firewall messages

Hello, Recently, I have upgraded my SuSE firewall and have been noticing these messages (below) in my xconsole. I am on a 56k dial-up offering no services and all ports are closed (except for one which is open to localhost), so I feel pretty secure and all 'on-line applications' I use seem to be working fine, so I am curious as to what this means. I use a 2.4.2 kernel and iptables firewall. Any ideas? The src IP changes sometimes, but often is the same or similar. If you d/l the PHP manual, in 'install.apache.html' there seem to be some quite good instructions. You're trying to make mod_php, then load it using /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. Alternatively, Mandrake 8 comes with PHP precompiled and ready to run (inc. GD and PgSQL support, if/when you want them). Highly recommended, and if someone has been tempting you to Debian with apt-get, I suggest you have a look for rpm-get. It has plenty of rough edges, but I got it working well enough. The 'no acceptable cc path found in $PATH' bit sounds quite dire, to me. CC is short for C compiler, which is usually fulfilled by GCC (GNU CC). Try 'which gcc' and if it comes up blank, use 'find /usr -name gcc' to find it then add appropriate directory to your PATH (IE in /etc/bashrc or .bashrc). If you can't find gcc at all, you're either on a proprietary UNIX (ie AIX) in which case you should 'find' for cc or you need to get it. Of course, it may mean something completely different by 'cc', but I remember being thrown by 'cc' meaning 'gcc' before. If you do get PHP working and need questions answered, do mail me. Well there's a lot of easier ways for those a little nervous of installing things to get PHP up and running..... Although I appreciate that you're talking Debian here I thought I might just throw in my two penneth and let you know that RPM based stuff is most easily customised by visiting http://rpms.arvin.dk/php/ Mr Troels Arvin has built his own set of rpms which (rather than Zend's idea of one big beasty of an rpm) allow you to only include the functionality that you want..... I have finally got around to clearing some leave to go to Linux Expo this year. I don't mind which day at the moment, but I will need to decide tomorrow. I think there was a plan to discuss this on IRC tonight but unfortunately I can't make the IRC chat until quite late so I may miss many of you. Even so I would be glad to hear which day most people are planning on going (or if there is an even split). For people travelling from or near Ipswich there's the train... If it's just me then the train looks like the better option, but if a party of us go in a car together then that may be cheaper. If you are interested in sharing a car from Ipswich or there abouts then drop me a note and let me know if you are intending to drive and are looking for passengers, want to be a passenger and for someone else to drive, or don't care. Can anyone recommend any reasons for or against upgrading GCC from 2.95.2 to GCC 3? Also How easy is it to compile a compiler? I know its convoluted in that you compile it with the old one, then compile the new one with its self then, recompile with that output or something like that. 'lo All. I'm on my least favoured subject - installing stuff. I've installed PHP-4.0.6 and am trying to run ./configure. Two Q's: 1. error: no acceptable cc path found in $PATH Can anyone tell me what I am missing? 2. I want to include support for postgresql, using - -with-pqsql [=DIR] ..................default dir is /usr/local/pgsql but on debian it is - well, I'm not sure what it is actually! could it be /var/lib/postgres or /usr/lib/postgres or even /etc/postgresql? Can anyone tell me, erm, well, which path to include in the option? 3[apology section] Thanks! jen.

They do the hard part of figuring out these options for you. Isn't the version got by "apt-get install php4 php4-pgsql" good enough for you? Oh well. If you want the absolute latest versions, make sure you have something like deb-src ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib deb-src http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main in your /etc/apt/sources.list and then make sure you have all the debian build tools around by doing apt-get install task-debian-devel task-devel-common task-c-dev Now, if you're using unstable as your base system, I believe apt-get build-dep php4-pgsql should work. Otherwise, you can try: apt-get source php4 cd <directory it unpacked to> grep Depend debian/control apt-get install <any bits it needs that you haven't got> debuild binary dpkg -i <package it just made that you want> or some slight variation on the above. -- MJR

What distro are you using though as it does sound a little buggy! I found that I had the same experience (installed apps not working etc.) as you until I found Debian, although Debian was more stressful to install and the prior knowledge of other distros was very helpful.
