knews and utf-8

Hi, I'm having problems getting knews to display utf-8-encoded posts properly. It will do utf-7 and latin-3 with no problem, but does anyone know the magic incantations for utf-8? Failing that, I guess I'll build libslang-utf8 and slrn-utf8 or whatever they're called. Or maybe I'll get fed up enough to upgrade to testing. -- MJR

mail config

Hello list. I've got fetchmail and exim working now on my linuxbox, but am having problems getting the two windows machines on my home network set up correctly. I want to tell the windows machine Ducati that Rebecca uses to get its mail from my box Bascule. Bascule knows that Rebecca is 'Rebecca(a)Ducati.jenbass'. Outlook Express on Ducati, however, is asking for mail servers information when I try and set it up, and will only accept a POP3-style input, rather than 'Bascule.jenbass'. Is there a more simple method of configuring a windows machine to collect and send mail on a home network? Thanks, Jenny.

I was lazy too, and was comparing Netscape 4.77 to "Mozilla 5". Mozilla won, of course. But this thread prompted me to upgrade to Netscape 6. What a *very* sensible thing to do!!!! I'm lucky in that hardware isn't a problem for me, but I must say that Netscape 6 is (so far) utterly robust, a doddle to expand (i.e. plugins), and the caching is the best I've seen. Highspeed access for everyone...

Well most of you guys will probably already have heard about this, but since I haven't seen any posts I thought I'd be first to get flamed/thanked... http://www.btopenworld.com/satellite/index.html BT are going to be rolling out a satellite solution 500k down 150k upstream, and (obviously) it's not area dependant.. Bit pricy though £140 +vat per month!! still it's a start, us who live in the outback can get a decent net connection before too long... Just been to the BT account manager for our company and he said that if a good case can be put forward it's easily possible to get it before the official roll-out date in April 2002.. I agree, the version of Netscape (6.2 I think) I downloaded on Sunday loads up faster, and parses web pages faster than Netscape 4.77. Yes, Mozilla has only recently started to get fast enough for decent use. I'm not sure how it'll fare on a P166, but like Netscape 4 before it, memory is the real limit. You can dress Mozilla up in a light front-end such as Skipstone, which is something you couldn't do with NN4. You might like to take a look at "dillo", which is a very fast browser that will display pages, although it's still a long way from supporting enough to render them all correctly. It also misses JavaScript, cookies, etc, so you'll need another browser on-hand for some sites. Another option is to add an offline browsing cache, such as wwwoffle, to your current setup. That has its own quirks, but it's quite useful. -- MJR

I wrote the line suggested by Mark into my /etc/fstab file, and made a new directory `floppy' in both the root and user home directories, but on trying to mount the floppy I received the message `mount, mount point /floppy does not exist'. The failure of the other entries I made were usually due to the same failure. There must be something blindingly obvious I've missed somewhere, if someone feels able to point me in the right direction I'd be extremely grateful. Please excuse my gross ignorance. John seago

If the directory 'floppy' is in your home directory, don't you want to be doing mount /dev/fd0 /home/john/floppy ? That appends the contents of your floppy into the directory 'floppy' Jen. Apologies, Double Post

Imust apologise for double posting the same question to the list. I assumed as the first one did not appear in the next list, or the following one that it had not arrived, therefore I posted an ammended version on Sunday. I have found various suggestions for an /etc/fstab entry that will enable me to access, read and write to and from the floppy in various places on newsgroups and Slackware related sites, however none of them seem to actually work, (they probably do, I expect it's mainly incompetence on my part). I think I usually run autofs to access the floppy, but this particular machine has avfs making floppies appear at /#a... I don't really recommend avfs for the masses yet. -- MJR

Mounting Devices as a user in Slackware (KDE)

On Friday I wrote this into my /etc/fstab file: /dev/cdrom /home/john/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0 It worked nicely, emboldened by this success, and with my over confidence fueled by prescription pain-killers, I extrapolated this from the above: /dev/fd0 /home/john/fd0 ext2 noauto,user,ro 1 1 (this latter 1 1 as access was denied otherwise), this succeeded in damaging the filesystem beyond what I could do to repair it. Is there an /etc/fstab entry which will enable me to access both the cd and the floppy as a user in KDE? Is this a question I need to ask on a specialist Slackware list?
