I don't know of anything that will scan files downloaded from the web. Me, I think fixing client problems by hacking the server stinks. You'll still only get people running stuff not got through the means covered and they'll be complacent. Linux virus problems are still rare (you only installed GPG-signed packages of software from recognised sources, right?) and most other problems can be taken care of by keeping your system patched up to date. -- MJR

ISTR that some Windowses used a large hidden file at the end of the partition for swap. You'll need to unhide this, but that probably means you should switch of swap during the defrag. Don't ask me how, as I've forgotten that. Instaling linux alongside windows

I have wanted to try out linux for a while however i have been having problems in creating the second partition needed. I only have a 1.5GB hard drive on my 486 (8 years old and still going!!), and windows for some reason of its own has installed a nice big block of data right near the end of the drive. the defrag program that comes with windows 95, refuses to move this data. This means that fips will not allow me to create a large enough partition to install a linux distro. (note i have tried restarting and defraging as well as trying it in safe mode, to no effect.) Does anyone know of a free program that will either allow me to defrag the hard drive properly, or create the partitions nessesary without destroying data (e.g. a free version of something similar to partition magic). Thanks in advance for any help you can give :o)

What's the agenda? the http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/ site always times out on me. Although I got MDK 8.0 up and running, I'd like to install Deb 2.2r3 (I have the disks). Unfortunately, I tried to install 2 times already- both failed for different reasons. It would be great if someone could lend a hand there. I have a 4 port hub I can bring- I really can't get away with taking the other hubs (all 40 ports worth) away from work as they're mucho £££££- specially as they're being installed on the monday. I should be able to bring a crossover cable and some other cat 5 cables, but it would be helpful if people brought their own too. Check out http://www.uk.debian.org/News/2001/20010415 it's an article on what to add to your sources.list to upgrade to a 2.4.X kernel. I've done it on both my laptop and desktop computers and they run fine now (with proper USB support! yea!). I won't include a summary as i recommend you read all the instructions listed there. A small word of warning though, the apt source is unofficial so therefore it is unsupported, but the maintainer is a registered Debian developer so it's all pretty well maintained. Locked Directories-MDK8.0- answer!!!!

ALL credit must go to Syd on this one. You're an absoloute star- there's a pint with your name on it!!!!!!! In a terminal:- su (give password) supermount -i disable umount /mnt/cdrom umount /mnt/floppy mount -a supermount -i enable (optional: it may change your FS type to "auto", so try iso9660 for CD, vfat for floppy) mount -a This did it for me. And of course:- cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.bak ...Just incase it balls up again! :) I suspect that supermount has problems with windows partitions- poss remove from fstab and mount manually if you want to use them? How do you set up a directory so that files being copied into it from a windows machine using a samba share will copy as read only? At the moment they are rwx- - - - - - so I have to chmod manually when a doc is copied in. I've tried to set the whole directory as 755 using the -R option, which works for stuff already there but stuff copied in afterwards is still unreadable. nb - the files are moved in by various mortal users. ALUG Meeting.. problem..

I've just been speaking to the Millennium Centre and they've turned round and told me that there is an issue, they don't have the room for us anymore!!! But I have a cunning plan, we can use the Cinema at my parent place in Cheveley (5 mins down the road), all organised if everyone is ok with that... Bonus, in true Linux tradition, it's free (and there's a sauna and pool available if anyone wants to refresh themselves)... Anyway over to you guys. Simon P.S. Taking the Plunge - recompiling the kernel

Please help!!! Having been persuaded (against my better judgment, no doubt) to have a go at this 'Recompiling the Kernel' game, I finally plucked up enough courage this afternoon. I installed all the source code for kernel 2.4.9, installed all the gcc and things for my Slackware 8.0 system and went for it. Ran make menuconfig first of all and patiently waded through the billions of choices there. Managed to save it and a message came up which said, 'make dep next'. I checked with my Kernel HOW-TO V2.5 and that's what it seemed to be saying, too. So I did. VERY soon after typing 'make dep', I got this: /usr/include/bits/local_lim.h:36: linux/limits.h: No such file or directory make: *** [scripts/mkdep] Error1 Well - I don't have a clue what to do now. I read through the Kernel HOW-TO 'Pitfalls' section and (of course) no mention of this particular one. What's missing? Where is it?? <groan> I knew THIS would happen.... Sone kindly soul - please can you get me out of this latest hole? Thanks! Gerald.

You're now the proud owner of an X4-based system. You may need to make sure that you have the right packages installed (try "aptitude" if you have it installed...
