Gateway problems
by bsamuels＠beenthere-donethat.org.uk 30 Dec '01

I have a machine running Debian 2.2 which can be connected to the internet via a modem. This is part of a small network. One of the other machines on the network can use the above machine as a gateway and connect successfully to web sites using a browser when running Linux. If the same (secondary) machine is running Windows 95 it cannot connect to any web sites via the Linux gateway machine although the gateway address is set correctly in the network configuration on the secondary machine. Can anyone please offer any pointers? Barry Samuels

Debian: Configuring Gnome
by Chris Lale 29 Dec '01

29 Dec '01

Hello! I have installed Gnome from the official release CDROMs but I cannot get the standard desktop with The "foot" icon, bottom bar, panels etc. I get a custom "debian" background, and menus that appear when I right-click the desktop. There is a workspace icon in the top right-hand corner. Also I cannot change the window manager via Gnome control center, or find a way of adding items to the menus. I do not know whether the problem is in the window manager or the Gnome configuration. Does anyone know how I can install a clean "standard" version of Gnome? Regards Chris Lale

Sounds like you don't actually have gnome running, but only a window manager. Don't know much about debian's layout, but if its anything like slackware then you might need to change the link in /etc/X11/xinit/xinit which is prolly just pointing to a window manager config file. Relink it to gnome, start X, use gnome to load the window manager in gnome config. Thanks for the help on setting up the home mail. I had a reply to Ricardo on setting up a DNS server (to do it the hard way) along the lines of nettle whips and sack-cloth, but I've been getting in a slight muddle with elm, and swapping alug addresses, so it got lost along the way somewhere. Jen.

knews and utf-8
by MJ Ray 20 Dec '01

20 Dec '01

Hi, I'm having problems getting knews to display utf-8-encoded posts properly. It will do utf-7 and latin-3 with no problem, but does anyone know the magic incantations for utf-8? Failing that, I guess I'll build libslang-utf8 and slrn-utf8 or whatever they're called. Or maybe I'll get fed up enough to upgrade to testing. -- MJR

mail config
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 20 Dec '01

20 Dec '01

Hello list. I've got fetchmail and exim working now on my linuxbox, but am having problems getting the two windows machines on my home network set up correctly. I want to tell the windows machine Ducati that Rebecca uses to get its mail from my box Bascule. Bascule knows that Rebecca is 'Rebecca(a)Ducati.jenbass'. Outlook Express on Ducati, however, is asking for mail servers information when I try and set it up, and will only accept a POP3-style input, rather than 'Bascule.jenbass'. Is there a more simple method of configuring a windows machine to collect and send mail on a home network? Thanks, Jenny.

I was lazy too, and was comparing Netscape 4.77 to "Mozilla 5". Mozilla won, of course. But this thread prompted me to upgrade to Netscape 6. What a *very* sensible thing to do!!!! I'm lucky in that hardware isn't a problem for me, but I must say that Netscape 6 is (so far) utterly robust, a doddle to expand (i.e. plugins), and the caching is the best I've seen. Netscape 6 gets my thumbs up. Bigtime. :) (And the Linux version seems much quicker than the windows version! Ha!) Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Highspeed access for everyone...
by Simon 18 Dec '01

18 Dec '01

Well most of you guys will probably already have heard about this, but since I haven't seen any posts I thought I'd be first to get flamed/thanked... http://www.btopenworld.com/satellite/index.html BT are going to be rolling out a satellite solution 500k down 150k upstream, and (obviously) it's not area dependant.. Bit pricy though £140 +vat per month!! still it's a start, us who live in the outback can get a decent net connection before too long... Just been to the BT account manager for our company and he said that if a good case can be put forward it's easily possible to get it before the official roll-out date in April 2002.. UK LUG Distribution specific mailing lists

Some members of this list may not be aware of the existance of distribution specific mailing lists, listed as, `Support Mailing Lists', on this web site: http://www.lug.org.uk/ I would not like to be thought to be suggesting these as an alternative to ALUG. I am however suggesting that they may offer an extra level of support/interest to the members of the ALUG list. John Seago

Edenyard: > I did install the Mozilla that came with same, but that > seemed to take forever to load up and about the same time to actually do > anything. Yes, Mozilla has only recently started to get fast enough for decent use. I'm not sure how it'll fare on a P166, but like Netscape 4 before it, memory is the real limit. You can dress Mozilla up in a light front-end such as Skipstone, which is something you couldn't do with NN4. You might like to take a look at "dillo", which is a very fast browser that will display pages, although it's still a long way from supporting enough to render them all correctly. It also misses JavaScript, cookies, etc, so you'll need another browser on-hand for some sites. Another option is to add an offline browsing cache, such as wwwoffle, to your current setup. That has its own quirks, but it's quite useful. -- MJR

I wrote the line suggested by Mark into my /etc/fstab file, and made a new directory `floppy' in both the root and user home directories, but on trying to mount the floppy I received the message `mount, mount point /floppy does not exist'. The failure of the other entries I made were usually due to the same failure.
