> > Come to think of it, perhaps I'll leave the Debian install till the > > meeting, it seems there are a fair few Debian fans around here :^) Well, _I_ was thinking of that too! So perhaps we can get an install going in tandem (I have 2.2r3 discs). But that means I'm gonna have to buy a new HD... ££££! I use Mandrake 8.0 on my desktop (Duron), and Redhat 6.1 on my laptop (AMD 486-yay!), although I don't really use my laptop for anything at the moment! If people are willing to help with a Debian install (rather than just laugh at me, you're allowed to do it *as well*, just not on it's own-that's *my* job!), then I'll lug (pardon the pun) my desktop to the meeting. Mozilla plug-ins

I've been able to activate my Java VM plug-in in Netscape, but can't seem to do this in Mozilla. I've checked www.mozilla.org, but it doesn't seem to have the info. Do I have to set an environment variabel like in Netscape? Does anyone know what it is? I prefer Mozilla, for some reason!! -- Get your free email from www.linuxmail.org Powered by Outblaze

Burning Linux CDs under Windoze
by Paul 20 Nov '01

Hi Folks I have received a question on burning bootable CDs under Windows. This is something I have never done...... Can anyone help with an answer. > I have downloaded the BDI image but have no cd burner, so a friend is > going to make a disk for me. > I just released there is an ALUG meeting planned for next weekend at UEA. > Is this still going ahead? Who's planning to attend? I'll be there, but what are we doing? I think the room in question has a number of small tables, so we can probably have some small talks on particular topics as well as the normal "kit rush". People who are interested in the talks can just sit down while the rest of them use kit on one edge of the room. Sounds OK? Owen, are you doing a talk? I'd quite like to talk to some people about the plans for Free Software in this country. What time shall we aim to start the talks at? 1430? I'm travelling from King's Lynn, as always, and probably setting off just after noon. If anyone reasonably near the main routes wants transport to/from, please email me privately. UPS - confused

Hi All, Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between using apcd and powerd? I'm trying to set up a smart UPS 700 . Seems that you have to run them in dumb mode, so I guess I can only get the box to shut down rather than reboot? Jenny.

Owen: > can't get it to work properly) I hate debian's way of building kernels, why > not the same as everyone else? I think you'll find other distributions do different things if you want to build it as a package. Some are more painful. Debian's is OK once you've done it a few times and you keep your revisions and flavours apart. > and is fakeroot a security hole ?? Hard to see how it could be, as it's designed to fool the system into thinking it's root when it's not, rather than the other way round. No elevated privleges required. -- MJR

Dave Crease - Biographical notes!
by David Crease 19 Nov '01

19 Nov '01

I have no serious or professional use for Linux, I just like the idea of a free operating system and software that is in the hands of the users. As this may indicate I am an old hippy who graduated in Chemistry in the 1960s, taught at various levels for many years and at the age of 59 have ended up as the Brewing Manager at Woodforde's Brewery. I've been using computers since the 1960's starting with a Stantec Zebra but my knowledge of them is very fragmented. I have Redhat7 on a AMD Athlon, tucked away in a partition so that my wife can use the Windows stuff. I have no special interests in using Linux. I am just intrigued by the whole thing. When and where is the next meeting, please? Dave Crease

Okay, Here goes. I use Debian 2.2r4 (from linux123.co.uk, don't think i'll use them again, my 2.2r2 cheeplinux.com CDs are much prettier) on both my desktop and laptop computers. I've upgraded both to a 2.4.X kernel to provide better support for things like CD writers and USB. The desktop is a custom built AMD K6 2-400 w/128mb RAM and the rest. The laptop is a Toshiba Satelite 4070CDT. Very proud of getting all the hardware in my laptop working, including the Lucent winmodem and USB ports! lilo startup crash(mandrake 8.0)
by Dryden 19 Nov '01

19 Nov '01

Finally i have a nice working email service that i can use in collage(as you can tell from my email addy ;-). I have messed about with the config file for lilo (/etc/lilo.conf). this was so that i could added my new kernel as the default for startup but now my Linux box just freeze after the time to select an option is up. It will boot up fine if i stop the countdown and select my option. Any one know what is wrong with this? It seems to mount my hard disk drives in its freeze time as it checks my hard drives(with fsck) when i next boot it properly. If you need to see my config file ill put it on my site and post a link to it, just mail me back and ask. re how do I
by tom potts 19 Nov '01

19 Nov '01

If you want to avoid the browser wrapping text in html the easiest way if to use the <pre> ...</pre> tags which displays any text in between "as is" - is short fro preformatted. If you are 'parsing' in log files to an html file then write "<pre>" to the output file and then copy the (I presume txt file) straight in (you might want to check for the </pre> tag and htmlise that just in case) and then slap the "</pre>" tag after it. Apache mod_perl - Does it have the perl interpreter build into mod_perl or does it load it from elsewhere
by Steve Fosdick 18 Nov '01

18 Nov '01

I have tried reading some of the mod_perl docs but didn't find the answer to this one... With a web server with mod_perl available, is the perl interpreter itself embedded in the mod_perl.so module, or does mod_perl.so load the perl interpreter from some external source, e.g. a libperl.so that is part of the systems normally perl installation. I am interested primarily to know if upgrading the perl version on a system using mod_perl will: a) cause the newer perl intrepreter to usedby Apache. b) break mod_perl by having perl modules that assume a recent version of the perl interpreter but actually get run under an older one in mod_perl. Does anyone know please? Steve.

Gmix and Sound Card Identification
by Steve Fosdick 18 Nov '01

18 Nov '01

Hi, Does anyone please knoe gmix (the Gnome mixer) determines the type of sound card installed and which controls it has? Gmix used to be identify my card correctly as an ES1371 and offer me a record level control, but not gmix thinks it is a Tritech??? and offers no such control. In the absense of the control the record level seems to be set permanently to zero! Steve.
