After an hours playing with her windows box to get it to log on (failed) I finally departed with two Vaxen and 5 wine bottle thingys. And in Traditional style: two Vaxes : 15 ukp ea. petrol to collect them: 10 ukp Look on my dads face when he saw the size of it: Priceless Thank you Jenny. D

MTU & TCP/IP
by Ricardo Campos 04 Apr '02

04 Apr '02

Is there any way to change the default MTU in Linux dynamically? (OK, I know that there *is*, I just can't work out how). Specifically, is the change system wide, or could I change it on a per interface basis? I guess I could use ifconfig for eth0, but I am unsure as to where it is set for ppp0. e.g. ppp0 (MTU=<1000) and eth0 (MTU=1000) Is there any kind of mtu learning daemon for interfaces? (i.e. MTU actually being worked out by testing fragmentation of packets on the network) Ricardo, being inquisitive ;) _______________________________________________ "There are several codes, and I know several of them." -Mr. Precise. http://www.rscampos.net Check my online diary out: http://www.rscampos.net/blog.html -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

In reply to asking about changing MTU's, adam wrote:- > Oh stupid me forgot to mention that you can also set it as an option in > pppd the same way as you would using ifconfig. Yes, looks like the suitable option. I just noticed that an an MTU of about 500 produces a significant change in 'speed' over a dial-up (POTS). I didn't think it would make a great difference, but it does, esp. for loading graphics on a webpage. Utterly useless for ADSL, leased/ISDN or cable modems, but then I don't have them. thanks, off to fiddle with my ppp settings! OxLUG selinux talk 7th April
by James - (jtl1-BF) 03 Apr '02

03 Apr '02

selinux talk at OxLUG - Russell Coker AFAIK this talk at OxLUG on Sunday is still on (selinux list message appended below.) A few other posters on CLUG have mentioned selinux recently. I'm certainly up for it; but have no transport at the moment. If anyone else from CLUG or ALUG would be interested in a lift and cost sharing journey - please contact me and express interest in this thread. If there is sufficient interest, I'll contact Russell Coker for more information, as he suggested. Anyone else ahead of me on this one, please email me off list! TIA --James -------- Original Message -------- Subject: talks about SE Linux Date: Tue, 26 Mar 2002 02:16:59 +0100 From: Russell Coker <russell(a)coker.com.au> Reply-To: Russell Coker <russell(a)coker.com.au> To: SE Linux <selinux(a)tycho.nsa.gov> Peter suggested that I should inform everyone about the talks on SE Linux I'm giving in the near future. So here's my current plans: On Sunday the 7th of April I am giving a presentation on SE Linux for OxLug (the Oxford LUG). It's an open invite, contact me off-list if you are interested in attending and I'll get you the details. Then I'm doing a presentation at OLS http://www.linuxsymposium.org/ , and after that I'll probably offer a talk for the Debian Conference 2 in Toronto (early July). I imagine that the DebConf people won't reject a talk from me on this topic. Also I have nothing planned between OLS and Debconf, so I could probably do a local LUG in the mean time. Also at OLS I would like to arrange a BOF on advanced security (where we can discuss SE Linux, GR Security, OpenWall, LIDS, and anything else that seems appropriate). This will be entirely separate from the LSM BOF. Another thing I was thinking of was an install-fest for these things. The topics of my talks will be SE Linux in general and on Debianizing it in particular (with discussion on general packaging issues that also apply to RPM or other packaging systems). Also I will discuss other related issues such as finding bugs in programs through SE Linux (which is actually a very trivial thing but gets people's attention). The balance of the various items I talk about will depend on what I expect the audience wants, and can change during the talk in response to questions (I prefer a very interactive format for my presentations). I've agreed in concept to give a talk for the Nederlandse Linux Gebruikers Groep http://www.nllgg.nl/ , but have not been able to arrange a date yet because of my schedule and their schedule not matching well. I'll also offer talks to any other groups that meet in the center of the Netherlands (where I live), and I'll consider other European countries. I'll be in Australia in May to get married, due to this and the talks I have got planned already I can't arrange anything else before the August. The only possible exception is something in Canada the week after OLS which doesn't involve incurring any expenses for me. At the moment I can't arrange anything in August or later because it's too far ahead and I'm organizing too many other things at the moment and can't deal with that too. Please contact me off-list if you want to discuss any of these issues other than BOFs. Russell Coker

I understand that the .iso of OpenBSD is copyrighted, so that they can at least make *some* money. Actually, I did spend ALL of last week downloading an old copy - 2.8, which is a wopping 618 MB. But the jump from 2.8 to 3.0 appears to be a significant one. I must say this, though. I have *no qualms* about paying for CD's from the source company/org when I am able. It's kinda like a selfish donation "Here have the money, and I'll take a boxed set thanks". *BSD's and Linux

Ok, a bit off topic, but I'm thinking of installing a *BSD (currently thinking of FreeBSD 4.5 which is cheap, or OpenBSD 3.0 which is more pricey). I'm wondering just HOW different I'll find it to linux, and I'm not too sure about which to get. Any hints, tips, suggestions, hideously biased opinions :-P, etc. offlist would be appreciated (or on list if it's Linux related enough). Again, sorry for being a little offtopic. We are conducting an academic research project, studying social interactions online, and how communities organized around products or brands are formed, from a sociological perspective. In this regard, the entire open-source movement, and particularly LINUX user groups and online bulletin boards provide a wonderful context to study these sociological issues. We are conducting a survey of members of LINUX user groups/ online bulleting boards seeking information on different elements of their thoughts, feelings, and motivations of participating in such groups, and the value of the group to them... The survey is available on the web at the following URL: http://www.surveypro.com/cgi-bin/surveypro/run_survey.cgi?id=2444 Of course, this research is strictly academic, and has no commercial links or interests. We hope to publish this research in a sociology journal. As a small token of our appreciation for participants' time, and in the spirit of the philosophy underlying the open-source movement, we will donate $500 total to the five favorite organizations/ groups of our participants' choice (we ask the participant's to nominate their favorite groups in the survey). I am writing to seek your help in conducting this research, first through participating, and second, through encouraging your user group members to participate in the research.. Anyone used Mindi ?
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 01 Apr '02

01 Apr '02

Since upgrading my machine and operating system I have been trying to create a rescue disc set. My trusty old Tomsrtbt no longer works because it doesn't support my new SCSI adapter. I have just tried Mindi and after booting the first disc it stops with the following messages: inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy inserting floppy driver for 2.2.20 unable to get major 2 for floppy mounting /tmp/tmpfs ... Fatal error! Failed. UPGRADE YOUR RAM! Please! Dude, your computer is dying of thirst over here .. I think that the second message is a consequence of the first and is not actually due to a lack of ram as this machine has 256MB. Could anyone please explain what the first four identical messages mean? I did, as required, build floppy support into the kernel together with ramdisc and initrd support. It would be reassuring to have a rescue disc of some sort once again. Barry Samuels

New Member Info
by Leonard Chandler 30 Mar '02

30 Mar '02

I am a long retired person and began delving into computers in 1979 with a Tandy TSR1 - I then lived in Australia and wrote a programme in Basic to do the accounts for a garage I was running there. I used LDOS which was far superior to MSDOS 2.11 that I had to switch to when I bought an Apricot. I am not mad keen on either the ethics or practice of Mr Gates (nor that of Murdoch either) but I am aware that my efforts against them will make little difference. My first purchase of Linux was some 6 years ago (SuSE), the the second about 3 (Definite) and the third 2 months ago - SuSE again and, unlike those previous conversion efforts, I intend to make it this time. This email comes to you via the "auld enemy" because I have problems, but they will be overcome! I realize that for a while I might have to put up with using both systems, but I like the idea of choice, and not being dominated by the practices of one man. Kind Regards Leonard Chandler

newbie question - getting the latest PHP 4 and MySQL for Suse 7.1
by David Eisenhart 29 Mar '02

29 Mar '02

I'm having problems figuring out how to get hold of suitable packages of the latest PHP and MySQL for Suse (7.1) Can't see anything obvious on the Suse site. If I simply go the PHP and MySQL sites for the downloads I figure this may mess up the Suse configurations for these applications, upset it's YAST package manager and generally blow up in my face (?) ...... On a different but related note I see a lot of stuff (such as RPMs, tutorials) that directly relates to Red Hat. Consequently, as a total novice I wondering whether I would be better off moving over to Red Hat ...ok, Suse was painless to install but I'm feeling somewhat paralysed now by not wanting to (at this stage at least) install from non-packaged sources. It also mentioned the OAL (Open Audio Licence) which is attempting to do something similar in the world of music. Ian
