Swap space
by John Seago 29 Nov '01

29 Nov '01

I would like to thank every body who has sent me advice on this matter, I have decided to go with x2 > x4 swap space, (space being of no consequence as I have a total disk space of more than 50 gig). As predicted, this seems to have sparked a technical discussion which I don't understand, I'm glad I didn't ask to have it explained to me! Once again thank you everyone for your advice. John seago

> Not with 2.4.* kernels the vm needs either at least 2x swap to RAM or no > swap at all, if not you may/will see performance problems on your machines. Hmm... methinks not. I have 512MB RAM (& kernel 2.4.3), and only 133 MB swap space (to use during the install), and find no performance problem in any way. In fact the opposite! There is simply no reason for me to use 1GB of swapspace! Besides which RAM is *much* faster than swap, easier to upgrade, and just stupidly cheap. I only spent £40 on 512MB (that's probably expensive now), & don't expect to upgrade anytime soon....... I have noticed one thing, though: about 2 mins after my box boots up and I'm into my WM (WindowMaker at the mo'), it pages (oops I mean writes-to-disk/swap?) like crazy for about 5 seconds, then NEVER does it again (until I reboot for whatever reason). This is different to Windoze 2K server on the same machine, for example, which pages like crazy just for the hell of it, inefficient little beasty that it is! Hi, I'm hoping someone can help lift the mist from my eyes... doing an snmpwalk of my PC on .1.3.6.1.4.1.2010.10.1.3 gives me 3 results (as expected), these are the load averages of 1, 5 and 15 mins.. Can someone tell me what might be a high value ? My 1 min load average is 3.66 most of the time.... 3.66 out of what? 100, is this a percentage? Any ideas anyone... Simon

Laurie, this email was more of a grey area than previous messages, not being a "we've got this job" but a "where should we advertise". Of course, you could still count it as sneaky advertising, as most of the email is occupied by their contact details in a non-signature footer, but it can't really be classed as "spam"/UCE. However, what we saw was you stomping in there with the big boots on and threatening them on-list for what appeared an innocent message. No explanation of why you classed it as spam was given. Please, everyone, if you suspect something of being spam, please contact the three of us at main-admin(a)lists.alug.org.uk and *we'll* get the big boots on. If you dislike our decision, *then* you can post to the list bitching about our decision and we'll back down if your opinion is the majority one. I'm inclined to accept job adverts etc into announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk, mainly through the absence of any other material. Ermmm, looks like I will need someone to do the FAQ update for me as I don't have CVS checkout capabilities, as I still don't have a permanent home address or net connection and I can only use a http proxy to get to the outside world at the moment (hence snotmail, and unfortunatly I also need a .net login for M$ support now so at times like this....)anyhow I hope to sort out a permanent place to live soon and will soon have a linux NAT firewall in place at work so should be able to "do" internet things soon, unless I find somewhere else to get proper net access from in the next couple of days. AJS proposed: > Either way. Job postings to ALUG lists: good. Massive commercial blurb in > said postings: bad. This thread: should be dead ;-) I propose: 1. All adverts should go to announce(a)lists.alug.org.uk, subject to some submission criteria: - plain text only - signature <4 lines - strongly encouraged to put supporting material at a URL - max one per batch 2. No adverts are permitted on main@, as they'll get the announce batches anyway. No adverts on social@, as at present. 3. Complaints about ads to <listname>-admin@ in the first instance. I'm sure Martyn has suitably big boots if required. If there are no objections in a day or two, can the FAQ be updated (Adam, do you need me to do the actual CVS changes... email me if so) and I'll implement the changed policy, updating various messages to reflect it. -- MJR

It seems as though my messages aren't getting through so I'll try again. In defence of the comments about Best. Yes we are members of ATSCO (as are agencies that total about 45% of the total UK marketplace) but we don't support IR35 in any way. In fact we are one of only a handful of companies that are able to provide a project based contract that as far it can be is "IR35 proof". It amazes me that the government seem to have managed to get contractors and agents fighting each other when we should be working together. I also checked newspapers and registered with a few agencys directly. It seems rather interesting then that agencys are not having much success with the websites along with the candidates though... I don't have a problem with that and, personally, I'd be quite interested to know how people are getting jobs right now. Are recruitment agencies still worthwhile? However, what I do have a problem with is that *huge* signature which breaks all known conventions, obeys no known standards and has no legal effect whatsoever. Gavin, if you post again, please do it without the sig. -- MJR Anglian LUG http://www.alug.org.uk/ No ePatents http://petition.eurolinux.org/ FSF Europe http://www.fsfeurope.org/

Move over windows once and for all ??
by Earl Brannigan 28 Nov '01

Hi all, Sorry if this is probably best posted on the social list. Linux on the desktop as a serious contender to M$ is now a reality - IMHO. What has been holding Linux back on the desktop is the learning curve required to install and get it up and running - which is often seen as a major problem to the newbie, together with the availability of the necessary hardware drivers. Well - after nagging a friend of mine for months (a retired headmaster) who was always having problems with his win98 setup - he finally agreed to have a dual boot machine with Linux on to 'try it out'. So we ordered Red Hat 7.2 from cheep linux (first point scored - price : £9.99!!) And off we went to install it onto his second (spare) hard drive. The installer auto-detected everything (Soundblaster 128 PCI Soundcard, Diamond Stealth graphics, even the Hansol Monitor). Within 1/2 an hour we had a beautiful looking 1024/768 GNome/KDE/FVWM/Enlightenment Desktop (second point scored : choices-choices), playing midi files through Timidity, ripping CDs to MP3 with GRIP, KOffice etc etc. He was gobsmacked!! Grub is an excellent bootloader, the highlighted list of installed OSes makes even the simple LILO prompt idiot-proof. The only problem (albeit predictable) was that the PCI Modem (a motorola something or other) wasn't detected. Haven't looked into this one yet but it may be a winmodem or there may be a driver for it. Of course the old caveat still applies - and will for some time - use an external modem or one which you know works under linux. The best moment of the entire evening however was that after rebooting to Windows, (He had to see that Windows hadn't been broken) his first comment was how naff the Win98 desktop actually looked!!(Game Set and Match : Linux LOOKS BETTER). Having spent months getting into the nuts and bolts of Debian (which is excellent - though not for the newbie - yet) and some 4 years as a linux user generally, I have to say that with this release RedHat is so difficult to beat. After half an hour we had a system up and running that I am still miles away from with my Debian installation after months of messing. In fact I'm going to dual boot to RedHat 7.2 myself now. I would recommend to anyone out there considering giving Linux a go, spend the tenner at cheep linux or get someone to burn you a copy - or even support Red Hat and buy the boxed version, you too should be gobsmacked!! > Hi Ricardo, > Excellent post. That's good, after I sent it I thought "Oh sh*t I hope I don't start a flame war!". It's coming from the perspective from someone who (occasionally, very very occasionally) works on his linux setup rather than go to the pub.Well, I did once, anyway. ;-) I also spent some time unemployed which is when I first started using Redhat 6.1 - which was suggested to me by my friend who is housebound (and now actually bedridden) due to lung disease. We both had the time and the inclination, but we had both been "Windoze power users" -an oxymoron perhaps! I was talking to Mark Ray about this ease-of-use issue on Sunday (after an installation of X failed on my debian HD)- there's a real problem with hardware vendors not releasing driver details- it really holds up the install and applications as well. There are plenty of talented programmers who would write drivers, if hardware vendors would only release the specs. I have the outmost respect for the dedication and skill of Linux developers. It's not mean task! Hopefully- somehow- we'll get there. (And hopefully installing and upgrading WILL be a simply, quick task for all Linux users). :) Ricardo -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

How to find people with Linux skills
by Gavin Smith 27 Nov '01

I hope someone in your group will be able to help me. I need to recruit software engineers with Linux skills for a client in East Anglia. I've tried all the more obvious solutions, jobserve, jobsite etc. Where would you go to look for a new job (any suggestions greatfully received).
