CRAFT helps SMEs with limited research capability to develop new products or processes by paying the costs of a research organisation for them. I have recently been sent a profile for a project which has been proposed by an Italian company. They are looking for SME partners in the UK to join the Consortium. As it involves Linux, I wondered whether the following may be of interest to any of the companies in your association? (I can contact companies directly if this is easier). If any company is interested in participating or finding out more about the project, please either let me know or contact the details below as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you. With best regards Emma Emma Noble Project Assistant EPI Centre Coventry University TechnoCentre Puma Way Coventry CV1 2TT Tel: 02476 236593 GENERAL An Italian university spin off is looking for companies interested in developing a new system - VAS, a fully open source application to manage maintenance of legacy Microsoft Windows applications on a geographically distributed network. Catalogues are centralised on a Linux server, by means of Wine, and provided to client workstations using VNC. Companies interested in developing the VAS system itself, end users, interested in centralising Windows applications on a single server are being sought. DESCRIPTION The proposed solution is to centralise Windows applications and to distribute them through the Internet, using VNC and WINE. More in detail, the applications will be installed on a Linux server using WINE. Then, access to the applications will be provided using VNC, directly from the workstation of the users. In case of a new release of an application, it will be necessary only to update the installation on the server; on the client workstation the access will be performed again by the same VNC client. The innovation is to use two existing open source packages (WINE and VNC) to run Windows applications on a Linux server, and distribute them to users through the Internet. The Italian Company is looking for: -companies interested in marketing the server for specific Windows applications; -R&D partners interested in improving the existing WINE code, so to incraese the number of working Windows calls; - end users, interested in centralizing one of their Windows applications on a single server. My new machine (If anyone's interested)
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 17 Jan '02

17 Jan '02

I remember a while ago that people were posting details of their current computers. I didn't do so because I knew that I would be updating my machine in the near future. So here are the details: =================================================================== Antec SX1240 full tower case. Good quality case with some nifty features such as being able to open the side of the case using a handle. One disadvantage is that there are so many cooling holes and slots the new machine is now more noisy than the old one. Hard drive noise mostly. Tyan Thunder K7 mainboard. 2 x 1.3 GHz athlon processors, 2 x LAN sockets, 512 MB ram, Winbond hardware monitoring, ATI Rage graphics chip. ===================================================================== Into this go my Adaptec 2940AU SCSI adapter, 3 x IBM SCSI hard drives together with the SCSI Tape Streamer, SCSI CD Writer, SoundBlaster and Matrox graphics card all from my old machine (not using the onboard graphics chip - only 4MB memory). Unfortunately I could not include my trusty old ISA 56k modem because the new board is PCI only and I don't like external modems - too untidy. So what does clever clogs do? He buys a PCMCIA to PCI adapter that will take an existing PCMCIA modem after researching that such a combination will work only to find that, although it does work, the maximum data transfer rate is 1.6k!!! The manufacturers of the adapter, Elan Digital Systems in Britain, tell that it won't work properly on my board without a BIOS or kernel modification because the bridge chip on the card is not being assigned a PCI interrupt. I'm just repeating what I've been told as it's way over my head anyway. I have emailed Tyan to ask if such modifications are likely to be made in the near future and am waiting for an answer. Does anyone know of a PCI modem that will be guaranteed to work with Debian Potato? As they are cheap it might do as a short term solution. I also replaced my dead UPS with a new Belkin UPS and Belkin provide Linux monitoring software. Good for them! The new setup has been running only a few days but during installation and testing I've had to reboot several times and occasionally after KDE(1) has started I've noticed that whatever was displayed when it was last closed down is opened twice. So I have two of everything. It does not happen every time and it didn't happen on the old machine. Still using the same hard drives and operating system! Oh! One minor problem. I cannot get any sound from the speaker when dialling. 'cardctl config' tells me that the speaker is enabled and the volume in kppp is set to medium. Any ideas on that? Maybe it's this lack of a PCI interrupt that's causing this. So there it is. A fast machine with what is effectively a 16k modem. Bah Humbug! Barry Samuels

Can anyone > please help me with this quite urgently please please please... If that is for all users at that domain, you should do it at the MTA level to avoid eating inodes on the disks. If it's only for some, you could try as script containing: cat fileofusernames | ( \ while read user do echo "$user@otherdomain" > ~$user/.forward done ) but I'd check and test that first ;-) -- MJR

What i'm after is an odbc driver, I found http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/conectiva/7.0/cd2/conectiva/RPMS/php4-odbc-4.0… I thought it would be quite simple to install alien so I can use the rpm. Ha! I installed alien and eagerly went to install the rpm-packaged driver from the link above, but alien told me it couldn't deal with rpm using major number less than 3 (or something like that). What I then was trying to install was rpm 4.0.2-18 from the testing; this is what was requiring the unmet dependencies. Would a working copy not requiring bunches of weird stuff be a possibility? Chris Glover wrote: >How about downloading the source for alien and building it yourself??? I tried this just in case, but it still requires you to install rpm - so same problem. Hi list This is what i hate most. I want to install a driver that i can only find in rpm (I'm using debian) I installed alien I can't install the driver as it requires a later version of rpm I can only find a deb version of the later rpm in testing so download the deb package I need about a billion dependent packages, so download I try to dpkg -i them all I get stuck on installing libdb3 as it conflicts with libdb2 I can't remove libdb2 because loads of stuff depends on it. grrrrrrr, Perhaps there is a one-line two-word command someone can help me with that will cure my woes? I'm sure i'm doing this the hard way. Thanks, Jenny.

The name of his website MobiliX.org is supposed to be mistaken for Obelix. The trademark Obelix was registered by the German lawyer Guenter Freiherr v. Gravenreuth. The legal charge is up to 250.000 USD or six months prison. The costs of the first instance are app. 15.000 USD. Werner Heuser has decided not to withdraw the name "MobiliX". He is supported by the German lawyers Jaschinski, Biere und Brexl - JBB (http://www.jbb-berlin.de) This case is another one in the recent series of trademark troubles for Free Software projects (SAMBA, Kylix, Kilustrator, SELFHTML, SuSE, ..). Therefore this case seems to be very important not only because many of these projects have names ending on "iX". The MobiliX.org (http://mobilix.org) site is dedicated to Mobile UniX systems. Therefore its name is a combination of the word "mobile" and the suffix "iX". It leads you to a lot of useful hands-on information about installing and running Linux, BSD, Solaris and other UniXes on laptops, PDAs, cell phones and other mobile computer devices. Linux/Modem problem
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 13 Jan '02

13 Jan '02

My neighbour is running Windows 98 and wants to have a play with Linux. I have set up Debian (Progeny version) on his machine but cannot get the modem to work. He has an external US Robotics 5630 (56k) which works perfectly with windows. After running pppconfig to set up a connection and using pon to dial out I can see the ATZ sent with an OK response from the modem then I see the dial string and immediately the modem returns NO CARRIER. There is a very short burst of noise from the modem before the NO CARRIER message but it won't dial. After this even the initialisation string has no effect until the power to the modem has been turned off and on again. I have never had modem problems with Linux before and I'm stumped. Going back into Windows (now wash your hands), after trying to dial out through Linux, the damn thing works perfectly. Some advice would be heavily appreciated. Barry Samuels

ALUG: RedHat 7.2 Updates Anyone?
by James 12 Jan '02

12 Jan '02

Invitation cordially repeated to the good folks at ALUG If you'd like a RedHat 7.2 Update CD compilation, and can't make CB2 this Sunday or thereafter, I can post or even deliver in person at the Chevely ALUG 27th meet maybe. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: clug RedHat 7.2 Updates Anyone? Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 13:31:40 +0000 From: James <jtl1listmail(a)bigfoot.com> Organization: James - (jtl1-BF) To: clug(a)ebi.ac.uk Folks Work in progress, hopefully ready before CB2 tomorrow... I'm hoping to build at least one "Update" CD of the entire collection of Updates from a number of mirror and "value added" sites later today: For RH7.2 in addition to the RH 6.2 custom variant (Eridani) that I usually work with. With luck, I'll also have a gash RH7.2 running to test all the rpms on the CD, later this evening. Anyone want a copy - for pick-up at CB2 CLUG tomorrow? Same basis as when Tom provided CDs: Cover a CD cost, or bring a replacement 1st quality 700M 80min blank CDR with you... Eventually, I intend to rebuild the Install CD to use the update rpm packages rather than the RedHat October 2001 CD packages. For some reason, OpenSSH has lagged behind the times, but stunnel is recent enough. I will include the v3 OpenSSH rpms, but please bear in mind that these are not "official" RedHat. A considerable number of bug fixes went into 3.0.2p1-1, and I won't have an opportunity to check rpm upgrades before Sunday. The "official" 2.9p2-12 Redhat updates are also there, of course. I don't know what has been back-ported by RedHat into their 2.9 portable OpenSSH rpms. May be able to squeeze the latest KOffice and KDE rpms on an 80min 700M CDR, but no promises. I'll see how much time I have, and how much spare space on the CD is available after the RedHat update directories fill up. My interest in RH7.2 is purely a stepping stone to the fifth generation selinux LSM secure operating system project. Anoyone interested in obtaining a Redhat updates CDR - email me so I know how many to burn before I leave early on Sunday morning. If I run into any snags I'll email to the list again. --James

[...] Did you answer "yes" to the bit where it asks you if you want to install the rest of the system over a modem? ;-) Sadly, you need the base system somewhere local in 2.2, but that's probably healthy anyway, so you don't end up with a half-installed base system. > Downloading and compiling at work at the mo, but is there a > *better* way??? Probably. I used my /home partition (which lives forever) for the base files, along with a couple of floppy disks and it went on fine here, but I've the positively bland "small ext2 root, large ext3 home, medium ext3 usr and var" configuration. I'm not that adventurous with my data ;-) -- MJR

> Your options: > - Idly support this move (most people) > - Pledge to help maintain the wiki when it's online > - Mutiny (feel free) The wiki is now online, but I don't want to put the address anywhere public at all until we have populated it with some more things and some of the problems I have with it have been resolved. If anyone who wishes to help doesn't know where it is, please ask me in private. The "cvs commits" list will become "The Daily Diff" of the web site, showing us what has changed, so even if we allow someone malicious to trash the web site, we should be able to put it back very easily indeed. -- MJR

Work Experience plz help
by Dryden 10 Jan '02

I need help with finding a work experience placement. If any of you could help arrange one or just send me some contact info of possible places. It has to be an IT job and can be anything... programming, web design, network maintenance. As long as its not making people tae or coffee and it involves a computer its good. May be if your making a system that makes tea or coffee and its computer controlled it would be ok ;). oh I'm a BTEC National diploma year 2 student also doing a Cisco CCNA. Its kind of short notice as you can see from below but my last organisation turned round to me and said their department was too full to accommodate me. Which is fine to have left me with out a placement and not much time to find one. Start date: Monday 28 January End date: Thursday 8 February Oh and Kings Lynn, Swafham, Dereham and Norwich kinda way would be good. I cant drive but busses are very helpful(and slow) . Sorry if this seems off topic but I'm running out of places to try with this being so short notice. Would it be more on topic if i asked that it would be good to work with Linux systems. Thanx for your help(i hope!) Syd: > Serious forward planning happening here... At last! ;-) > If we are having the March meeting at Newton Flotman, which I look > forward to, I would prefer it not to be the 24th because that is > school holidays. Can we pencil in sunday March 17th instead? Your venue, so you choose the date, I think. Of course, people may grumble about the date being unsuitable, but you can't please all the people all the time, so only accommodate them if you want to. -- MJR
