Hi there, best that you register your interest- someone else might be thinking the same as you, and someone else, and so on... (There are now 3 nodes- all from this list, in the Norwich area...but...not...quite...close...enough!) http://www.consume.net/nodes Is the place to add your interest. For general info: http://www.consume.net/consume.html But also check http://www.freenetworks.org/ http://www.seattlewireless.net/ and also, one of my favourite links, http://www.redbricks.org.uk It's a bit off topic, but it's a nice example of community connection sharing. Consume has some mailing lists, I'm sub'd to one, but I'm a little lost in all the antennae and electronics and stuff. (Not my thing really). Hope this helps... I'm no expert myself. Boot problems
by Paul 20 Feb '02

20 Feb '02

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.

JDK 1.2
by David Fairey 20 Feb '02

20 Feb '02

Hi there, I've just installed some processing software under debian which requires a "JDK 1.2" to run. It seems to just need a java executable to run no graphics or anything. So, can anyone suggest a debian package for woody that would provide me with an equivalent to the JDK 1.2? I have seen the various jdk1.1 and kcaffe packages on the woody CDs and on www.debian.org, but I can't seen anything that would provide anything suitable. Hope someone can help. Cheers. David.

OK, now this is possibly one of the strangest requests that you'll ever get... I want virii, basically so that I can test/play with this funky java ScannerDaemon thing that I want to plug in to our server (free virus scanner, yay!). So, all those "really fun" M$ viruses that we all get from time to time, please bounce a copy this way! (works mail server appears to be filtering the main culprits, damn!) so, brettp(a)users.sourceforge.net is the way to go (I use imap on it from work, given that it redirects to liunuxfreemail.com) Thanks guys (and gals), Brett - The totatally insane virus hunting mad fool - Parker

IP_Tables rulesets
by Ricardo Campos 19 Feb '02

As I'm trying to rewrite my firewall script (last one on this system was autogenerated). I'm trying to find a suitable one to crib from. I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro
by Martyn Drake 19 Feb '02

19 Feb '02

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl. Ah - those were the days... (he says with a small tear in his eye..) Regards, Martyn -- http://www.drake.me.uk http://martyn.drake.me.uk http://www.alug.org.uk

The Apsfilter list suggested taking out lpr and putting in LPrng > to overcome `permission problems' [...] I have vague memories of the permissions in /var/spool/lpd being wrong, but I don't remember the specifics. That advice about lpr and lprng smacks of "Sprained wrist? Amputate arm!" You should be suspicious that the adviser has some preference for LPRng. In any case, as you probably discovered, the same permission problems will probably recur. If you can uninstall all but one print server and then send us a "good bug report" in the style of http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html and we'll try to help. All other things failing, it's probably safest to go with one of the *lpr* packages, as more people use them. > All I wanted was a controllable system which I could use to produce copy > for publication, save my research notes and connect to the Internet, and > print out papers for Editors. then I found GNU/Linux, and now I'm > addicted, I've even spent a huge chunk of last years pocket money on new > computers, and probably more on a huge GNU/Linux library which I have yet > to understand. Funny. Most people find that GNU/Linux means that they don't have to buy new computers as often and that there is a lot of free documentation and help available online. Maybe this is the impact of the new popular "Linux" movement with less tradition of LUGgers helping one another and huge "desktop environments" eating all the resources? -- MJR

OK...the guy in despatch clicks a button in my ms access database (stop spitting) , which sends the out put in html format to the web directory. There is a link to this file from my intranet website so that anyone (and in particular my boss, who likes to keep a nice tight hold on credit matters) can scrutinise it with an eagle eye. If stuff is being omitted, I'll get my knuckles rapped. So it is just one page, I need to take the multiple pages access has generated and turn them back into one. This must be done before anyone accesses the page, but after the report has been run (daily). It seemed to me that when the page was accessed was a good trigger. If I can use the apache log file to trigger a script that does the appending, i would be delighted....but i now have half an hour left to mend this ugly oversight on my part ( I blame access) and don't know if I can understand this awk thing in that time. Mind you...or php...... (/me finds table and crawls under it with brown paper bag over head...) Now, how about if I try and use a file date changing as a trigger to run a file? So if the date on my html file changes (as the despatch guy sends a new one) it runs a script doing the appending...is *that* more simple? :-) Thanks all! Jen.

Does it still? Yes it does, but both Chris and I had no success in getting it to work that way. The Apsfilter list suggested taking out lpr and putting in LPrng to overcome `permission problems', Slackware current has a Slackware package of LPrng to try to improve matters (for the same reason I presume), but in my case there have been that many ill informed attempts to get it to work, that I am seriously considering taking everything out and making a clean install, trouble is I lack not only the GNU/Linux experience but computing experience in general, (see previous post). All I wanted was a controllable system which I could use to produce copy for publication, save my research notes and connect to the Internet, and print out papers for Editors. then I found GNU/Linux, and now I'm addicted, I've even spent a huge chunk of last years pocket money on new computers, and probably more on a huge GNU/Linux library which I have yet to understand. -- John Seago Change is not synonymous with `progress'. My Linux Notebook shows my first install was mandrake 8 on the 5th of the 7th last year, (this after two years of having Windows as an electric typewriter and nothing more; second-hand computer cheaper than new word processor). Moved up to 8.1 which showed every sign of becoming a Linux version of Windows by 8.2 so moved on to Slackware 8, which looks as if, if I live long enough I might just be able to catch up enough to be able to control it by the time I'm 70 or so. My insoluable problem, printing, it won't! But I'll have to get Chris my son-in-law to outline the problem. (I'm expecting his post to follow). John Seago

ip_tables/ kernel modules

hmmm... consequences of compiling my new kernel... when I do $iptables -L even as root, it doesn't recognise that iptables is there, and asks if I need to insmod. I'm pretty sure I compiled iptables into my kernel. In fact I explicitly remember doing it. #insmod ip_tables returns: no module of that name found. #modprobe -l doesn't show it, or ip_chains either I'm pretty sure I did make modules and make modules_install (cos I typed module_install and had to retype). And I'm also sure I compiled it in with a Y rather than as a loadable module (M). Any ideas? In November 2001 Werner Heuser, owner of the Opens Source project MobiliX - UniX on Mobile Computers (http://mobilix.org) was charged by "Les Editions Albert Rene", which is owner of the trademark "Obelix". The charge aimes on a deletion of the trademark "MobiliX" and a compensation fee. Also every commercial use of the name "MobiliX" will be forbidden. Every offense can be charged with up to 250.000 Euro or as a substitute with six months prison. Werner Heuser has taken the lawyers Jaschinski Biere Brexl (JBB) (http://www.jbb-berlin.de) to represent him in court. His lawyers had to work out the legal response until January 21st 2002. The legal response (PDF, 22 pages in German) is online (http://mobilix.org/mobilix_asterix.html) now. The document describes the origin of the names Obelix (from "obelisk") and MobiliX (from "mobil" and "UniX"). Many wellknown names are used to show how widespread the suffix "ix" is in the IT business, e.g. often UniX derivates are named by this scheme. This is followed by an analysis of the pronounciation and spelling of the words Obelix and MobiliX, and whether they can be mistaken from members of the IT business or not. As a conclusion the charge is considered void. Since the suffix "ix" is widespread in the IT community, it seems possible that even more projects will be charged. This case is very important for the Free Software community, too. Therefore the lawyers Jaschinski Biere Brexl (JBB) have agreed to make the legal response public. The MobiliX (http://mobilix.org) site is dedicated to Mobile UniX systems. It leads you to a lot of useful hands-on information about installing and running Linux, BSD and other UniXes on laptops, PDAs and other mobile computer devices. Werner Heuser offers his Linux-HOWTOs and his book "Linux on the Road" there. Full archives of ALUG since June 2000 now on-line!
by Martyn Drake 18 Feb '02

I have now integrated the old ALUG archives (when ALUG's mailing list was hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk) into the current set of archives so that we now have a complete set of articles posted to the ALUG mailing lists since June, 2000. HTDig will soon pick up the additional articles and index them, so the archive will shortly be fully searchable! What's been integrated? All of the articles for the main discussion list and the announcement list between June 2000 and August 2001 when we were hosted on rabbit.stu.uea.ac.uk. Can I search the ALUG archives as well as browse them? Yes, simply visit http://www.alug.org.uk/search, or http://lists.alug.org.uk/search. This is all because msaccess outputs reports in html as separate pages and names them filePageTwo.html, filePageThree.html etc etc. The output html files are then sent to the web server, but the page I link from has the file link simply as "file.html" and thus other files are not displayed. of course, i could have a row of links, but they are not always needed and I think this is messy and could lead to misinformation if old data is displayed. So I've been doing the cat filePagetwo >> file.html up till now. Dearest of Teds - thanks for all that, I must admit to being a bit overwhelmed though. I was thinking to run a bit of php code when the page was accessed, to trigger the cat file2 >> file. The $bigfile = join(file("filename1"), file("filename2")); print $bigfile; suggested by Brett does exactly what I need....I just need to figure out how to run the damned thing now! (I do need to find out how to trigger a script when web page is accessed though, as I need to delete appended pages so they won't be appended the next day (if there is a page two one day but not the next the old page two will append when we don't want it).) Grateful thanks all. Jen.

I did a $find / | grep egcs and came up with egcs in /usr/bin and in the /usr/lib/gcc-lib I had a egcs-2.9.1.66 folder. Does this mean I need not bother with installing the compat-egcs. Would I totally screw things up if I did: #mv gcc gcc.bak #ln -s gcc egcs #mv g++ g++.bak #ln -s g++ egcs++ so that when I compile other things from source they'll automatically use egcs as well? Or am I trying to be too clever? lol Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

You never actually need to generate the static page, also, if you *really* want to cheat, upload the files to a different directory (one that you know will only hold them) then using a small php script in the webtree concat all the files together and splat them out the other end, this has the down side of server load but the plus side of ease... <?php $content = ""; $d = dir("/path/to/files/"); while ($entry = $d->read()) { if ( filetype($entry) == "file" ) { $content = join($content, file($entry)); } } print $content; ?> as always - this is more or less off the top of my head, and hasn't been tested at all, I think that should work and will go > 2 files, not sure if the order will be correct thou. Would be more than happy to think some more about it if you want to go that route. Cheers, Brett
