsd-users(a)uk.freebsd.org > Date: 05 Apr 2002 11:54:23 +0200 > We've got several hundred copies of 4.4 left that we'd like to give away > to help promote FreeBSD. > Some ideas we've had are to give them out at computer societies in > colleges or other user groups but we're open to any other sensible > suggestions. > We'd prefer to only send out fairly large quantities, of say 100, but > we'd consider lots of 25 as well. If you're interested then let me know. > Paul. Perhaps this may be of some interest for the `Install fest Day' provided someone can install them, I've found it most perplexing as a) I never bothered to learn how to partition, and, b) one is offered such a huge choice that decision making becomes a bewildering maze. Perhaps my subject should have been 'kernel compile problem'

Having upgraded my Debian system to 'Testing' I am trying to move to kernel 2.4.18 but before I do that I need to get an iptables firewall set up. With my original 2.2.20 kernel I had used PMFirewall to set up my firewall. Answer a few simple questions and Bingo - one firewall and a perfectly servicable one too. I am trying to use Endoshield in the same way but have recompiled my kernel with the relevant bits included I get the following when depmod is run: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_REJECT.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_filter.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_mangle.o depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.18/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/iptable_nat.o I have never had unresolved symbols after compiling a kernel until now. Apart from that the kernel seems to work perfectly well. Barry Samuels

My last info was a little incorrect. My /etc/ppp/options file reads: mtu 576 mru 512 lock Since the MRU needs to be less than the MTU. (essentially MTU- header size). Actually, I have noticed that I connect quicker as well as view pages quicker. If you remember seeing those dreadful adverts for windoze users saying "speed up your modem", this is essentially what those programs do. They also usually nag you with popups as well, though! New Member Info

Hi Been lurking for a while now on an old e-mail address but figured it was time to actually come forward and say hello. My names Darren, I live in Essex, 27. I own a medium sized web hosting company, with servers in the US all running Slackware 8, usual stuff PHP/MySQL/Perl/Apache/Sendmail or Qmail PGSQL etc.. We also have servers running Redhat on another network, these are Leased. The other ones are our own equipment, i.e. we are not a reseller as so many "hosting companies are" Just ordered a Rack in Redbus Docklands which should be live by the end of the month. The version of Slackware we use is highly customised, I have found this distro to be great as a server rather then a desktop OS. Everything about the way it boots to the way we run MySQL is "different" which is nice but can also be a nightmare sometime :) I just order SuSE to give that a go as a office desktop OS, tried Deb but didn't really get on with it. I love Linux, not even close to understanding everything about it but I can handle everytning I ever need to do with it. I have a guy that writes PureFTPD working for me on a part time basis and he knows more then I could ever hope to know. His also a hardcore programmer, his working with the PHP Dev team atm for upgrades to the new version etc.. Nice guy to have on board. Here to mix with a few like minded people and learn a thing or two. Regards Darren
