Yes, there's iptables for 2.4.x (sure you can't upgrade from .10 yet?) and there should be guides to using it in pretty much the same places that tell you how to use ipchains for 2.2.x, I think. -- MJR

If you add "rtl8139" to the end of the "/etc/modules" file it should load the module everytime the machine boots. Then rest of the boot scripts will startup ifconfig and route before samba does. (Assuming you have all the correct entries in /etc/network/interfaces file for eth0). D.

box crash question

Hi all, When I came in yesterday morning my box had done some form of crash. Couldn't telnet in, keyboard wouldn't respond, nothing. After nasty reboot and messy things I checked all the log files but could find nothing unusual, last /var/log/messages showed a check at 8.15 am then nothing. The box has a ups connected to give it back-up power so can't have been due to a power blip. Two questions: 1. why would this happen? (answer 42 or fish?) 2. I have to re-enter all the network card stuff manually insmod rtl8139 route add network stuff restart samba daemons etc etc each time the box restarts...a).why doesn't the rtl8139 module get discovered automatically (it is in etc/modutils) and b)can I add all this stuff to a startup script in debian? (Three questions cleverly disguised as two) Thanks, Jenny.

Choose NEVER, I think the default is "Automatically". Why it doesn't just display the old page, I don't know. (So this might not be the answer, or maybe a bug) I've noticed that the cache seems to make less of a difference than in IE 5 on a M$ machine, at least in it's default configuration. redirecting into a command...

Helppp.. Hi Guys, I'm trying to update a router config from a file remotely using rsh.. I know I get a connection as rsh -l<login-name> <router-ip> sh ver works.. But I want to update a few lines for the config, can someone give me a few pointers on how to either redirect or parse or whatever I need to do to get the data out of the file and into the router using rsh (preferably). Your best bet is to search mailing lists and/or newsgroups on google and see what people like the kernel developers have said about the error. You'll probably have more luck searching on the interesting parts of the message like "Bad EIP" than "Null pointer..." which is quite a common error. Hope that helps. -- MJR

Laptop error message

Hi folks, I am a newbie user and have recently installed Linux on my laptop (IBM Thinkpad 560E). (Is this the first sign of Linux addiction??). duel displays???

Can i just use two gfx cards connected up to different monitors... or do i need a duel head card like some of the matrox ones. Netscape 4.77 cache question

Am I the only one for whom the Netscape V4.77 (Linux) cache doesn't seem to work? I have disk cache set to 20Mb, RAM cache set to whatever it came with, and the correct subdirectory in the home directory but it doesn't work as expected. I assume that, when I visit a site, the page that I look at is stored in the cache. When I click on the entry in the hotlist sometime later after having hung up the modem line, I should get the page back because it's been found in the cache. But it doesn't. I just get the error box with the unreachable host message. Maybe I've completely mis-understood how it's meant to work. But this is the way my little old DOS graphical browser works. Thanks for any ideas! Gerald.

Looked at Wiki-wiki. Looks like complete anarchy. I like it. ;-) Could the same be done with php? Would it require too much setting up? Could we use some kind of php Nuke/postnuke solution? (I might be missing something here) Are these valid alternatives? It really depends on what we want out of it, surely? It doesn't seem to clear to me what we actually want from the site. We *should* consider some restriction IMHO, as there are plenty more scriptkiddies and other destructive vermin than there are responsible people... Linux & the job market

I just had an interview with a recruitment agency up North, and we went over my technical skills. One thing that I found interesting was that although I have 2 years M$ experience, they talked almost exclusively about my involvement with Linux (which I casually mention on my CV in 'personal interests'). Unfortunately, with the economy taking such a nosedive, there were no jobs to offer me, but still, it's an encouraging thought. Seems there are a lot of ISP's in that area, and they want people with Linux/Unix/Solaris experience/knowledge.
