Earl, > This is not possible under Debian, you have to learn another way > (make-kpkg). No, only if you want it packaged for the distribution. You can still lob random files (eg a kernel) in random locations (eg /boot) if you want, but why make life hard for yourself? > Standards (especially de-facto) are a good thing. There should always be a > choice between the Standard and any extensions which an individual distro > may have added. The only major distribution shipping a less tailored kernel than debian, when last I looked, was Slackware. With debian, you can download a Linus kernel and compile it into a package without editing the kernel files -- how cool is that? > As I say - not knocking make-kpkg, its actually very good. But is it not > possible to alter the install files to update the apt database when > installing a kernel using make ? Only if you buggered about with the standard kernel Makefile. Debian doesn't want to do that, so you have make-kpkg. So, which do you want? Proper kernel which you can package, or buggered kernel which you can make "properly"? > PS. written word does not convey tongue firmly planted in cheek, please bare > this in mind prior to slamming me. LOL I knew you Deb guys would bite! ;-) Yes, the Red Hat Update requires registration, but they do not block freemail accounts, or require any kind of activation code for the security updates. (i.e. give em a temporary hotmail acct and fake address and name if you want) Software updates other than that are achievable through www.freshrpms.net or rpmfind.net, and doesn't require as much fiddling as Mandrake... (Mandrakes' claim of 99% compatability with RH RPMS is I think, cough, *massively* overstated). What I was impressed with was that I had EVERYTHING working within 4 hours ( except the slight internet hiccup and my USB CD-writer). Leaving me time to do fun stuff like not using my computer. ;) With Debian I floundered with no usable X installation for.... well, weeks, before I gave up. This is for a home use computer, not a server btw. You wouldn't really bother with a super-dooper Geforce AGP card in a server, would you? (well, maybe if you're fond of Quake3 on your LAN! ;) I guess time will tell whether I will prefer Deb or RH as a standalone home PC or not. I'm not saying Deb sux, I'm just saying I got this working to my satisfaction very quickly, it does everything I want, and does it well with the minimum of fuss. Anyway, there are pros and cons, hence why I'm doing a little HTML review. RedHat7.2
by Ricardo Campos 23 Jan '02

23 Jan '02

Thanks to Martyn, I now have RedHat 7.2 on my system at home. I'm in the process of doing a comparison between RH7.2 and Mandrake8.0 (I know that's not exactly fair!) to put up on the web. But to cut a long story short: *Jumps up and down, grins widely* IT ROCKS!!!!!! Other than the rp3 hiccup, everything works beautifully, ALL my hardware, ALL the programs, security seems good (including up2date- their security update tool), in fact some things I thought would take endless hours took a matter of a few minutes. So, I would have to reccommend it highly, even though I know some people on this list will have vociferous opinions against it! ;) Of course, this is all in the light of the AOL-TW > RH rumours, but still. It rocks. ;) _______________________________________________ "There are several codes, and I know several of them." -Mr. Precise. http://www.rscampos.net Check my online diary out: http://www.rscampos.net/blog.html -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

(Other > questions in the pipeline) Export it from LyX to LaTeX. Then you can use pdflatex (requires graphics in PNG IIRC) and htlatex to produce pdf and html respectively. latex and dvips will produce Postscript for your printers. latex and dvi2tty, or htlatex and html2text or dvitty will produce plain text. Any other formats you can't generate from those? > Or should we be looking at an alternative set of tools ? Maybe, but I'm not sure what. I've not seriously looked at the available choices (given the need for a nice GUI front-end) for a while. The other obvious one off the top of my head would be something that produced DocBk XML for processing via Cocoon2. -- MJR

c compiler prob
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 22 Jan '02

22 Jan '02

Afternoon All, I'm getting the error message "C compiler cannot create executables" when trying to compile something. Don't know if anyone remembers my recent muddle with installing things from the testing in debian in a wild frenzy, ahem, but it all seems to be sort of not working. I tried installing task-c-dev, but that depends on libc-dev, so I tried installing libc6-dev. Again, unhappy, suggested unmet dependency was libc6 (= 2.1.3-19) but 2.2.4-7 is to be installed. "Broken packages" it said. Sniff. I broke my box. Sorry all. I'll bring chocolate biscuits on Sunday, I promise. Jen.

Being ordered to do silly things at work/passwords

Which is better? --------------------------------------------------- e-mail boss with reasons for not doing it - keep copy for self. Make sure you get order to do it in some written form (this normally makes tham wake up to their stupidity). Do work as instructed. If the server gets owned and you get fired then a tribunal will be on your side for 'constructive dismissal' and you'll get a few pennies for a nice self-training course. --------------------------------------------------- On the subject of passwords there is almost no safe/achievable way of doing this. If theres money involved I'd ensure one to one communication via snail mail with signatures - get them to agree to your site terms and conditions before you let them use it - if you are providing passwords. Or let them register themselves but again you'll need paper proof of their ID before you match them to any 'account'. Digital Sigs are now legal in the EU but I doubt if anyone uses it yet Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, I'm writing this using my RedHat box.... I had no joy with Kppp. There were no man pages, and the KDE help didn't.;-) I then tried rp3. If I went thru rp3, I had no luck (I had ppp0 and loopback as choices). Going through the configurator through *that* didn't help, even if I added a new account. I then invoked rp3-config directly, set up a new interface and voila... seems that you have to do it directly! (it's the only thing I did different, and that's a bug IMO) So now all I need to do is put my favourite progs on the RH machine. Many thanks for the help! kppp
by Ricardo Campos 21 Jan '02

21 Jan '02

I'm trying out RedHat 7.2 and stumbled upon 2 problems relating to ppp, specifically kppp. 1) although I can connect using kppp from KDE, there appears to be no data transfer when I attempt to look at a website. (I suspect that I have to manually add my DNS servers' IP addresses, perhaps I accidentally put in my own IP address as the primary DNS server or something during installation-duh) 2) OK, if I do run kppp as someone other than root, it asks for root's password. How could I set it up so that I don't need to run a connection as root? It doesn't do it in Mandrake. I am actually gonna write a little report comparing my experiences with Mandrake and Redhat once I've given RH enough chance- all from the POV of a newbie and "Harry Home-User". (I'll post the URL when it is done). Initial thoughts on RH7.2: bloody hell, that's a bit slick!!! ;) Ricardo _______________________________________________ "There are several codes, and I know several of them." -Mr. Precise. http://www.rscampos.net Check my online diary out: http://www.rscampos.net/blog.html -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

NO NO NO NO NO NO.. I don't think you don't want to do that. And you certainly don't want to tell the world! Look at an automated password generator like apg. It will automatically generate passwords for you. You can then send them out the the users by whatever means you like. http://freshmeat.net/projects/apgd/ Mike On Mon, 2002-01-21 at 12:03, Simon wrote: > Hi, > does anyone know of, or can help me. AOL buying RedHat rumor
by John Woodard 20 Jan '02

I just read this on NewsForge http://www.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=02/01/19/1848219&mode=thread and I can't see if it's good for the Open Source community and Linux or not. Looks like if it were to happen the web would be a more friendly place for the non-MS browser user, with browser dependant sites having to make themselves readable with (insert your browser of choice here). The worrying thing is that RedHat would, just as someone stated on NewsForge "just wither on the vine". It's an interseting prospect though the possibility of all those AOL cds having a distro on them now that would be a promotion and a half for Linux. Cheers, BJ
