There's an interesting handbook on Linux that newbies may be interested in: http://rute.sourceforge.net/rute.html I had a cursory look (the server appears to be having problems tonight), and it seemed fairly informative. I understand that it came bundled with MDK8.1. It may be of interest to newbies and more experienced users alike. Hi again.... I've got a user who wants a copy of all their received mail sending onto another account.. I was thinking of a .forward file but this sends the message and removes it from the server.. It's got to be a copy, so he can pick his mail from 2 different accounts..... Also, anyone know of an auto-responder for sendmail.. Simon

Sounds like the normal rubbish qmail apologists say without thinking. Any MTA will do quotas and you could force a limited number of recipients with any MTA. It just depends how many hoops one has to jump through. If you do use qmail, remember that it is restricted (non-free for Debian) and realise what you're getting into. -- MJR

Sendmail Questions....

Hi Guys, A few questions for Sendmail..... Is it possible to set the maximum recipients for an e-mail ? If so, any pointers please... Just I've got users sending a half meg file to 200 or so mail addresses!! Limiting mailbox size.. I believe it's done using quotas? Can anyone point me to a good resource to figure this one out.... Is there any other way other than with quotas..... I've been told that qmail does all of the above without any problems.. Any views on this ? Simon

Hi all, The next meeting will be taking place in Common Room A, Nelson Court at the University of East Anglia on Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. Directions to the uea are available from www.uea.ac.uk, and there are mapboards on the campus near the main car park that should get you to the common room easily enough. Post meeting drinks will happen in the Union bar, 5pm - 6pm, altho this is not a hard limit, and may well go on longer.. Rumour is that some beer in the Union is current £1 a pint... not that that should effect whether you turn up or not... ;-) Label your kit, if you're bringing it along, and post here to let us know what to look forward too... I will almost certainally be there, hangover from saturday permitting, and will be bringing my Pico Laptop, running debian unstable, and possibly my other Linux machine, if i've failed to get adsl going on it by then. There is a systems administrator's position at a North West London ISP (who also provide specialist and hard-to-find PC and Mac components as well as fully built PCs - see http://www.webcoin.co.uk, http://www.pc500.net and http://www.spot5.com for details). Roles will include the installation, maintenance and monitoring of Linux servers (based around a mixture of Red Hat 7.2, Slackware 8.0, and Debian) as well as Sun Solaris 8 on Ultra-SPARC IIe's, some FreeBSD boxes (mainly workstations, though) and a wireless private network powered by Debian proxy servers/gateways. Other duties include supporting the development team with whatever requests they have for installing applications on the servers (such as Postgres and MySQL installations, Apache configuration, Exim and Sendmail configuration, etc). You will also be supporting clients by email and telephone and resolving any problems they may have with their web site or email. There will also be the occasion to visit Redbus for maintenance of the server hardware, or to install new kit. If you're interested, please email me directly off the list for more information. Kernel crashes?

Hmmm.... continuing problems since my last recompile (of 2.4.17). (i.e. these didn't used to happen...) 1) If I need to do anything that is intensive disk-wise (writing large files to disk), I am unable to do anything else, otherwise the system locks up. A symptom of this, for example, is that xmms loops about a second of the MP3 I'm playing. X does not respond to ctrl-alt-backspace, the system doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del. 2) Although I have not changed my etc/fstab file, on booting, the system refuses to mount a vfat partition ("wrong fs type, bad superblock or wrong option"). If I mount it manually as root, I can access the partition (but only as root). I DID compile in vfat, DOS and UMSDOS support. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to view anything but the X server logs in /var/logs , as it says that the file is not viewable. How could I view these log files? Which one should I look at? Any parameters I can pass on at boot to enable more verbose logging? I'm VERY close to reinstalling / and chmod'ing my /home partition! Boot problems

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.

JDK 1.2

Hi there, I've just installed some processing software under debian which requires a "JDK 1.2" to run. It seems to just need a java executable to run no graphics or anything. So, can anyone suggest a debian package for woody that would provide me with an equivalent to the JDK 1.2? I have seen the various jdk1.1 and kcaffe packages on the woody CDs and on www.debian.org, but I can't seen anything that would provide anything suitable. Hope someone can help. Cheers. David.

OK, now this is possibly one of the strangest requests that you'll ever get... I want virii, basically so that I can test/play with this funky java ScannerDaemon thing that I want to plug in to our server (free virus scanner, yay!). So, all those "really fun" M$ viruses that we all get from time to time, please bounce a copy this way! (works mail server appears to be filtering the main culprits, damn!) so, brettp(a)users.sourceforge.net is the way to go (I use imap on it from work, given that it redirects to liunuxfreemail.com). IP_Tables rulesets

As I'm trying to rewrite my firewall script (last one on this system was autogenerated). I'm trying to find a suitable one to crib from. I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl. OK...the guy in despatch clicks a button in my ms access database (stop spitting) , which sends the out put in html format to the web directory. There is a link to this file from my intranet website so that anyone (and in particular my boss, who likes to keep a nice tight hold on credit matters) can scrutinise it with an eagle eye. If stuff is being omitted, I'll get my knuckles rapped. So it is just one page, I need to take the multiple pages access has generated and turn them back into one. This must be done before anyone accesses the page, but after the report has been run (daily). It seemed to me that when the page was accessed was a good trigger. If I can use the apache log file to trigger a script that does the appending, i would be delighted....but i now have half an hour left to mend this ugly oversight on my part ( I blame access) and don't know if I can understand this awk thing in that time. Mind you...or php...... (/me finds table and crawls under it with brown paper bag over head...) Now, how about if I try and use a file date changing as a trigger to run a file? So if the date on my html file changes (as the despatch guy sends a new one) it runs a script doing the appending...is *that* more simple? :-) Thanks all! Jen.
