The Apsfilter list suggested taking out lpr and putting in LPrng to overcome `permission problems', Slackware current has a Slackware package of LPrng to try to improve matters (for the same reason I presume), but in my case there have been that many ill informed attempts to get it to work, that I am seriously considering taking everything out and making a clean install, trouble is I lack not only the GNU/Linux experience but computing experience in general, (see previous post). All I wanted was a controllable system which I could use to produce copy for publication, save my research notes and connect to the Internet, and print out papers for Editors. then I found GNU/Linux, and now I'm addicted, I've even spent a huge chunk of last years pocket money on new computers, and probably more on a huge GNU/Linux library which I have yet to understand. -- John Seago Change is not synonymous with `progress'. My Linux Notebook shows my first install was mandrake 8 on the 5th of the 7th last year, (this after two years of having Windows as an electric typewriter and nothing more; second-hand computer cheaper than new word processor). Moved up to 8.1 which showed every sign of becoming a Linux version of Windows by 8.2 so moved on to Slackware 8, which looks as if, if I live long enough I might just be able to catch up enough to be able to control it by the time I'm 70 or so. My insoluable problem, printing, it won't! But I'll have to get Chris my son-in-law to outline the problem. (I'm expecting his post to follow). John Seago

OT Small html question

Sorry to go off topic but I wondered if some one of you web designers out there could answer me a small question. How can I get the alt property within an <img src=...> to be pre formatted or at least can I get line breaks in it? i.e. <img src="mypicture.jpg" alt="some preformatted text with line breaks in it"> -- Cheers, BJ

ip_tables/ kernel modules

hmmm... consequences of compiling my new kernel... when I do $iptables -L even as root, it doesn't recognise that iptables is there, and asks if I need to insmod. I'm pretty sure I compiled iptables into my kernel. In fact I explicitly remember doing it. #insmod ip_tables returns: no module of that name found. #modprobe -l doesn't show it, or ip_chains either I'm pretty sure I did make modules and make modules_install (cos I typed module_install and had to retype). And I'm also sure I compiled it in with a Y rather than as a loadable module (M). Any ideas? Slackware 8 - Cups

This one has got me confused. I have installed Cups 1.1.14 on Slackware 8 to try and get my printer working ( Samsung ML1210 ). Using Konqueror to set up cups http//localhost:631/ I have installed my printer and it shows it as working, but it prints nothing. When I try a test print I get this error client-error-not-possible I do not know where to go from here. Any help would be gratefull to me as well as John Seago as I have got to install his printer as well. Some details of my system Slackware 8 Kernel 2.4.17 kde 2.2.2 xfree86 4.2.0 cups 1.1.14 LPRng 3.8.5 Chris Drane

Full archives of ALUG since June 2000 now on-line!

I have now integrated the old ALUG archives (when ALUG's mailing list was hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk) into the current set of archives so that we now have a complete set of articles posted to the ALUG mailing lists since June, 2000. HTDig will soon pick up the additional articles and index them, so the archive will shortly be fully searchable! What's been integrated? All of the articles for the main discussion list and the announcement list between June 2000 and August 2001 when we were hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk. Can I search the ALUG archives as well as browse them? Yes, simply visit http://www.alug.org.uk/search, or http://lists.alug.org.uk/search. This is all because msaccess outputs reports in html as separate pages and names them filePageTwo.html, filePageThree.html etc etc. The output html files are then sent to the web server, but the page I link from has the file link simply as "file.html" and thus other files are not displayed. of course, i could have a row of links, but they are not always needed and I think this is messy and could lead to misinformation if old data is displayed. So I've been doing the cat filePagetwo >> file.html up till now. Dearest of Teds - thanks for all that, I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed though. I was thinking to run a bit of php code when the page was accessed, to trigger the cat file2 >> file. The $bigfile = join(file("filename1"), file("filename2")); print $bigfile; suggested by Brett does exactly what I need....I just need to figure out how to run the damned thing now! (I do need to find out how to trigger a script when web page is accessed though, as I need to delete appended pages so they won't be appended the next day (if there is a page two one day but not the next the old page two will append when we don't want it).) You never actually need to generate the static page, also, if you *really* want to cheat, upload the files to a different directory (one that you know will only hold them) then using a small php script in the webtree concat all the files together and splat them out the other end, this has the down side of server load but the plus side of ease... <?php $content = ""; $d = dir("/path/to/files/"); while ($entry = $d->read()) { if ( filetype($entry) == "file" ) { $content = join($content, file($entry)); } } print $content; ?> as always - this is more or less off the top of my head, and hasn't been tested at all, I think that should work and will go > 2 files, not sure if the order will be correct thou. php anyone?

Can anyone help me with a bit of php? I need to append the copntents of one file on to another when a web page is accessed. Cron is no use as the timing isn't fixed. I can append a line of text so far, but not the contents of a file, and as I'm away for the rest of the week and have been doing this manually till I find the fix, I'm panicking! - - help! I'm only a young whippersnapper(17), and learnt how to use a computer with a 386 dx 44(Which is still around somewhere with Doom2 yeah!).and Win 3.1 when I was 11. As my dad has been in the computer world for 25+ years he had been using Linux since 0.9X (with a smug smile as well) He always used to tell me that MS was really a load of poopoo. I upgraded computer and os to MS win 95. Then I dicovered the joys of Linux. The one thing that attracted me to linux was The Gimp. My first linux distro was Redhat 6.2 Ahhh the memories; trying desperatly to compile some game or other and wondering what the hell this make and make install buisness was about. one other thing that stick out in my mind is my dad showing me this thing called the world wide web, This must have been when I was about nine/ten. Ahh the halowed sounds of a 14.4k modem :) PS Who is the youngest person on this list?

I've just added reviews for Downloader for X and Audiogalaxy Satellite in the Software Directory for the ALUG website (!!HINT!!) I thought I'd add some reviews of that kind, cos newbies tend to want to know that they can do in Linux the same things they used to do on the Mac/Windows- at least it was a major consideration for me when switching over. I also browsed the site before I joined ALUG/installed Linux after following a link from Linux Format... It's be nice to see other reviews on the site, I'm sure veterans and newbies alike could contribute something (hell, I'm a newbie)... (hinthint). If the browser doesn't wrap the alt contents, then it's a bug in the browser interface, IMO. You can either try using literal breaks or just hope the browser wraps intelligently, but I know of browsers which do neither. Sorry I can't answer the SGML one off the top of my head, but surely the web contains the answer for the particular DTD you're using? I can't think of any way of inlining images, at least. Here's a related question to both of them: when sending an xhtml attachment to an email, and attaching referenced images, how do you refer to them from the xhtml part? Just curious. It's not something I make a habit of trying to do, but it would be nice to know how to do it from GNU/Linux. -- MJR

input /output error on smbmounted directory

[Thinks, what am I doing in at work on a lovely saturday....] Can anyone help me on this?......I mounted a shared directory on my windows machine onto a directory called /jenshare on my linuxbox using smbmount. Then i went home, switched off the windows machine and forgot all about it. Now I have an error coming up right left and centre "File 'jenshare' exists but can not be stat-ed: Input/output error" Doing a ls-l / doesn't show the directory jenshare (I/O error again), however ls -a / does show it. I'm a bit stuffed here....can anyone offer assistance? Thanks. Jenny.

My first installation was RdHat6.2 on a laptop, I then built a computer from old cast-off bits from work and put RedHat6.2 on that. That was in autumn 2000. Late 2001 saw me installing debian on another old unwanted box at work, I then installed it on the box at home, and then the laptop. As I type I am installing a more recent version of debian onto a brand new box fresh in from the shop. When I installed on the box I built myself with old cronky hardware, it took me months to get anything going. This install here it is all "just working". Still, it is good to learn the hard way. Kernel compile/W00t! was RE:NVIDIA/X

ThankyouThankyouThankyouThankyou! Just compiled my first kernel from source (2.4.17), and- wow! That was scarily easy! THEN I compiled the NVIDIA kernel& GLX from source. Weeeeeeeeeeee! Hurrah for openGL! Any other newbies out there- follow the instructions in the HOWTO's and voila (helps if you use LILO as most docs are on that)! Anyways, only two probs: 1 module won't load, I'll see to that when it becomes a problem. The second one, though, is that it won't automatically mount hda8 (I can do it from BASH), because it says I have too many filesystems. Checking /etc/fstab I appear to have 2 swap files (oops, I mean *partitions*) mounted??????? Eh??? I didn't put that there! Any idea how it might have got there? I'm removing it, so only the correct one is present. Just bugs me how it got there. SFPack & Soundfonts in Linux

Here's a tricky one! I've managed to get ALSA and Timidity working quite nicely on my Linux box, despite its being only an ex-skip P166. Now I want to load a particular set of sound fonts. I've already got the usual GUS and Midia sets and now I've downloaded two sets that I particularly want. They're both packed in some format called SFPack, which seems to be a windoze type of format. I've searched around on Google but I haven't located anything that seems to come remotely close to SFPack that runs on Linux. Since I don't have windoze, I'm stuck. This is highly frustrating. Please does anyone have any ideas? Gerald.
